How Much Physical Activity is Enough? It is recommended that students in Years K-6 should participate in 120 – 150 minutes of planned moderate to vigorous physical activity across the school week. This time includes planned weekly sport.During this allocated time, children should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity.

What is Moderate Intensity Physical Activity?Moderate activities make your heart beat faster and your breathing become quicker. These are equivalent to a brisk walking pace, riding a bike or playing small space activities, such as handball.

Game ideaTail grab is a moderate intensity game that can be played with the whole class. Ask all but one student to tuck a braid (tail) into the back of their shorts or pocket. Students move around the designated playing area. The student without a tail attempts to take another student’s tail to keep as their own. Players are not allowed to protect their tail by holding it.

What is Vigorous Intensity Physical Activity?Vigorous intensity physical activity exceeds a brisk walking pace. It involves moving different body parts in a range of movement patterns, such as running, jumping, climbing, dancing and skipping. Vigorous intensity physical activities make you ‘huff and puff’ and develop a light sweat. Simple vigorous games are a great way to get students huffing and puffing.

Game ideaChain tag is a vigorous game that can be played with the whole class. Ask students to scatter within a confined area. Select one student to be the chaser. The chaser attempts to tag someone. Each new person who is tagged joins hands to form a chain. Only the lead student is allowed to tag others. If the chain breaks, no one can be tagged until the chain is reformed.

Classroom Energisers!Classroom energisers are a great way to help achieve the minimum 120 minutes of physical activity a week. A six-minute active classroom activity each week day will add an extra total 30 minutes to the overall minutes of physical activity for the week. Activities with actions such as jumping, star jumps, jogging on the spot, squats, knee lifts and hopping can be easily incorporated into English or Math lessons.

Here are games teachers can plan for students of any stage. 1. As a class, students together call out the timetables whilst

also doing one of the actions.

2. As a class, continuously do one of the actions until the teacher calls out a spelling word and the students freeze. Ask a volunteer to use the word in a sentence. Resume activity and change it up with different actions.

3. Place students into groups of three and provide them with a topic to discuss. Each student is then allocated an action e.g. student 1 hopping, student 2 star jumps etc. Only one student can speak at a time. When student 1 is discussing their view of the topic, all students in the group must do that action i.e. hopping. When the next student speaks, everyone must change their action e.g. when student 2 speaks, everyone must do star jumps. This is a wonderful group activity and ensures each student has a turn at speaking.

4. Teacher calls out maths equation i.e. ‘6+3’ and students do an actions equivalent to the answer i.e. squat 9 times.

5. Allocate an action for vowels and another for consonant letters- go through the alphabet and do the action of the letter. To make it more challenging, spell out words and complete the actions for each consonant or vowel letter.
