Grace and peace,

The holidays are here!

Don’t forget Thanksgiving! Greg Jones of Duke

University once dubbed the time between

Halloween and Christmas as

“Hallowthanksmas!” Halloween and Christmas

are money-makers; Thanksgiving less so. But

this in-between holiday is terribly important if

for no other reason than we take time to

remember that we do not manufacture our

blessings. So much comes to us unbidden. So much good shows

up quite apart from our asking. Before you finish off the

Halloween candy while putting up the Christmas tree, take some

time to see what you have been given and then give thanks in

return.

This year’s calendar rolls from Thanksgiving right into Advent,

the season of preparation. The theme of this year’s observance is

“Surprise!” During our morning worship services we’ll be

reminding ourselves that God cannot be tamed or domesticated.

God’s timetable is not ours; nor does God conform to convention

or expectation. Here’s the line-up:

December 1: Any Day Now (Matthew 24:36-44)

December 8: Bad News Is Good News (Matthew 3:1-12)

December 15: Take a Second Look (Matthew 11:2-11)

December 22: Throwing Away the Rule Book

(Matthew 1:18-25)

Hopefully, we’ll rediscover the stunning truth, as one preacher

put it so well, “God’s middle name is surprise!”

I’ll be looking for you this season!

Bill Ireland,

Senior Pastor
