January 2018
New Year Prayer
Loving God, we pray for your blessing upon the students, Staff and families of St. Peter School.
May we approach the New year as an opportunity to celebrate the Many gifts we have and to recognize
Small changes required to become the best we can be. Bless us with confidence to take the risks we need to
learn and grow together. Help us develop our faith so that we possess courage and
Confidence to always do what is right. Help us be compassionate and offer mercy to one another so the world
May know your love and healing power. Bless our school and help us to learn and grown.
On behalf of the entire staff of St. Peter School, I would like to extend our best wishes for a
blessed New Year, as well as our heartfelt thanks for your continued support.
Each new year is a new beginning with anticipation of all that is possible in the next 365 days. It
is an opportunity for a fresh start and a time to reflect on those things that work well and those
things that can be improved. Perhaps these opportunities may come in the form of greater focus
on academics, homework routines etc., or perhaps the focus can be on relationships and bettering
the lives of the people we meet each day.
God always offers us a new day and a new dawn, no matter what has gone before. At the start of
a new year, why not take a moment to thank Him for last year and to dedicate this new year to
Him – to serve Him and to love Him afresh.
We have many exciting events planned in the coming months, and we look forward to the many
opportunities we have to celebrate our school community.
We wish you much health, success and happiness in 2018!

INCLEMENT WEATHER
It is January in Canada, so we are expecting some colder weather this month. Parents/Guardians
are strongly cautioned to take extra care with students travelling to and from school when there
are cold weather and high wind chills. Please note the following:
• All children should be appropriately dressed for extreme cold conditions caused by low
temperatures and high wind chills.
• If the temperature is below -20, the students will be kept indoors at recess.
• School patrols do not go out in extreme cold conditions.
STUDENTS WITH ILLNESS
This is certainly the season of colds, flus, etc. Frequently students come to the office not feeling
well. We call parents in these cases to pick up students and take them home. In the event that
we cannot reach a parent, we try to make the student as comfortable as possible until someone is
able to pick him/her up. Please keep your child at home if he/she is sick.
If you have changed work or cell phone numbers, please update your contact information so that
we can have a contact number in case of emergencies.

• Thank you to everyone who donated and purchased baked goods from our skate night bake
sale! Approximately $350.00 was raised for our playground fund!

• Our next school council meeting will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 6:00pm. The
Friends of SPS foundation meeting will follow at 7pm.
• We would love to see some new faces!

Dear Parents,
The weather in Calgary can be unpredictable. There are Calgary residents
that do not have a warm home to go to during the chilly weather.
To provide assistance, St. Peter School will be participating in the Calgary
Drop-In Centre program called FROSTY BITES.
We are collecting NEW ITEMS (in packages or with tags on) for the
FROSTY BITES program. Please see below for a list of the needed
items.
Please contact the school at 403-500-2079 if you have any questions 😊
Thank you for your assistance!
St. Peter Catholic Community of Caring
Be A Great Dad Want to Be The Father You Always Hoped You’d Be? If you’re like most men, you want to be a ‘great dad’ but your own childhood experiences and beliefs may
be holding you back. You know, dads are supposed to be “distant bread winners”, right?
Ever feel cheated out of close relationships with your children, because it is your responsibility to get
ahead and to pay the bills? Have you ever felt a bit jealous of the close and easy relationship that your
wife has with your children? Are you struggling to make the limited time you have with your children, really
good time that makes up for your long days and frequent absences?
If you’re tired of sacrificing your relationships with your children for work and you’re ready to learn how to
connect with your kids, then consider our Be A Great Dad program.
What We Offer A program for Dads only, led by a male facilitator. The program focuses on building your confidence by
offering you a chance to learn and try out effective strategies for communication, positive discipline, and
role-modeling as well as fostering self-esteem. The program will help you put the limited time you do have
to good use; creating positive experiences for you and your child. What better way to learn than from
other dads who share their experiences of struggle and joy along the journey.
The Benefits of Being A Great Dad; For you:
• Enhanced relationships between yourself, your children and your partner
• New parenting strategies
• Alternative strategies to angry outbursts and power-based parenting
Benefits for your family:
• Having the best dad you can be!
• Increased emotional well-being
• An easier time building trusting relationships with others
• Increased self esteem and positive self-image
• An improved readiness in your children to learn by exploratory behaviour
• Increased opportunities to experience success
• Increased cognitive abilities, contributing to success in school
• Increased social competencies and fewer behavioural problems
You can contribute more than financial stability. You can be that great dad that has fun parenting, who
has close relationships with the kids. It just takes a shift in thinking and some practice, and that’s where
we come in.
The Cost
