Writing In Style
Age hasn't been an obstacle for Zack Thibodeaux, who at only sixteen has combined innovation and determination, to create a growing business by making designer writing pens. A student at Cypress Ranch and a Fairfield resident, Zack made his first pen while in an eighth grade tech class, where he learned the basics of woodworking. It was a simple design, but the beginning of learning how to craft wooden and acrylic pens.
His first pen designs were made on a lathe, not really suited for the fine designs he wished to achieve. A year later, his father, Chad, found the perfect lathe to sculpt the wood and helped him set up shop. For a couple of years, his pen making was just a hobby that he enjoyed. He would make them for friends and family but not as a serious business adventure. It took a new truck, and the need of gas money and insurance, to see his hobby in a new light.
"I told him, he had to get a job", said Chad." He was sixteen and some of the responsibility of his truck needed to be paid by him." That was when Zack decided to sell the pens he had been making. It was hard at first to find the time, between sports, school and church. But when weighting the options between a job at a fast-food-restaurant and time at home making pens - the ball points easily won out. Supported by his family, who helped by opening a small bank account to buy the first supplies, Zack created a web-site to show and sell his pens. As Christmas neared, the craft show at Towne Lake offered a real selling experience for him.
With twenty pens, Zack and his parents put out a table and presented his work. All twenty pens sold and orders for more were taken. He worked all during the Christmas holiday's making
sure all orders were filled. With Christmas behind him, and solid steps taken to assure more orders in the future, Zack is now putting back money from his sells to accompany his church, Community of Faith on a mission trip this summer to Costa Rica." The church helps support a foster home there," Zack said. "I play soccer and I really want to help work with the kids in the home and maybe help teach them how to play soccer."
"Zack has learned valuable lessons in making these pens", said Ashley, his mother. It has taught him to be more disciplined and to finish what he starts. It has also allowed him to save for things he wants to do, like the mission trip. We are really proud of what all he has accomplished in such a short time."
Zachary is an athlete and has played on both the JV and Varsity football teams, the wrestling team and the soccer team. He attends Community of Faith Church in Cypress. Proceeds from the sale of his pens will help fund a mission trip to Costa Rica in the summer.

“Pecan is definately number one, “ said owners David and Melinda Kennedy with confidence when ask which was the top selling flavored coffee at Jitterbugs Cafe on Mason Road. “ We call Pecan the favorite flavor of Fairfield, he continued.
Over the last several years, coffee shops have come and gone around Cypress, but Jitterbugs is one of a few establishments where coffee making is treated like an art, or at least a high form of craft.
For years Fairfield residents had to drive miles away for a quality cup of coffee. Now Jitterbug Cafe offers a huge variety of flavors, lattes, frappes, smoothies, teas and expresso shots right in the subdivision. Beyond the drinks, you can also dine in for during the day. From a breakfast waffle, served with a buttery syrup, powered sugar, or yogurt to a lunch menu which includes their signature Chicken Avocado Wrap.
Jitterbugs has comfy couches for sitting, wifi connections for laptops and plenty of space to sit back and read a book or Kindle while taking a little “Me Time” out of a busy day’s schedule. Bring a friend and indulge in vibrant conversation while warming your hands from the cold weather outside over steamy coffee.
Located conveniently on Mason Rd, near the front of the subdivision, Jitterbugs has made the committment to Fairfield residents to be the coffee cafe that can fill their specialty needs.

HELPING FIDO
There is an urgent need in Cypress to pay attention to the treatment of unwanted dogs. Although many dog owners treat their pups like members of the family and keep them stocked with the best accessories money can buy, other dogs are not so lucky. They are toss out on roads and search for food and a warm place to sleep.
Thankfully, people like Cindy Lowery, Gina Evans, and Jeanne Diarte in Fairfield are rescuing these dogs themselves. They are the Northwest Houston affiliate of Pup Squad, who's mission is to rescue orphaned puppies and nursing litters from streets, shelters and other life-threatening situations and match them with permanent adoptive homes.
"2010 was a banner year for Pup Squad’s Cypress group—far more than any of us ever expected!" said Cindy. "Although geographically separated from the main “hub” of Pup Squad we have worked hard to make a difference in our own corner of Greater Houston."
In the Cypress area we have been fortunate to garner some great fosters homes that help us save mamas and pups from certain illness in shelters or even imminent death. These same fosters have also stepped up to serve as hosts to a variety of dogs lost or dumped in Fairfield and Cypress. Our group may be small but that is not the measure of the size of our hearts—we have exceeded 650 animals fostered and/or adopted in just over a year!
As in any volunteer organization, there are never enough of us to go around, but we don’t let that stop us from achieving our mission—saving as many animals as we can and matching them with permanent adoptive homes. No small feat when financial resources are limited, the need far outweights the number of foster homes, and the shelters that are overflowing. We are always in need of donations and more foster homes. If you are interested in helping please go to our website at www.pupsquad.org. THANK YOU!

