STATE FAIR BOARD

There are only a handful of fairs west of the Mississippi that have celebrated 150 years of entertaining guests. Nebraska State Fair is crossing that milestone and in large part because of Nebraskans’ extraordinary perseverance. Arriving to Grand Island in 2010 is likely one of the finest examples of this determination, a feat not unlike moving a small city. But as evidenced by this year’s great floods, it surely will not be the last trial.

Join us as we plan for the generations to come who will enjoy the finest entertainment, educational exploration and family activities while prospering Nebraska agriculture – the cornerstone of our existence. Nebraska State Fair is moving forward for 150 more, and we can’t wait for what’s to come!

Pump & Pantry C-Store sells sundries such as aspirin, bandages, sunscreen, safety pins, water and all sorts of stuff show moms might forget.

Leave your bicycle at the Bike Barn located at the North Gate. Bring your own lock.

Visit a volunteer at any of our info kiosks – presented by Chief Industries – ask them just about anything!

Shade and seating available across grounds – look for canopies and our new Aurora Co-op Chill Zone.

Anyone who fills out a survey is entered into a drawing to win Fairabration Passes for 4 to the 2020 State Fair – look for survey stations on grounds.

Emergency? Call 911 and be able to describe your exact location at Nebraska State Fair. First aid, nursing moms, baby changing and rest station located at the Welcome Center.

Viaero presents five cell phone charging stations at hotspots on the grounds.

Towed vehicles will be available for pick up at the west parking lot by the shop or at Gate 7. Provided by Kramer’s Wrecker Service, they also help with flat tires and vehicle troubles.

Riding vintage 1950s modified tractors, kids try to outpull one another down a 25-foot track. Crowds roar, kids cheer and the world is complete.

Magic BeanState-of-the-art magic brings jaw-dropping amazement for kids. This show is a fun and different way to learn about agriculture, with audience participation mixed in.

UNL celebrates 150 yearsJoin the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the Cornhusker Marching Band, the Nebraska Spirit Squad and the Dairy Store for a festive celebration of its 150th birthday.

From a pep rally featuring Herbie Husker and Lil’ Red, to a Husker history lecture from long-time Husker football writer Mike Babcock, to a special-edition ice cream flavor, there is something for everyone. We’ll also recognize the Nebraska families who own original land-grant property used to establish the University in 1869, and even film a special edition of the Backyard Farmer TV program.

After you fill up on AGtivity Acres, swing into Raising Nebraska, the region’s premier ag education center. You’ll find a full schedule available at the door, but expect demonstrations and workshops, attend the theater, drive a combine in a simulator, enter the mini house, and “walk across Nebraska” which isn’t flat at all.

Raising Nebraska is also a Passport Stop by Nebraska Tourism, so get stamped!

Presented by Nebraska Soybean BoardCROP OF THE YEAR – SOYBEANSThe Miracle CropSoybeans, a legume like peas, are nicknamed the “miracle crop” for all the great health benefits for people and animals too. Nebraska soybean farmers raise about 5.7 million acres of soybeans producing about 61 bushels per acre. A bushel is similar to a large garbage sack. What’s astonishing is that Nebraska farmers grow enough soybeans to bring $1.5 billion to Nebraska’s economy in soybean sales. Soybeans are the second-largest row crop in Nebraska, right behind corn.

SOYBEAN USEMost of the soybeans are used for livestock feed (chickens and pigs are happy customers) and oil for biodiesel. Today’s on-road diesel trucks use about 2.8 billion gallons of biodiesel with a goal to reach 10% of the diesel consumption market by 2022.

Cattle ShowsAT THE NEBRASKA FARM BUREAU SHOW RING IN FIVE POINTS BANK ARENAHow do you recognize the difference between dairy cows and beef cows? Hint, dairy cows might look like a paint brush went crazy on their hides, beef cattle are ripped for your favorite T-bone steak! And news flash kids…brown cows do not make chocolate milk. So please pass me the steak, and if you’re a true cattleman, you’ll hold the ketchup.

sheep ShowsSheep BarnSheep ranchers raise these wooly buggers for two reasons: some breeds are for their quality wool to make warm clothing, other breeds are raised for nutrient-rich meat like lamb chops. Look for sheep getting haircuts (shearing) Monday through Friday.

