EXTRUSION

Introduction

Extrusion is a bulk forming process in which the material is made to flow using high pressure. The deformation takes places mainly at room temperature -cold extrusion - as by this means plate-finished workpieces with close dimensional accuracy are obtained. The billets are only heated to forging temperature - hot extrusion .

Indirect Extrusion

he hollow ram containing the die is kept stationary and the container with the billet is caused to move. Friction at the die only (no relative movement at the container wall) requires roughly constant pressure.

Direct Extrusion

The metal billet is placed in a container and driven through the die by the ram. Friction is at the die and container wall requires higher pressure than indirect extrusion.

IMPACT EXTRUSION

•  A manufacturing process in which a small shot of solid material is placed in the die and is impacted by a ram, which causes cold flow in the material.

• It may be either direct or indirect extrusion and it is usually performed on a high- speed mechanical press.

HYDROSTATIC EXTRUSION

Hydrostatic extrusion is actually a form of direct extrusion. The liquid applies pressure to all surfaces of the work billet. When the ram moves forward, it is the force from the incompressible fluid that pushes the work through the die, extruding the metal part.
