MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

At the University of Calgary, we are educating our city’s future leaders and enhancing our institutions growing profile on the world stage by strengthening our commitment to research and scholarship. Our focus lies in enriching the quality and breadth of learning, and being fully integrated with our community.

As Canada’s leading next-generation university, we are improving the student experience and quality of education at the University of Calgary. Our institution is dedicated to providing a diverse, research-informed experience for our students through high-quality teaching from our world-class faculty, as well as relevant hands-on learning opportunities.

At the heart of our Eyes High strategic direction, our efforts have guided the development of the Energy Research Strategy and International Strategy. In 2013, the University of Calgary released the Energy Research Strategy, outlining our institutional approach to engage with energy sector challenges, improve engagement with external stakeholders, and focus our efforts to maximize opportunities and impact. The international strategy — Becoming a Global Intellectual Hub — aims to attract outstanding students and scholars from around the world, and promote diversity of thought and culture with the commitment to become a source for objective information, expertise and collaboration across the world. Support for the Faculty of Law’s Inspiring Energy.Skills.Excellence campaign will help the university achieve these goals by providing valuable funding and resources to some of the country’s top faculty members and researchers in the field of natural resources, energy and environmental law.

With your support and involvement, this $20 million campaign will build a top law school, and a university that will be ranked among the best in North America. Together we are building and laying the groundwork for an extremely promising future.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Cannon President and Vice-Chancellor University of Calgary

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The Faculty of Law is blessed with attributes that make us the envy of other Canadian law schools. Established in 1976 and grounded in the culture of one of North America’s most entrepreneurial cities, we have a youthful vitality and the seasoned experience to place us at the forefront of innovation in Canadian legal education. We are privileged to be part of a great university, in a great city.

As the University of Calgary approaches its 50th anniversary (and the law school’s 40th), we need to continue to build on our strengths. Our ambitious $20 million fundraising goal will inspire energy, skills and excellence in our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and will result in the Faculty of Law becoming:

• The global destination for the study of natural resources, energy and environmental law;

• The Canadian leader in lawyering skills development and;

• Western Canada’s standard of excellence for Juris Doctor programs.

The Faculty of Law succeeds because we connect the teaching and research excellence of the brightest legal scholars with community leaders and innovators.

The landscape of legal education is changing rapidly — from the development of new tools and technologies that increase access to justice, to the need for lawyers to have a strong business acumen. The Faculty of Law wants to be the leader in educating students in this new reality.

Our Inspiring Energy.Skills.Excellence campaign gives you, our forward-thinking alumni, legal professionals, community leaders and business visionaries, the opportunity to join us in ensuring our law school exemplifies energy, skills and excellence for generations to come.

Semper sursum!

Sincerely,

Ian Holloway, QC Dean, Faculty of Law University of Calgary

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS

Our world — increasingly interconnected across borders, industries, technologies and cultures — moves ever faster. It needs lawyers who are well educated and intellectually agile, lawyers who are confident and capable of shaping the legal profession in ways that serve people and advance society. The Faculty of Law’s program produces graduates who answer that call by bringing extensive learning and energetic innovation to their work and society. Through its program of continuing legal education, the Faculty of Law also provides leading edge opportunities for further knowledge and competency development for practicing lawyers.

As the foundation for civil society, the law and its application must reflect the increasingly complex world around us, and is, more than ever, of critical importance to ensuring that interests are balanced and opportunities for prosperity are realized. The evolving expectations from all stakeholders in Canada’s legal community — especially in the areas of energy and the environment — demand that different tools and new ways of thinking and problem solving are core competencies of the legal profession. The Faculty of Law has proven it’s uniquely capable to give its graduates those competencies.

Competition among Canadian law schools is fierce. The opportunity for the Faculty of Law to secure new resources, top students and illustrious faculty has never been better. We must seize this moment to move our school forward, and create significant impact throughout our community and beyond. Thanks to our generous donors, our Inspiring Energy.Skills.Excellence campaign is off to a great start. But there is still much work to do.

Sincerely,

Kerry Dyte, QC Eric Miller Executive Vice President, Senior Vice President & Chief Legal Officer General Counsel & Corporate Secretary Agrium Inc. Cenovus Energy Inc.

Jennifer Koshan wins CALT award

In 2013, Professor Jennifer Koshan — LLB’88 — was awarded the Canadian Association of Law Teachers (CALT) Prize for Academic Excellence, honouring her for exceptional contributions to research and law teaching. Jennifer works hard to bring her research and her work with non-governmental organizations into the classroom to give students experience working with real world legal issues.

Jennifer is the embodiment of the very best of the UCalgary Law spirit. She is passionate about her beliefs, and she is not afraid to challenge students — just as she challenges all of us who work with her — to bring out the best in everyone.– Ian Holloway, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary

THE CAMPAIGN FOR UCALGARY LAW

Like the city it serves, the Faculty of Law aims to lead, not follow. Our community partnerships, as well as our direct link to Calgary’s business and legal community, have driven us to success that was unimaginable when our school was established in 1976. WE ARE CALGARY’S LAW SCHOOL.

But standing still is not an option. We need our donors — our alumni, friends and community leaders — to invest in our continued growth in energy, skills and excellence.

UNAC internship

Led by alumna Linda Taylor — LLB’79 — chief legal secretary at the UN headquarters in New York, the United Nations Association Canada (UNAC) internship program is unique to the University of Calgary and gives law students the opportunity to work at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in South-East Asia. Students assist the office with research and publications, and gain an understanding of the legal issues of the region.

Interning with UNODC was a great life experience and has allowed me to build my networks in international law, which has always been a passion of mine.– Emma Hamilton, JD student, First participant in the UNAC internship program
