Nationwide cooperations of the Collaborative Research Centers FACTS AND FIGURES CURRENT ERC ADVANCED GRANTS TO FACULTY MEMBERS CURRENT COORDINATED EU AND BMBF PROJECTS CURRENT GRADUATE AND RESEARCH COLLEGES FACULTY OF MEDICINE The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Lud- wig-Maximilians-Univer- sität in Munich are among Europe’s leading centers of scholarly me- dicine. The university is connected to milestones and persons of the history of medicine: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (x-rays), Alois Alzheimer (neurodege- nerative dementia), Max von Pettenkofer (hygi- ene), Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt (sexual hormones), and Feodor Lynen (cholesterol syn- thesis). The faculty is member of all six national cen- ters for health research (translational cancer re- search, pneumology research, infectious disea- ses research, cardiovascular research, diabetes research and neurodegenerative diseases rese- arch). These centers reflect the foci of medical research that are actively pursued in Munich, from the basic preclinical and clinical disciplines to rare diseases research. As part of the national program for excellence the faculty hosts the Munich Clus- ter for Systems Neurology and co- hosts the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences and the Graduate School of Quantitative Biosciences. The Faculty is speaker to six nationally supported Collaborative Research Centers (‘Sonderforschungsberei- che’) by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It hosts five Advanced Grants and four further research pro- jects by the European Re- search Council (ERC) and coordi- nates six national and european projects. The university hospital receives an annual research bud- get of 140 million Euro from the State of Bavaria and secures additio- nal extra funding of over 90 million Euro per year. UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Thanks to its achievements in research, tea- ching and patient care, the University Hos- pitals enjoy an excellent reputation both na- tionally and internationally. Our 10,055 staff members in the areas of medi- cine, patient care, admini- stration, technology and maintenance are taking care of patients in 47 cli- nical departments, insti- tutes and divisions. In addition, 48 interdisci- plinary centers offer individual medical care. Interdisciplinary collaboration of experts from different medical areas enables efficient diagno- sis and therapy. With 2,050 beds, the University of Munich Hospital provides high standards of diagnosis, treatment and nursing, and is, next to the Charité in Berlin, the second largest univer- sity hospital in Germany. 6 NATIONAL CENTERS 185 PROFESSORS 48 DEPARTMENTS 47 INTER- DISCIPLINARY CENTERS 6 COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH CENTERS FACT SHEET RESEARCH 2019 KLINIKUM FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL DER UNIVERSITÄT MÜNCHEN PATIENT CARE* 47 departments 48 interdisciplinary centers 94,671 in-patients 453,180 out-patients 2,058 inpatient beds 10,246 employees 1,773 doctors 3,237 nursing staff ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE* 185 professors 6,798 students 434 PhD graduations 3,134 publications, cumulative impact 16,230 (JIF 2015) 96 Mio € annual third-party funding RESEARCH CONSORTIA 3 clusters of excellence 2 graduate schools 9 graduate and research colleges 6 national centers for medical research Speaker of 6 nationally funded Collaborative Research Centers 6 European Research Council advanced grants (ERCs) 6 coordinated EU- and BMBF funded network projects 94,671 IN-PATIENTS 1,773 DOCTORS 3,237 NURSING STAFF 6,798 STUDENTS 11 GRADUATE SCHOOLS & COLLEGES DKTK – German Cancer Consortium, LMU Speaker Prof. Dr. W.
