Introduction: Pusat PenyelidikanDadah & Ubat- Ubatan

• First established on recommendation by World Health Organization (WHO) in 1973

• Selected as one of the Higher Institutions' Centres of Excellence (HICoE) by the Ministry of Higher Education.

• Established Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pharmaniaga Berhad

• Provide consultancy services to advise on the optimization of analytical, extraction process and the identification of phytocompounds for the Kacip Fatimah Project.

Introduction: Cinnamomum iners

• Local name : • Kayu Manis Hutan

• English name : Wild Cinnamom

• Diagnostic characters :

• Leaves pink when young

• Glaucous beneath with three longitudinal veins

• Crushed fresh leaves and inner bark with strong smell of cinnamon

• Fruit green with yellow spots when young, dark blue when ripen

Project

• Extraction process by using soxhletmethod

• Used 4 types of solvents; petroleumether, dichloromethane, methanol andwater

• Extraction of the tree’s bark

• Trunk straight, bark smooth, greyish-brown, inner bark pinkish with strongfragrant smell.

• The timber is insect resistent and usedfor house building and cabinet work.

• The bark yields an inferior grade ofcinnamon but oil distilled from it andfrom the leaves can be used forflavouring and for incense sticks.

Method

Grinding • The bark was grinded by using grinder

Extraction • Soxhlet method

Analysis•GC-MS

• IR

• Enzyme assay

• Paper chromatography

Extraction

25 g of dried, grinded C. iners bark was weighed and transferred into a

thimble

The soxhlet apparatus was set up; apparatus

consisted of chiller at the top, soxhlet in the middle and round bottom flask at

the bottom

A few anti bumping chips were added into the round bottom flask

Solvent was added until the round bottom flask was half full. ~600ml

Chiller and heat was turned on and the

temperature was set

Solvent was dried by using rotary evaporator

Procedure was repeated by using

dichloromethane, ethanol and deionized water

Experience/ knowledge

• I obtained precious experiences regarding on how toconduct research like a postgrad student

• Basically, all related more to organic chemistry, subcategory of natural products.

• Lab technicians explained step by step procedures onhow to prepare the samples, analyze them and also howto interpret the results.

• All the information obtained are hard to find atsomewhere else.

Conclusion

• The industrial training at here is very fun and exciting.

• This is because the students are exposed on how tohandle the machine ourselves and at the same time newprecious experiences are obtained.

• The Center provides good facilities and moderninstruments.

• Thus, faster results can be attained.

• This helps to save a lot of time and also give preciseresults.

Comment/suggestion

• By only using GC-MS, FT-IR, enzyme assay and paperchromatography, the identities of the compounds arestill not well known.

• Thus, further analysis should be done in order to revealmore the structure and activity of the compounds.

• This Center is a good place for students to do internshipor postgrad, especially for people that are interested inorganic chemistry and research field.

• The students must be high discipline and able to workindependently.
