EXTREME(AMAZON;(LIFE(IN(THE(FLOODED(FOREST:(ABSTRACT(!Rainforests!are!the!“lungs!of!the!planet”!providing!over!20%!of!our!breathable!oxygen.!Tropical!rainforest!are!found!along!the!equator!and!cover!only!6%!of!the!planet,!however!they!hold!over!50%!of!the!known!living!organisms.!The!rainfall!in!the!Amazon!averages!9ft!per!year!while!Oklahoma!only!averages!about!2ft!per!year.!The!Amazon!vegetation!is!divided!into!layers,!the!tallest!trees!are!in!the!emergent!layer,!the!next!layer,!being!the!canopy,!has!trees!with!large!leaves!that!act!as!a!shady!umbrella.!The!understory!and!forest!floor!receive!very!little!light!due!to!the!dense!vegetation,!however!they!are!alive!with!an!abundance!of!life,!including!insects,!decomposers,!and!large!mammals.!The!canopy!holds!the!most!life;!in!fact!the!vegetation!is!so!dense!that!there!are!many!species!that!have!not!been!discovered!due!to!inaccessibility.!The!Amazon!rainforest!is!the!largest!rainforest!with!the!highest!biodiversity!of!fish!on!the!planet!(approximately!3,000!species).!Some!of!the!fish!of!the!Amazon!are!carnivorous!like!some!piranha,!while!others!eat!fruits!and!nuts!that!fall!in!the!water.!Two!of!the!world’s!largest!freshwater!fish!make!their!home!in!the!Amazon,!the!arapaima!which!reaches!lengths!of!10ft!and!the!piraiba!which!can!weigh!over!500lbs.!The!Amazon!river!is!!4,000!miles!long!and!provides!the!earth!with!16%!of!its!freshwater.!The!Amazon!forest!is!continually!growing!forest!which!is!flooded!over!half!the!year.!Flooding!is!caused!by!the!melting!snow!and!ice!in!the!Andes!mountains.!Organisms!in!the!rainforest!are!closely!linked!to!each!other!in!a!series!of!symbiotic!relationships.!For!example,!a!sloth’s!hair!is!hollow!allowing!green!algae!to!grow!that!enables!the!sloth!to!camouflage!among!the!lichen!covered!trees.!Species!of!moth!(cryptoses)!live!only!in!the!hair!of!the!sloth!and!feed!on!the!algae!that!grow!on!the!hair.!With!such!interconnected!relationships!the!extinction!of!one!species,!could!deteriorate!another!to!extinction.!!Almost!everything!we!buy!in!a!grocery!store,!or!come!in!contact!with!each!day!comes!from!the!rainforest.!For!instance!palm!oil!is!in!everything!from!cereal!to!cleaning!supplies,!which!makes!it!no!surprise!that!its!production!is!one!of!the!top!threats!to!the!rainforest.!Trees!are!cleared!to!plant!palm!plantations.!One!palm!plantation!not!only!destroys!trees,!it!also!destroys!watersheds,!food!resources!and!homes!for!many!indigenous!people.!Palm!plantations!are!going!up!at!an!alarming!rate!due!to!the!fact!that!50%!of!everything!in!a!grocery!store!contains!palm!oil.!Indigenous!people!are!the!most!valuable!species!to!protect.!Indigenous!tribes!have!been!living!off!the!land!in!a!sustainable!way!since!before!recorded!history,!and!may!hold!the!key!to!discovering!a!medicine!that!could!cure!cancer.!!We!are!losing!1.5!acres!per!second,!if!this!trend!continues!there!will!not!be!any!rainforest!left!to!clean!our!air!or!provide!us!with!most!of!the!pharmaceuticals!we!rely!on!to!fight!serious!diseases.!When!rainforest!are!cut!down,!not!only!do!they!stop!filtering!carbon!dioxide!from!the!atmosphere,!they!release!all!the!carbon!dioxide!they!once!held.!There!are!small!changes!we!can!make!everyday!to!protect!the!rainforest.!It!is!our!responsibility!to!make!a!change!now!to!protect!the!next!generation’s!future.!!!!!(((((((((

The!rain!forest!generates!more!than!just!food.!The!rubber!tree!produces!latex!(liquid!rubber).!Rubber!is!used!to!make!rubber!bands,!tires,!balloons,!erasers,!and!balls.!There!is!also!a!tree!that!produces!chicle,!the!gummy!substance!used!to!make!chewing!gum!!
Many!plants!in!the!rain!forest!can!cure!diseases!–!these!plants!are!called!medicinal(plants.(About!oneffourth!of!all!the!medicines!we!use!come!from!rain!forest!plants.!There!are!also!plants!that!produce!the!oils!found!in!insect!repellents,!suntan!lotions,!soaps,!and!perfumes.!Your!medicine!cabinet!may!be!full!of!things!from!the!rain!forest!!
Today,!much!of!the!rain!forest!is!being!cut!down!for!lumber!and!to!make!room!for!cattle!and!farming.!Unfortunately,!few!new!trees!are!planted!and!the!rain!forest!is!shrinking!day!by!day.!Soon,!there!will!be!very!little!left!of!the!fruit!trees,!rubber!trees,!and!medicinal!plants.!Even!the!rain!forest!animals!will!no!longer!have!a!home.!
Fortunately,!however,!there!are!ways!to!conserve(the!rain!forest.!Trees!can!be!planted!on!land!that!has!been!cleared.!We!can!use!products!from!the!rain!forest!without!destroying!it:!nuts,!fruits,!and!plants!can!be!gathered!carefully,!and!latex!can!be!taken!from!the!same!rubber!trees!year!after!year.!If!we!are!careful,!we!can!enjoy!the!products!of!the!rain!forest!while!also!helping!to!maintain!it!as!a!healthy!and!fruitful!environment.!
