Student-Centered TeachingThereisawonderfulinterplaybetweenthemusicalandextra-musicalbenefitsofpianoinstruction. Pianistic growth embraces both practiced skills and the cultivation of an artistic mindset. A rigid, disciplined approach may produce some of the former, but is unlikely to yield insightful analysis, creative daring, and expressive sensitivity. Such attributes of artistry shine at highlevelsofmusicalproficiency, yethaveextraordinaryvalueinallwalksoflife.WithPianoAdventures® we cultivate this artistic mindset…not as a later add-on, but at the core of the earliest levels. This requires our best instruction. It invites us to be student-centered. We don’t merely teach the repertoire; we develop each student. Our teaching with Piano Adventures® fosters analysis, creativity, expression, and nurtures disciplined habits of thought.

A-C-ETM: Analysis, Creativity, ExpressionThese attributes of artistry can be summarized with the acronym A-C-ETM— Analysis, Creativity and Expression. Each of these components is a developed aptitude with a unique role in the artistic mindset. Together they comprise a powerhouse of ability and impact. A musician who understands the analytic structures of music, who creates with these tools and can expresswithmusicalsensitivityandconfidenceispracticingartistry.InPianoAdventures® we feature analysis with the Discovery question paired with each piece; creativity with the Creative activity for each unit; and expression with the Artistry Magic hints and Technique Secrets of the Technique & Artistry Books.

Engagement and Pattern RecognitionGetthestudent’sattentionandfindthepatterns.Thesearethetwoessentialprocessesofpianoteaching. Learning occurs when we have the student’s attention…when the student wants to be here. The repertoire of Piano Adventures® and the vast options from PreTime® to BigTime® provide you with tools to engage each student. Find what is meaningful in the student’s world. Then, when we have the student’s focus, we dig into patterns. Analyze patterns, create with patterns, and express with patterns. This is the essence of the Piano Adventures® curriculum: applying A-C-ETM to visual, aural, and kinesthetic patterns for true artistry.

Spirit of Play

What is this world of the young beginner? It is fun, fantasy,

and exploration. Seriousness? Teacher-driven rules? Tight

control? These close down a young learner’s intrinsic interest.

Playfulness? Creativity? Adventure? These drive the youngster’s

learning. And the multi-sensory world of music makes a perfect context

for such a playful adventure. My First Piano Adventure® takes the young

student into a musical “playground” where we explore, we hear, we look,

we learn. To fully engage the child, the course presents visual, auditory,

and kinesthetic (feel/touch) activities through a spirit of

play, including playmates — the “friends at the

piano” of My First Piano Adventure®.

These five musical friends, along with

Tap the music firefly, pose a new

adventure with each piece:

swimming with a whale,

climbing to a tree house,

riding a birthday train!

Listen to the CD track,

featuring young children’s

voices, and enjoy a large

movement activity. Chat about the

delightful artwork to open communication with the student

and bring the musical page alive. Next, make it tactile at

the piano. Feel the keys and together, sing finger numbers,

letter names, and words. Laugh, imagine, and have

musical fun with the student for a flying start.

Focused Attention

We’ve all heard of the young child’s short attention

span. While this is a valid characteristic to which we

adapt, let’s be equally impressed with the young

child’s focus when emotionally engaged. Have you

heard a youngster say, “Again! Again!” taking delight

with each repetition? These are wonderful moments. So

the capacity for sustained attention is there, even for the

young child.

The key is activity-based learning. A basic “rule of thumb”

is that the length of an activity may roughly correspond to the

child’s age (5 minutes for a 5-year-old). That being said, a

teacher’s observations “in the moment” should always drive

the rhythm of the lesson. If attention wanes, implement

change. Hop off the bench, move to the Writing Table, go on

a Quarter Note Hunt, play rhythm instruments in the Music

Circle, go back to the piano! Keep your lesson plan varied

and be flexible with your student. Celebrate student favorites

and visit them from week to week to glean all their capacity

for musical development. Well-paced activities combined

with a “spirit of play” will create a lesson full of

excitement and focused attention.

Activity 1: Introduction to the “Friends”

(Welcome the students!)

• Let’s sit in a circle on the floor.

We call this the Music Circle.

• As we learn the piano, we’ll meet new friends

who will learn with us. They’re special, just

like each of you is special. Let’s meet them!

(Show each MFPA Friend Poster or picture in the

book. Comment on items that each friend likes.)

• This is Katie.

Who is Katie holding hands with? (dog)

• The dog’s name is Tucker. He loves to listen.

Can you see his ear is up because he’s listening?

