Classroom Management - Proactive measures

• Culture… “In this classroom we…..”

• Total student development… Meaning? Values?

• Responsibility / Integrity syllabus• Who is responsible for student learning??...attendance?...student motivation?..

• Course evals… models teamwork, communications, life skills, etc.

• Classroom leadership to get students to do that which they need to do, but…

• Student names!!• Do you have a system to call on everyone in class by name??

Page 9: Faculty PD Fall 2016 - Wallace Community Collegevideo.wallace.edu/pd/2016_2017/2016_Aug_15_Adjunct/... · 2016. 8. 18. · 8/18/2016 3 General Education Outcomes…’Essential Education’

Classroom Management - Proactive measures

• Off-task students…. Shot chart

• Focus w/ time limit…maximizes learning

• Limited only by self-imposed limitations….it is about the LEARNING!

• Discussion protocol… First outburst? Second outburst? Third?

• Prep from day one…positive reinforcement and taboo terms (immature)

• Sensitive topics… “using logic & principles of personal responsibility, answer…”

• CREATE windows of opportunity for learning

• Challenging situation learning experience!

Page 10: Faculty PD Fall 2016 - Wallace Community Collegevideo.wallace.edu/pd/2016_2017/2016_Aug_15_Adjunct/... · 2016. 8. 18. · 8/18/2016 3 General Education Outcomes…’Essential Education’

Critical Thinking… Questioning the Answer!

• What about your course(s) prepares students for life/ workplace success?

• Definition of ‘child’….without using chronological age (2 min)

• Self-challenge pre-conceived beliefs, feelings, or biases.

• Mentor intervention??...your responsibility• Why not just have them ‘figure it out’?.....college material?

• Floor manager KNOWS strategies to increase productivity/profits by 20% and chooses not to implement. (???)

• Is aware of potential to increase, but does NOT know strategies. (???)

Mexican bandit

So how much money your family makes determines how ‘smart’ you are? Really!?

Best Strategies… use new activities for ‘use of results’ in SPOL

• Learning names….& USING THEM!!

• Article reviews

• Timed assignments!

• One-sentence summary of slide show or video

• Pwrpt video quiz – daily grade

• Pre-Tests!

• Give essay question prior to quiz (objective to learn how to learn)

• Positive reinforcement, especially when developing new skill

Best Strategies… CREATE enhanced learning opportunities!

• Priming… create vision of relevancy/success; power in words

• Day ONE….week ONE objective is to create confidence in learning (cannot skip first step!)

• Cognitive dissonance… mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who

holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time, performs an action that is contradictory to one or more beliefs, ideas or values, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values/principles.

• Predict first, then check for logic… forces use of observations & hypothesis (coins, gold bar, 4L liquid, pendulum, etc.)

• Creates relevancy!

• First step(s) of logical thinking

• Chemistry….partial credit, but not for illogical answer.

What to look for in the classroom…

• Use of student names!

• Questions!…. number; type; distribution

• Evidence of established protocol

• Moving about

• 15 min maximum lecture

• Timed activities

• Positive reinforcement

• Reference unit objectives

• Evidence of prior preparation…both student and teacher

Comments at other colleges…

• “Prepare for university…”

• “Faculty have different philosophies…”

• “Never call or email student about absence…”

• “Oh, I’ve tried this or that….”

• High schoolish…….Middle schoolish…….Elementary schoolish…

• Increase critical thinking and creative reasoning to solve problems

Page 14: Faculty PD Fall 2016 - Wallace Community Collegevideo.wallace.edu/pd/2016_2017/2016_Aug_15_Adjunct/... · 2016. 8. 18. · 8/18/2016 3 General Education Outcomes…’Essential Education’