Oh by the light of the silvery moon. Remember back to last year and those first warm nights of spring; a clear moon casting shadows; a gentle breeze of rain washed air. OK now admit it, we do have a few of those nights. Why not plan a part of your garden around the night? During a hectic work week that may be the only time you really get to enjoy your garden.
Moon gardens are special gardens designed to be seen at dusk and into the night. Luckily there are plants perfect for work on the night shift. Some plants have
flowers that only open at night to exude their wonderful fragrance and some just look good at night because of their white flowers or silvery leaves. Gardens designed around white flowers and silver-leaved plants are dramatic day and night.. Moon flower, Ipomoea alba, is a show stopper. The large 6 inch wide white flowers start

unfurling about dusk. This relative of the morning glory is a vigorous growing vine and kind of looks like a morning glory on steroids with large flowers and large heart shaped leaves. It is an annual but can be started from seed from the previous season or from garden centers. Angel’s Trumpet, Datura spp. is also called moon flower. Its large upward or outward facing trumpet shaped flowers look very tropical. Depending on the species and cultivar, flowers may be white, pink, lavender, purple or yellow. They love heat and full sun. On warm summer nights the flowers are particularly fragrant. All parts of this plant are poisonous, so no grazing in the garden.
Other night fragrant flowers include night blooming jasmine, flowering tobacco and sweet autumn clematis.

It’s February, cold and breezy, not the typical time to think about swimming. But, before you can say “summer,” the temps will be hovering at a scorching 90 plus degrees in Houston! Time for people to start dreaming of a pool...floating in cool refreshing water in their own backyard.
Before jumping in, though, there are questions to ask and answers to find.
How much do pools cost? What can fit in my yard? What design is best for my house? What materials do I use? How do I choose a pool builder?
“People come to us feeling a little overwhelmed.” Leo Kleiweg, owner of Paragon Pools. “With the right information, guidance and communication, a pool build should be an enjoyable and fun experience.”
When researching pool builders, the word“custom,” just as in homes, means above the normal and one of a kind. The entire process from design to finish is treated as a unique work of art. With this attention, the end result will be of much higher quality and the costs should reflect the difference.
Our buisness is fast moving and constatnly changing. At Paragon Pools, we are expanding our knowledge in design, construction, materials and trends every day. We make sure the clients’ decisions are based on the most current information available.
Every individual has a vision for their outdoor living space. From pools and spas, with kitchens and fire pits, to patios and landscaping, each project is unique. “We use our experience and knowledge to guide theclient throughout the project. We make it as easy as possible for them to see their dream become a reality.” David Pavlesic, owner of Paragon Pools.
“What we are seeing in pools designs, materials and colors has changed over the last few years.” The use of glass in pools and spas creates an elegant and dramatic look. Also, the design of pools have shifted to cleaner, geometric lines.

One of the best ways to add curb appeal to your home is to have an attractive front door. A well kept front door can increase your home’s value by 3 to 6 percent. Exterior doors in our Houston area suffer from a tremendous amount of elemental damage. While the heat might be fine for enjoying the lake, hiking, and swimming pools; sun and heat cook exterior doors like a fried egg on a skillet. Exterior doors’ finish takes most of the damage from direct sun. If your doors were finished correctly, when the home was new, the finish should last for about 3-5 years in direct sun. Most finishing on exterior doors lacks the basic protection unless you had the builder custom coat your door.
After a year or two, you are probably staring at bare wood, and an ugly entryway. It bothers you when you drive up, it bothers you that friends and neighbors see the unsightliness of your entry. You want it fixed. You can try to do this yourself. I recommend you don’t. You should call a pro. I have been in the door business in the Houston area for years and I am a specialist on refinishing front doors. A exterior door specialist has the knowledge about, not only the refinishing requirements, but also wood species that perform well under the weather conditions in this area. Your yard may be the first impression a visitor has of your home, but your front door is the first reflection of you. Make sure your door let’s visitors know that your home is well cared for.

