PROPOSAL IN BRIEF

At this stage in my work, the project was concerned with the subject of communication design in the public view. Its aim was to explore public reaction to design and interactions, as well as the history and potential future of communication technologies and methods. At this stage in the project I knew all my work was to do with communication but had a hard time working out anything more specific than that. I continued to explore the topic in order to find a relevant contextual influence that could help me narrow my aim and find an interesting niche to explore through design.

GETTING NOTICED

In this part of the project, I was looking at what forms of advertising gain more attention, which ones are worth pursuing and which are not? Can I get a decent response within a few days? Is targeting a market better than advertising to everyone? I set out to answer these questions and more through the sale on promotion of my own art and design products. RESEARCHI began this area of the project by creating a sandwich board poster that I took around in the public space, this was to work out if a purely visual advertisement has any real immediate sway in a busy city environment. I soon found the response was quite minimal and that a more active approach was needed. After winning a competition that I had found through a Facebook post I decided to imitate it by producing my own competition and promoting it using direct interaction with users. It was at this point that I also began to create my own website as a platform to promote some of my design work. I browsed a number of website designed by my peers in 3rd year graphics and found them really helpful in providing me with some contextual and contemporary influence.

The situation as “a moment of life concretely and deliberately constructed by the collective organization of a unitary ambiance and a game of events”.

Looking at the situationist movement as a way of turning expressions of the capitalist system against itself was an interesting part of my research. It influenced this part of the project in that I eventually decided to go for a more direct and interactive approach when promoting my work. This art movement also influenced some of my later work looking at CCTV.

DEVELOPMENT

By setting up my own competition I got an idea of how this method of communication can be used to reach a particular audience. I created a banner for use as an advertisement and also created a small flier linking to my page. The online response generated from direct interactions with users constituted the bulk of page visits and showed me that targeting a certain audience is good for generating interest.

The flier I used a call to action attempted to entice the recipient to respond, however I feel like the design, and reward prospects weren’t good enough to garner a considerable response

However there was a small response to the competition question. These were generated entirely online.

In tandem with my Facebook competition page I also set up a website shop as a touch base for selling my design work.

The basic design took its theme from my love of traditional art techniques whilst trying to maintain a level of professionalism. At this stage I had little to no idea how to create a website and get it online etc. I quickly learned that a static website could be made using Photoshop and dreamweaver. I learnt to do it all using in-structional videos and also researched into all the technical side of things (getting a domain name, setting up a server etc.)

Initial designs incorporated pens, paint brushed, ribbon banners and a uniquely stylized font. All representative of my personal passions.

The first live incarnation of my website was simplistic and contained just the most relevant information. I liked this setup, but the size was too small for most browsers and I felt I could do more with the design aspects. I eventually came up with a more informative and refined edition that is now live at Drummondesign.comThe design is still static and quite basic but in the future I hope to change this and create a more interactive website.

Taking to the streets I went about distributing my fliers in an attempt to garner some form of response. The video I created documenting the process shows the number of people who reject interaction and the number of people who accept it. Giving an insight into what its like handing out fliers in public.

REFLECTION

Looking back over this part of the project I am pleased with some of what I have achieved. Embarking into the public environment and interacting with people there was a fruitless yet still relevant and educational experience. I began to understand the dynamic of gaining attention in different environments and online and applied this understanding to my designed outcomes. From here I began contemplating how our technologically advanced society has moved the bulk of its marketing communications online. We have come a long way in the 22 years I’ve been alive, and if we don’t manage to completely annihilate ourselves that development is only set to speed up exponentially. Who knows what the future will bring and how the way we communicate may change.

COMMUNICATION TECH

Looking over the history of communication gave me some context when beginning to consider how it may change over time and into the future. Language as we know it has evolved quite recently in biological terms. Beginning with the first proper alphabet (readable symbols represented with phonetic sounds) known as cuneiform.

RESEARCH

I made a time-line depicting the progression of technological forms of communication throughout time and considered some of the future possibilities. I also considered what implications this might have for the public communication landscape. If we begin to integrate our minds into a digital landscape, how might that change our methods of communication?

Tech has already developed to include our thoughts and speech as input methods, its rapidly developing to also integrate with the mechanical and psychological aspects of our being too.

Virtual reality offers an alternative plane of existence for one to experience things inside. Its an technology that is still in its very early days however there is massive potential for it to become more widespread and integrated in our lives. Virtual reality headsets can immerse the individual in a realm that is so convincing that it is not hard to see the small leap the tech would have to take in order to become fully believable as reality.

