In the policy sphere, behavioural economics is a fairly modern branch of economics, one which is still
being explored, with its scope widening alongside each passing day. Since a majority of people have
identical responses to a particular nudge, the slightest tweak in a pre-existing mechanism can orchestrate
massive consequences which sometimes defy basic ideas of rationality. This explains the various nudges
in policymaking. It is in this context, that this theme was chosen for BLISSPOINT 2021.
Keynote Address by Mr. Parameswaran Iyer
The keynote speaker for the event was Mr. Parameswaran Iyer, who has served as an IAS officer and as
Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India. Noted for his pivotal role in
the flagship programmes of the government like the Swachh Bharat Mission and the National Rural
Drinking Water Program, he has bene a source of inspiration for civil servants and youth worldwide.
Sharing his experience both of being in the governemnt and outside, Mr. Iyer drew the attention of the
audience to the new book of his where he reflects about this at length. . Mr. Iyer shared his expertise and
excerpts of his own experiences as a policy maker with all the participants of the seminar. He talked about
how pricniples of behavioural economics were significant in formulating and implementing intricate
public policy projects like the Swachh Bharat Mission and other projects. His discussion revolved around
the effective tools used in the execution of public policy decisions and how these tools have evolved over
the years. This was followed by an interaction with the audience.
Prof. Sanjay Bakshi ( MDI Gurgaon): Lecture on Behavioural Finance
One of the leading minds in the field of value investing Prof. Sanjay Bakshi is one of the best minds in India
in the fields of Value Investing and Behavioral Finance. A professor of 'Behavioural Finance and Business
Valuation" at Management Development Institute, Gurugram, he is also a Managing Partner at
ValueQuest Capital LLP — a value investing specialist in moats investing. ValueQuest advises some of
India’s large family offices in making conservative but meaningful, long-term public market investments.
Having received his M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, Prof.
Bakshi is also a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Prof. Bakshi talked about
how behavioural economics is an emerging and one of the most intriguing fields of economics and gave
an elaborate presentation on how tools of behavioral economics are used in our daily lives to make fruitful
and efficient decisions. He discussed six elaborate models of behavioral economics, explaining its usage
in daily lives as well as its implications for business, investors as well as for effective formulation and
evolution of public policy. With the help of visual media, Prof Bakshi explained various interesting
concepts, theories and effects; the Cobra Effect, Peitzman Effect, Confirmation Bias, Low and High
Contrast Effects, to name some.
Student events
The flagship event was witness to number of student events. Economics Quiz, Mockstock, Business Plan,
paper Presentation, Milgrom-Wilson Football Auction,
Business Plan
The event was a great opportunity to acquire funding for business ideas, feedback on your strategic plan,
and also exposure to the right audience. Judged by Ms. Shivangi Goyal, the participants got some great
insights on their business models.
Paper presentation
The flagship event in memory of Dr. Shailaja S Thakur was witness to young aspiring researchers in six
teams exploring into the depths of certain intriguing topics. The event provided a platform to young
research aspirants to showcase their ideas. Judged by Mrs. Sugandha Huria and Mr. Ankit Joshi, the event
was a huge success with research on topics like "Glass ceiling effect".
Mock Stock
The sizzling Sensex outside should have some presence in the economics event. The Mock Stocks was
witness to fifty participants.
It's a match between your analytical skills and your experience with the iffy stocks. If you want to learn
what it takes conquer the stock market, we've got what you're looking for; an opportunity to think like
and be like an investor for a day by taking part in a mock-stock!
Treasure Hunt
An event which was otherwise organised on land, with students searching for the treasure criss-crossing
the college has gone online. Each team was presented with a group of puzzles, or clues, which they had
to solve in order to find a piece of information. With 2 rounds, each clue led to a virtual locations where
they had to find answers to the question and move on to the next step. 71 teams participated in the same.
Economics Quiz
Quizzing takes multifarious forms from time to time, and is a sphere which covers a colourful range of
domains under its extensive arms. The quiz saw 32 teams participating enthusiastically on topics related
to economics and finance.
Milgrom-Wilson Football League Auction
Named after famed economists Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson, the newly introduced event of the fest,
The Milgrom-Wilson League, takes the classic idea of a football auction and reinvents it to incorporate a
quiz into it, followed by the fantasy league. One has to showcase their football knowledge in quiz, get into
a bidding war and create a team that can compete in the fantasy league.
Mr. Jitesh Rana, The Faculty Advisor of Economics Association, Amrit Kaur and Sanya Bahal, President and General Secretary was in charge of the overall co-ordination and conduct of BLISSPOINT-2021.