Let’s touch his ear. (Students point to ear.)

• What is Katie holding? (paintbrush)

Katie loves to paint. She’s wearing a smock.

Have you ever worn a smock and painted?

• What are some of the things Katie likes?

(beach ball, easel, keyboard, doghouse, etc.)

(Choose the next friend, or let the student choose.)

• This boy’s name is Carlos.

What is Carlos holding? (bat and ball)

• What is on his shirt? (dinosaur)

I’ll bet he knows lots of dinosaur names!

• What are some other things Carlos likes?

(bongo drums, hamburger, slide, etc.)

• Now, let’s look at the twins—Millie and Marta.

One twin likes to curtsy and have tea parties.

Her name is Marta.

• Which twin is Marta? What are some other

things Marta likes? (Discuss.)

• The other twin is the opposite. Her name is

Millie. She likes to wear mis-matched clothing

and run and play. Her braids are always flying

because she’s on the go!

• What are some of the things Millie likes?

Does each measure step or skip? Now transpose to the G 5-finger scale.

CD 14-15 18-21

Warm-Up for Measure 3• Play this measure legato three times.

Notice the same fingers play together.

• Now play it staccato several times. Are your wrists relaxed as you play?

LEVEL 1Student at beginningLevel 1 opens with a full review of note names and reading by step and skip.

Legato and StaccatoBeginning articulations help the music dance. A legato touch is shaped by the wrist.A staccato touch dribbles from a relaxed wrist.

The upward motion of the Wrist Float-off gives expression to the legato phrase, prepares new hand placement, and unlocks the wrist during held notes.

Tonic and DominantIdentifying scale steps 1 and 5 gives a sense of “home” and “away from home” while leading to harmonization with I and V7 chords.

G 5-Finger ScaleReading in three “G Positions” completes the notes of the grand staff and leads to transposition opportunities.

Student at completionIs familiar with all the notes of the Grand Staff and the intervals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Can harmonize with I and V7 chords in the keys of C and G. Plays expressively with fluent tempos and a relaxed wrist.

Visit www.PianoAdventures.com/pedagogy to read about Articulation and the Wrist in Level 1.

Student at beginningCounts rhythm by note duration. Can transpose between C and G. Has a relaxed wrist and is prepped for developing finger dexterity.

8th Notes in Rhythm PatternsWith no 8th notes at previous levels, the student is comfortablewithfasttempiwhichflowthemeterover the bar line. 8th notes are introduced in two-beat patterns for “chunking” of rhythms.

Finger coordination develops with Technique Secret warm-ups that effectively combine slow practice and light “sprints.”

D and A 5-Finger ScalesStudents learn more keyboard patterns by playing piecesbasedonDandA5-fingerscales.

Major and Minor TranspositionsStudents are introduced to the exciting sound of minor with more5-fingerscales,greatpieces,and lots of transposition.

Student at completionCounts rhythm per the time signature (instead of per note duration), reads 8th notes in chunked patterns, recognizes simple chords, and can transpose between major and minor.

Notice this A is one ledger line lower than Middle C.

Student at beginningRecognizes many major and minor 5-finger scales and chords.Harmonizes using the I chord and a simplified V7.

Cross-Hand ArpeggiosBroken chords are played with virtuoso hand crossings in major and minor.

The Major ScaleThe full major scale adds the leading tone to recognition of tonic (step 1) and dominant (step 5).

Connected PedalingBuilding on earlier experience with the damper pedal, the student now learns connected pedaling. Precise drills from the Technique & Artistry Books (Levels 2B and 3A) guide this skill development.

Student at completionKnows one-octave major scales and I, IV, and V7 chords in the keys of C, G, F. Recognizes key signatures with one sharp or flat, intervals of the 6th, and dotted-quarter rhythms.

3/8 and 6/8 metersCompound meter is introduced and compared with the triplet and swing rhythm.

Ledger linesStaff reading is expanded to upper ledger lines, lower ledger lines, and inner ledger lines.

• The pattern of sharps is always the same. Study the rules below.• Now write three complete sharp patterns of your own.

The Sharp Pattern

Sharp Key Signatures

To name a key signature with sharps, follow this rule:

Go up a half step from the last sharp in the key signature.

The name of that note is the name of the key. (Hint: The last sharp in the key signature is the leading tone of the key.)

