on FFA trips, but relating my class (Agriscience) to their academic course and the real world is awesome too! Something cool about my FFA Chapter: 2014-15 is the 3rd year BMS has had a full time Agriscience teacher
because we have built our numbers up. Best advice received: “Pick your battles in the classroom with students and with your administration. The little things are not worth worrying about.”
Teacher Spotlight!!!! Allison Hartley Years Teaching: 1 year at Lake Asbury Jr. High and 5 years at Bradford Middle Favorite Thing About Teaching Ag: I really enjoy my time out of class with my students

Two of Manatee County’s new-est teachers grew up in Manatee County; Janyel Smith and Kari Schultz are both happy to be back in their home county as agriscience instructors. Janyel is the newest horticulture instructor at Lakewood Ranch High School in Bradenton, she graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Agricul-tural Education and a minor in horticultural sciences. She taught
as an agriscience teacher for one year in Hendry County and then took a position as a horticulture specialist in Manatee County. She is extremely happy to be back teaching in her home county, as it was a huge goal for her! She is looking forward to coaching Cit-rus, Vegetable Evaluation and OH Demos! Kari is also a product of Manatee County, she is the newest teacher at Braden River High School in Bradenton, and she graduated from The Ohio State University with a Degree in Animal Sciences, and is currently working on a Master ’s degree business. Kari is looking forward to coaching the CDE teams of Veterinary Assisting and Horse Judging.

Farrah Johnson, agriscience teacher at Deltona High School, successfully completed the 12th annual DuPont AgriScience Teachers Ambassador Academy (NATAA) at the company’s Chesapeake Farms in Chestertown, Maryland, and became an Ag Ambassador, along with 250 other teachers from around the country.
The NATAA “Ag Academy” is a professional development institute sponsored by DuPont and a special project of the National FFA Foundation and the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE). This year, 49 agriscience teachers were selected to engage in inquiry-based activities, where they explore state-of-the-art
teaching concepts, with a majority of their training time in hands-on activities on Chesapeake Farms 3,300-acre working farm. For more information on the Ag Ambassador program, visit http://www.naae.org/profdevelopment/nataa.cfm.

The mission of FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success. By supporting our program with the purchase of a specialty license plate, you are helping to ensure that we are able to meet this mission for our students. Your purchase of an Agriculture Education/FFA specialty license plate provides support for all avenues that help to develop opportunities for nearly 30,000 agriscience students.
Helps to support opportunities in student leadership through career development events and award programs.
Contributes to leadership and staff development for over 400 agriscience teachers who are in our classrooms today.
Supports recruitment of agriscience education teachers within the state through various programs of enrichment.
Helps in aiding to market Florida FFA to future and current members.
How Do You Get One? When you renew your registration at your local tax collector’s office, simply let them know you wish to replace your current license plate with a Agricultural Education/FFA specialty license plate. If it is not time in the cycle to replace your metal license plate, you will pay a few additional dollars to switch to a special-ty license plate. Specialty license plates cost a set fee (annually) above the standard Florida license plate, and the fees vary based on the type of license plate. The additional fee paid goes to support the cause for which the special-ty license plate was designed.

XLR8 Award
Retaining quality experienced teachers is important to the future of agricultural education. In 2013, NAAE developed XLR8 — the eXcellence in Leadership for
Retention professional development program — to meet the needs of mid-career agriculture teachers.
The XLR8 program includes participation in an intensive professional development experience (multiple sessions) during the NAAE convention, recurring virtual learning
experiences, and online collaboration using the NAAE professional learning community, Communities of Practice, as well as other social media tools.
The submission deadline is September 26, 2014. All active NAAE members who are currently in their 7th to 15th year of teaching are
eligible to apply. http://www.naae.org/profdevelopment/xlr8.cfm
