I get forced to take highly complex decisions immediately after ordering a cup of Cappuccino.

A second of hesitation and the clerks will freak out!

But this is not the only example of a poorly designed interface

Star Treck teaches us, tomorrow you will not see many keyboard or knob based interfaces any more

no matter how complex a task

It's all gestures, multitouch, intuitive, customizability

Designers often tend to talk about the pre- and the post-iPod era. Touch sensitive controllers, minimized into one jog wheel that intuitively allows all control you need to use a mobile music device became the role model of how a slick intelligent device has to be accessible to the user. Even though the iPod has some control bugs, no one really cares, the interface design is just good enough.

The crucial question will be, how will content like music be consumed and 'handled' in a touchscreen environment?

It's a matter of fact, that the fast developing screen technology and interface design is producing and aiming on more interaction with the device. MoodWheel, is a first hint: A simple on/off switch will not match the users demands any further, if they are presented a device that allows so much more.

Scrolling through tree-like menus, being asked to compile playlists in a time eating manner, tag and sort stuff will be a K.O. criteria as soon as new forms and options to interact with your device

create new habits and thus

a new approach towards media consumption, and therefore towards the content.

Sounds stupid, but all this is habits that changed due to new interface and/or screen technologies

translationsvirtual knobs still are knobs

You agree, nothing about media consumption is for granted or lasting or set.

No matter how used we are to consume media in a certain way.

transforming content, 1:1 across different media or interfaces means to force the user to adopt the handling

from outdated technologies to new ones

... like using a floppy disc with a netbook

The means:Users do - not accept given material

- demand interaction

- preferably use material they can use for self-design

Design is the key,

fashion blogs outrange fashion magazines, blogs outrange traditional media, from myspace profiles to a CV,from a personal letter to a website, from a facebook profile to the personality that you want to be on facebookfrom your individual playlists to the community you share your music with

everything is designed, preferably DIY

Content already IS a matter used for such self-designusers won‘t stop just because it is music, YOUR music

What I want to say,if you want to connect a consumer to your product

allow him to mess around with it

or you‘re screwed.

self-design content

Music

- tracks are being dissolved in playlists, DJ Sets, genre-tags, ...- tracks are being mashed up, cut, mixed to match individual consumption

is combined with rich mediais stored on multiple plattforms and devices

self-design content

What content could match this requirements?

Say a song that can be played with various video edits that you swipe over it, or that can be altered from a pop version to a singer songwriter or dub or instrumental version by a simple gesture you perform on the screen just because you feel like... a Karaoke version, instrumental, tagged not with the usual genre/artist/label/... but with moods, daytimes, occasions, go location based,