CATTLE DOG TRIALSAT THE NEBRASKA FARM BUREAU SHOW RING IN FIVE POINTS BANK ARENAThere is a relationship between a man/woman and their dog. A rancher used to try to work his cattle either on horseback or walking. Now their dogs help drive the cattle where they want them to go. Watch them work!

Hog Shows aurora CO-OP pavilionA pig is a super smart animal. They root around for tasty vittles, and they love a good mud bath to cool off. Some pigs have big spots, some have hairy chins, and some are pink. You’ll see pigs roaming the show pen looking for, well, vittles. Because that’s what pigs do.

Goat shows aurora CO-OP pavilionJust like cattle, goats come in dairy and meat types. Dairy goat milk is sometimes used as a replacement product for folks who have digestion issues. Boer Goat meat has the fastest growing meat sales in the U.S., and the high demand means a shortage of supply.

Llama/Alpaca Shows AURORA CO-OP PAVILIONWhat is a good mother hen to a sheep? Llamas. They are good at scaring away coyotes and other villains. Llamas are known for their hearty, tough nature helping people pack goods. An Alpaca is the llama’s cousin. Their beautiful “silky dreadlocks” make luxurious sweaters, scarves or blankets – which is lighter and warmer than wool.

Poultry and More SHEEP BARNAll the rest of the barn critters reside here. Check out the chickens, rabbits, cavies and more. 4-H and FFA youth are showing small animals for big titles, and poultry open class competitors vie for the champion bird.

JUDGE A CATTLE SHOW WITH USFIVE POINTS BANK ARENAKids, you can be a judge too! Find any cattle show this week, choose an animal and be the judge. Fill out your name and email below, drop this page at the Pie Stand at the Arena, and we’ll enter you into a drawing for four admissions to the 2020 State Fair!

Here’s how to judge cattle:(Score on a 1-5 scale with 5 being best, 1 being worst; pick any steer or heifer to judge and have fun!)

SOUND STRUCTURE: Just like you, cattle need to be able to walk strong. A healthy cow lives a full life if she has sound feet and legs.

MUSCLING: Check to be sure he has plenty of muscle, as if he has been to the gym! Show cattle have lots of fluffy hair, so you’ll have to study closely and make sure his muscle is ample through his whole body.

DEEP BODY: Cattle who are round ribbed and deep around their middle means more pounds, which means higher quality meat.

A visit with agent Trent Loos, Hazard, NEMore than ever, kids need to be challenged. They need tools to give them self-confidence. When raising animals in 4-H or FFA, kids cannot just take care of them when they want. That responsibility they learn carries over to problem solving, and that base education never leaves them. They take those skills all the way to a career.

Equine ShowsPresented by Equitable BankThe Equine Department has leapt forward in quality events from cutting horse competitions to Appaloosa shows. Here are some highlights you might explore:

WORKING COW HORSE EVENTSThompson foods Indoor and Outdoor ArenasThe Quarter Horse is known for its cat-like skill with cattle, either maneuvering a cow away from her buddies or moving a cow to a different pen. To see this amazing work, check out Cattle Sorting, Team Penning, and specialty cow horse competitions like Reined Cow Horse and Cutting Horse action.

Paint SplashesThompson FOODS Indoor and Outdoor ArenasLewis & Clark journaled in 1805, “…some of these horses are pided with large spots of white irregularly scattered and intermixed with the black brown bey or some other dark colour.” The Appaloosa and Pinto breeds are wildly popular for their splashes of spots from small to large. These horses show Aug. 26 – 27.

Cowboy Mounted ShootersFIVE POINTS BANK ARENA, THOMPSON FOODS OUTDOOR ARENAAt top speed, these athletes race through a pattern of balloon targets – the goal? Shoot as many of them as you can with your black powder pistol, as fast as you can. The crowd packs the stands for this event Aug. 30 – 31.

Carriages, Wagons and TeamsFive Points Bank Arena, Sports FieldHorses weighing more than a ton, to ponies you can carry in the back of your minivan, here is where you find fabulous equines pulling unicorn hitches and six-up teams. The Draft Horse Hitch Show and Pull is held opening weekend. You’ll find the carriage driving show at the Sports Field this year, out on the green, Aug. 31 – Sept. 1.