Tiffany Nolan Today’s Real Estate market is one of uniqueness, opportunity and challenges. I am often asked by my clients, “can I sell or should I sell in this market?” The answer I found is not always a simple yes or no. Texas in general is fairing much better than other parts of the country. Although we have not seen the steep double digit decline in home values as in Florida and Nevada, we have seen a backward trend in our overall home valuation. Much of this can be attributed to the surge of short sale and foreclosed properties as well as the surplus home inventory. In simple terms, it’s a true buyer’s market. The simple yes or no I referred to above becomes a bit tricky when talking to my clients advising them of their moving options. I first remind them there will be a great deal of competition when selling their home in today’s market. When there are numerous homes competing for very few buyers, It’s imperative to price your property aggressively and important to make your property show better than all the competition. Then I remind my clients that their options are endless when purchasing a new home all the while obtaining a new loan with great interest rates. For many, the great buying options and all time low interest rates far outweigh that risk and reality of netting less than they would if it were a seller’s market.

Racing to the
Midnight Sun
Fairfield resident Richard Ameen knows what it takes to race 460 miles on Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City. As captain of an eight-man boat, his group of hardy Texans has won this grueling race and placed the Texas seal firmly on the northern landscape. For Richard, his boat racing didn’t just begin with the Yukon River Quest. He was a runner, competing in marathons across the area. But when running began to take a toll on his knees, he began to look at other ways to compete. With strong
athletic determination and a desire to win, racing canoes and kayaks became his new sport. The Texas Water Safari in Texas was his first major racing competition in Texas. This long, tough, nonstop, canoe race traverses 260 miles of challenging rivers and bays from San Marcos to Corpus Christi. Richard won this race in 2004 and then set his sights to other challenging courses. But to compete in the Yukon River Quest, it would take more than determination. It would
take a special boat and a team that could handle all the rough currents and exhausting hours. Richard had been handcrafting his racing boats in his garage but this canoe had to be larger and tougher than a suburban garage could handle. He ask friend, Skip Johnson of Spring, to help design a special boat for the race. From this meeting, the thirty-four foot boat that would hold eight men began to take form.

One special design innovation that was included in this boat were lateral sliding seats in the center four positions. They named the boat Voyageur. In the summer of 2007, Richard and his crew set out for the wild land of the Yukon. With the boat secured to the top of a motor home, they arrived excited and yet knowing that a team from Texas was probably not favored to win. But win the race they did, in a record time of 41 hours 15 minutes. Richard is still racing and winning. “I look at boats and think: I can build a Texas boat and win this race,” said Richard when ask about his boat designs. While it’s the boats that usually take center stage in any race, it really the paddlers skill and tenacity that wins the race. Richard Ameen, leading the Boy’s from the Bayou team, has taken both to the winners spotlight.

Making History since 1911
Rodeo time is just around the corner, time to pull on your boots and find yourself a country chic outfit. This year's rodeo fashion is a showdown between ruffles and rugged, frilly tulle and chunky turquoise. Reaching into Mom's closet for her old 1981 "Urban Cowboy" duds won't cut it today. Todays western fashion, like today's country music features a dash of rock-and-roll and and a little biker influence thrown in for flavor.
Nocona leather belt for the rodeo, cook-offs, and definitely for the cowgirl fashionista!
Fashion and relibility go together with Cruel Jeans. Stylish and rugged, these jeans feature a zipper fly with a top botton, low-rise waist with a dark stonewash with whiskers.
Check out the new shirts made by Cruel Girl.

To see Schiel Road now, with barricades making it hard to maneuver as it merges into Muschke, it hard to believe that just a few years ago it was the quick shortcut from the back of Fairfield to zip over toward bustling Spring Cypress. Go west on Schiel and a school now sits where cattle once roamed. It sometimes makes you wonder what the old settlers of Cypress would think if they could see all the changes that have happened along and to this little country road. When Jacob Schiel, his wife and five sons first settled 900 acres toward the back of Fairfield, he donated a stripe of land that bordered his farm, to the county for a road. Using each turn or dogleg bend, you can envision where most of the original property lines were. Farming was always the main occupation of the Schiel family. Corn and cotton were the primary crops and their life was simply lead. Irene Newberry, granddaughter of one of the Schiel son’s owns about 200 acres of the original property. The old home still stands, shaded under giant oak trees and hidden back from sight of the road. In some ways, the Schiel property is still similar to what it was when first settled. Irene spent many summers at her grandfather’s home and remembers the wonderful meats which were smoked in the original smokehouse behind the home. “It was just heavenly,” Irene said. “Even today we sit out here late in the evening. There are two big trees that my Uncle Jake planted when he was a little boy. They are over 100 years old now.” Away from the road you can almost forget that the old two-lane road is changing. Parts have been widened and the number of cars traveling the short distance from Mason to Muschke has tripled. Enjoy the old road while you can. In a few short years the Grand Parkway is scheduled to split the old Schiel Road in half.
