EYFS Thank you to everyone for bringing in bikes and cycle helmets this week. We have had a great time outside each day with our bikes. We will be using bikes all next week as well – so, if you do not need them at the weekend, you are welcome to leave them in school. The children are improving in their steering and building up their muscles to pedal up the slight gradient we have in the playground! Braking is still proving rather a challenge though! We will be including more photographs in the children’s books so you can see more action photos there. Please could you return the reply slips regarding our IWM Duxford trip – we need to know the number of children who can go and those who are willing to pay the cost of the coach trip. The museum is free for the children to enter – the cost of transport is all we are asking for. This is a fun (and educational) trip and it would be fantastic if we could have your support to take the children there. We have been talking about making predictions in maths – using cars and racing them down slopes, predicting how far each vehicle will go and then testing out our predictions! In English we have been building up our writing stamina and talking about writing on the lines and using finger spaces between the words we write. Some children are using their phonic knowledge to say a word and use the letters they hear to spell and write the word. This is great to see. Our phonics/ reading workshop is planned for February 12 th , in the afternoon, before school pick up. A letter will go out with more details this week. As always, if you have any questions please speak to any of the team in the morning or afternoon, we will do our very best to help you. (We do have lots of clothes still coming into school without names in – so we might not be so good at finding your child’s jumper or cardigan!). Mrs Whyte and the Early Years Team

Thank you to everyone for bringing in bikes and cycle helmets this week. We have had a
great time outside each day with our bikes. We will be using bikes all next week as well –
so, if you do not need them at the weekend, you are welcome to leave them in school.
The children are improving in their steering and building up their muscles to pedal up the
slight gradient we have in the playground! Braking is still proving rather a challenge though!
We will be including more photographs in the children’s books so you can see more action
photos there.
Please could you return the reply slips regarding our IWM Duxford trip – we need to know
the number of children who can go and those who are willing to pay the cost of the coach
trip. The museum is free for the children to enter – the cost of transport is all we are asking
for. This is a fun (and educational) trip and it would be fantastic if we could have your
support to take the children there.
We have been talking about making predictions in maths – using cars and racing them
down slopes, predicting how far each vehicle will go and then testing out our predictions!
In English we have been building up our writing stamina and talking about writing on the
lines and using finger spaces between the words we write. Some children are using their
phonic knowledge to say a word and use the letters they hear to spell and write the word.
This is great to see.
Our phonics/ reading workshop is planned for February 12th, in the afternoon, before school
pick up. A letter will go out with more details this week.

YEAR 2
The Year 2 children have been writing some fabulous food poems – all with a
humorous slant – based on a poem by Michael Rosen! We’ve had lines such
as ‘My chips grew huge red lips’ and ‘My cheese fell on its knees’! The chil-
dren recited Rosen’s poem in assembly and a few children read out their own
poems, too!
The children have also been working hard on evaluating shop-bought soups
(considering the look, smell, taste and packaging) and are now designing a
soup of their own. Everyone is looking forward to buying the ingredients and
making the soup, then tasting it!’

YEAR 3
This week, children in year 3 have been looking at plants and how they grow.
They have completed an experiment to show how water is transported
through a plant. We have also loved acting out our narrative stories so far.
On Mondays, our music lessons have involved starting to play the recorder
and we have learnt about different notes that we can play.
YEAR 5
Over the last few weeks in English we have finished our Chinese postcards and started
writing Newspaper reports about the discovery of the ‘Oracle Bones’.
In Maths, we have finished our unit on statistics and started our unit on fractions ,whilst in
science we have been investigating the properties of materials. We are conducting an
experiment on Friday and would appreciate any spare empty plastic bottles (1.5-2 ltrs) you
may have at home.
In PE we are creating our own games based on sports including football and netball, which
has led to some exciting and interesting new rules.
In art we have been experimenting with different techniques (with Miss Cox) including
pointillism and in ICT we have been learning the difference between mis-information and
dis-information.
We have also started to compare creation theories according to different religions.
YEAR 1
Year 1 absolutely loved the Bury St
Edmund’s theatre trip. The children
were laughing throughout and
enjoyed seeing the story of Peter Pan
being bought to life. The ‘boxes’ we
sat in were very comfortable and we
had a super view as well. We
particularly enjoyed the mermaid
scene and the wonderful songs.

YEAR 4
Our highlight this week has
definitely been the visit from
Olaf the Viking! We all had an
amazing day as he taught us
how to be a Viking. We learnt
about Viking beliefs, traditions
and llifestyle. We even had a
fierce battle between Anglo-
Saxons and Vikings!
We have used this information
to investigate artefacts and
write our own instructions for
how to successfully prepare for
an invasion.

Year 6
We have enjoyed a busy start to the Spring term and our new topic. The
children have been working extremely hard, producing work that they can be
extremely proud of. We have studied the causes and impact of deforestation
in the Amazon rainforest and the children have written some fabulous poems
comparing the initial beauty of the Rainforest before the destruction caused
by human interference. In Design Technology, we have created our own
rainforest creatures and modelled them with clay to show how they have
developed adaptations which enable them to survive in their special habitat.
In mathematics, we have been developing our understanding of fractions,
decimals and percentages, and using mathematical enquiry and
investigation to deepen our knowledge. The children are also enjoying using
our‘ Times-table Rockstar’ app to improve their speed and confidence.
We have just begun our unit of writing focussed on ‘suspense’, and children
have spent the week planning the stories that they want to write. We look
forward to sharing the final versions with you all!
A reminder that early-morning ‘booster’ sessions have now started on a
Thursday morning, and all children in Year 6 are welcome to attend these. It
was good to see many of you at the SATs information briefing for parents last
week, but anybody who was unable to attend but would still like to see me
with regard to the plan for SATs week, please feel free to contact me via the