F# C#G D

Ex. Ex. Last sharp: ____Key name: ____(you write)

Last sharp: ____Key name: ____(you write)

last sharp last sharp last sharp

1. Always begin with F≥.

2. Continue the pattern moving down a 4th and up a fifth.

3. After the fourth sharp, D≥, move down to A≥. Then continue the “up 5, down 4” pattern.

Grand Cadence in E≤

Pomp and Circumstance

Edward Elgar (1857-1934, England)

arranged

Pomp and Circumstance is one of five marches which Elgar composed for orchestra . The title is taken from a phrase in Shakespeare’s play Othello. This ever-popular march has become a standard for high school and college graduations .

Student at beginningPlays in sharp keys and understands major and relative minor. Can identify triads and their inversions, but I, IV and V7 recognition is mostly limited to familiar structures.

I, IV, V in All Inversions, All KeysIn the opening half of the book, an etude precedes each piece to drill I, IV and V chords in all inversions and in stylistic accompaniment settings. The student weaves a “tapestry” of chord tones that relate to the key of each piece.

Two-Octave ArpeggiosStudents develop facility while playing chord tones across the keyboard.

Flat Key SignaturesMajorscalesandpiecesinflatkeys, withspecialtipsforfingering.Three forms of minor scales.

Student at completionRecognizes I, IV and V harmonies in all inversions and in all keys. Fluency with thumb-under scales and passagework. Major, minor and Perfect intervals.

Students at Level 5 and above often work on increasinglydifficultrepertoire—piecesthatcan take weeks or months to learn and polish. It is important to pair that repertoire with shorter pieces that can be learned in a week or two.

For that reason, consider assigning a sequence of books from the BigTime® Piano Library to your advancing students. They can learn pieces quickly, often completing an entire book in just a couple of months. While developing facile reading skill, the contrasting styles and sounds allow work on the essential elements of tone and expression. And, it is fun for the teacher and the student!

A piece in a minor key may sound mysterious, sad, or dark.

A piece in a major key generally has a brighter quality.

Relative Minor KeyEvery major key also has a minor key that shares the same key signature. This minor key is called the relative minor because it is related by key signature.

To find the relative minor scale, start on scale degree 6 of the major scale.

Playing and Listening:1. Play the C major scale above and listen to the sound.

The major scale has half steps between scale degrees 3–4 and 7–8.

2. Now play the A natural minor scale (the relative minor scale). Listen to the difference in sound.

The natural minor scale has half steps between scale degrees 2–3 and 5–6.

Notice that the natural minor scale uses only notes from the relative major scale.

Moderato

The Londonderry Air is a 17th-century Irish folk melody. It has been put to song with countless lyrics, including the highly popular Danny Boy, penned in 1913. The plaintive melody, often played by bagpipes, has been heard at the memorial service of John F. Kennedy and at ceremonies honoring heroic police officers and firefighters.

Directions:

1. First play the melody alone, carefully observing the fingering.

2. Then add L.H. blocked chords on beat 1 of each measure, as indicated by the chord symbols. (See next page.)

Notice there is no chord on the opening upbeats.

Bettyian RouladeFlute Solo by Nancy Faber

Curiouser and CuriouserTrio by Nancy Faber

This unique piece was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) to celebrate the organization’s Year of Collaborative Music, and was debuted at the 2011 MTNA National Convention.

Written for late intermediate to early advanced students, this chamber trio features a “curious” one-note opening followed by a quirky, merry melody that leads the performers to unexpected musical places. The piece ends as mysteriously as it begins—withafinalflourish.

About the FabersNancy and Randall Faber have combined their backgrounds as composer and performer to become leading supporters of piano teachers and students. The husband and wife team has authored over 200 publications, including the bestselling Piano Adventures® method and the PreTime® to BigTime® Piano Supplementary Library.

Nancy Faber was named “Distinguished Composer of the Year” by the Music Teachers National Association, winning the top award for her composition Tennessee Suite for Piano and String Quartet. She penned the winning repertoire for the National Flute Association Chamber Music Competition, was a commissioned composer for MTNA’s Year of Collaborative Music, and has delighted children with her composition The Snow Queen through a grant by the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Foundation. Ms. Faber studied piano at the Eastman School and did her graduate work in composition with Joan Tower, Nicholas Maw and William Albright. Her music has been heard on network television and public radio.

Randall Faber has performed and lectured throughout North America and Asia. He has been Convention Artist for many music teacher organizations and guest artist at universities around the world. Faber has appeared on internationally broadcast television and on public radio in a live recital broadcast. Dr. Faber’s research on motivation and talent development has been featured in journals and media in South Korea, Australia, and at the 9th International Conference on Motivation in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Fabers advocate piano study not only for personal expression and performance success, but also as a vehicle for the student’s creative, cognitive, and personal development. Their philosophy is reflected in their writing, their public appearances, and in their own teaching.
