What does social media do for us?

• Social media allows all wired agents to interact, share information, and forge some semblance of a professional relationship.

• An online presence is not a replacement for the local, face-to-face contacts, but rather a way to build, maintain, and strengthen these relationships.

• Organizations like the AgChat Foundation (http://agchat.org) are getting farmers engaged in social media, educating them about the technology and providing them with the tools to do this.

• It is a whole lot easier to spend 30 to 45 minutes a day utilizing Facebook or Twitter to communicate with farmers than to travel from location to location.

• If you do not use social media to share the truth, other organizations will tell their perspective to your constituency. Remember – a rumor is halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on...

Develop a reverse-mentor strategy

• The concept of reverse mentoring is said to have begun a decade ago at General Electric when then-CEO, Jack Welch realized he and his management team had much to learn about the Internet.

• Welch required 600 top executives, himself included, to find younger mentors who were knowledgeable about the internet. Most of the mentors were in their 20s and 30s.

• Senior leaders in Coop. Extension need to find younger workers that "reverse-mentor" them to use social media for the success of Clemson University and their constituency.

• Reverse mentoring is a "win-win" relationship. The traditional one-way street becomes a two-way thoroughfare where employees of all ages can learn from each other.

• It is also a great retention tool for the younger generation of employees.

Embrace social media

• Farmers around the world embrace social media.

• Schedule time

• Those who fail to see the benefit of building relationships online are failing their organizations.
