IntroductionIn 1999, Factiva editors launched a comprehensive new effort called Intelligent Indexing to help you retrieve more targeted articles in the Publications Library and more relevant results in your CustomClips folders. Intelligent Indexing means that every article in every source in Dow Jones Interactive is indexed by a standard set of terms covering company name, industry, news subject and region, effective December 10, 1999. These codes are the building blocks of CustomClips topics. New codes are added monthly. A complete listing of index terms appears at www.ask.djinteractive.com/indexing.

Types of Indexing Company IndexingAll sources in the Publications Library include company symbols for companies that are discussed at length in the article. The symbols used for US public companies are stock symbols. Factiva editors have created symbols for about 3,000 privately-held companies and 32,000 international companies. To find a symbol in the Publications Library, simply go to the Search By Company channel and click Look Up Symbol. For the most precise searching of companies, enter the symbol after co= in the search box. For example, to search for articles indexed with Microsoft, type co=msft in the search box.

Industry IndexingThere are over 120 industry terms available through Intelligent Indexing. Factiva editors have assigned industry terms to the companies that are indexed so that when a company index term is used, an industry terms based on each company’s greatest source of revenue is automatically appended. Industry terms are also used to identify news items and announcements that may impact an industry, regardless of whether a company is involved. After finding an industry term to search, enter it after de= in the search box, for example, de=airlines. To use the industry code, enter it after in=, for example, in=air. Some industry terms, such as Computing: Encryption could be considered news subjects, so check both listings for the appropriate term.

News Subject IndexingIntelligent Indexing uses over 200 news subject terms to help you retrieve the information you need. Many subject terms are phrases rather than single words for example, Small Business & Entrepreneurs, You can enter the entire phrase or just individual words. By entering individual words, you may retrieve articles indexed with additional terminology by the information provider (see below). Enter the news subject term after de=, for example, de=initial public offerings. To use the news subject code, enter it after ns=, for example, ns=ini in the search box.

Regional IndexingAll articles are indexed by regions of the world including regions, such as Eastern Europe, countries, all the Canadian Provinces and all the US states. Factiva editors have assigned regional terms to most US and Canadian companies based on the location of their corporate headquarters. For a non-US company, the regional term is the country in which the firm’s headquarters is located. In addition, a regional term will be supplied when an article is relevant to a particular country or state, whether or not a company is mentioned. To search for articles using regional indexing, enter the region after the de=, for example, de=eastern europe. To use the regional code, enter it after re=, for example, re=eeu in the search box.

Information Provider IndexingSome information providers add indexing to articles they send to Dow Jones Interactive. All original information provider indexing is retained (with the exception of numeric codes other than SIC codes). This indexing can be used by entering the index term after the de= in the search box. In addition, Factiva editors examine information provider indexing and, when possible, map to them to terms in Intelligent Indexing terms. For example, if an information provider used the index term “residential construction”, it might be mapped to the Intelligent Indexing term “home construction.”

Other Types of Index TermsCertain publications, primarily those published by Dow Jones & Co, are also assigned index terms for Government, Market Sector and Statistics. These terms appear on pages 27-47 of this guide. In addition, there are special layout codes for articles from The Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal Europe, The Asian Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Far Eastern Economic Review, Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post and SmartMoney. These codes appear on pages 27-46.

Page 3: Factiva Indexing Guide.doc

Note: If you are limiting your search terms to a particular field, you must leave the default Look for words in the pull-down menu on Full Article in the Publications Library. When creating a custom folder in CustomClips, you must leave the Look for search statement in the pull-down menu to Full Article.

Tips: To see the indexing terms for a particular article in the Publications Library, choose to display Full Article Plus Indexing. Some private and non-US companies contain a

company symbol prefix (ie. x.ars or t.sun). To search for these symbols in the Publications Library, enclose them in single quotations with the company symbol prefix (i.e. co= ‘x.ars’).name and word count. Some Industry Terms, such as Computing: Encryption could be considered News Subjects, so check both listings for appropriate codes. When entering Industry and New Subjects with colons, you may either insert or delete the colon, for example, “advertising: clients” will retrieve the same article as “advertising clients.”