Augmented reality also offers a distinctly digital way of interacting with our surroundings. This form visual overlay Is currently being developed to help users organise their lives.

DEVELOPMENTI developed some illustrations depicting possible future advancements in communication technologies. I wanted to get my audience thinking about how in the future, companies, businesses and other organisations will almost definitely exploit these channels to promote their products etc. Communication is forever changing in its variety

body. We may one day have digital neural implants

that augment the way we perceive reality in real time.

What is interesting is that how these technologies

may develop and be used is still a mystery, although

it may have implications in warfare, disability,treatment, cognitive enhancement, and

many other interesting ways.

FUTURE COLLAGE

Experimenting with some paper collage techniques I aimed to create some interesting visuals that could further represent the ideas surrounding the development of communication tech. When watching the movie “waking life” I scientist talks about the telescopic evolution of human capabilities. This theory basically describes how the advancement of tech is constantly speeding up and that we are reaching a point where our technology is developing at an exponential rate.

After exploring collaging I produced these amorphous computer-like compositions, placed with the text, it inspires thought into the reality if consciousness, computation and their relationship with communication and tech.

The I phone of today would be completely alien to the Nokia 35010i user of 2000, and that’s with only 16 years of technological development. Technology in 2116 will be so fundamentally different from the stuff we are used to today that it would also be considered alien and bizarrely complex.

This is the idea I wanted to capture here, by using familiar imagery in a way that make the composition unfamiliar it speaks to the notion of incomprehensible complexity.

THE I CAN

The I can, a state of the art communications device capable of transmitting information over

large distances. Or not. Here I was toying with the visual and idealistic clash of historic and

current technologies. I had no proper direction with this part of the project apart from it being

related to communication however it did play a role in later parts of the project.

Again exploring the use adaptations of the I Can, incorporating a mouth and ear piece.

CODES + ENCRYPTIONAfter creating the idea of the I Can and thinking about how, that particular form of communication is basically an ancestor to the modern day phone. Its simplicity mechanical design means that its serve one basic purpose, transmitting information from A to B. No internet no wires no screen no candy crush. And whist this obviously has its down sides you cant avoid the fact that this type of analogue communication is practically uninterceptable by any one. With the advent of computational tech and the internet I wanted to Explore the juxtaposition of Analogue and Digital the old and the new, and so I started to develop a form of code. That felt very rustic and physical, as opposed to digital and electronically generated.

RESEARCHLooking at the history of coded communication, pictographic representations and modern encryption technology I found that the majority of the online data traffic that happens globally nowadays gets intercepted by different countries spying on each other and sharing the information, in attempts to circumvent the laws of their own country. This example of mass surveillance is something unseen before in human history. This unsettling notion is what set the tone for the rest of my project here on out.

I looked into some examples of the earliest forms of aboriginal pictographic representations, I wanted to capture some of that “pre-Digital” feeling. I also found some interesting code like alphabets that other people had made online. Looking more into the subject of privacy and surveillance I began looking into Edward Snowden a lot more and what he has to say. A lot of his opinions rang true with me and he makes it clear that as a society our level of privacy is at an all time low and its having an effect on the balance of power in society.

DEVELOPMENT

I began developing the code by using fontstruct to build a typeface, this served as a good

exercise and allowed me to experiment with different arrangements and such. I felt the

fontstruct version needed some refinement and I was also keep to maintain a non digital final outcome. These big rubber stamps that each represented a letter helped me achieve that

traditional feel.

These test prints in ink show how my initial stamps were much smaller and differed slightly in their form.

Upon discussion with peers I enlarged the typeface and refined the forms.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,

another test page that actually came out quite nicely, shows the whole alphabet, and this is the

script that I will later use to reproduce and turn into posters and other

ephemera.

Experimenting with the text overlay I tried a number of different layering orders to try and get a strong perspec-tive of both the type and the code. Its difficult to get the balance but I think this might be the best I managed. The underlying message beginning to play with quotes and saying.

First reconstruction of the typeface on a poster, with an underline giving clues to the translation only when looked at from up close.

OUTCOMES

The entire graphic cypher, Named as Aeleonaorae, and laid out in a clear

practical manner utilising a 3 colour scheme black white and red, a theme

that was stuck to throughout.

The underlined script theme from a previously explored visual layout is reproduced here with a more direct message relating to the topic discussed in the Explanatory booklet.

I also fabricated a small box to keep all of the rubber stamps

in. As a graphic product that can and

should be reused.

REFLECTION

Looking back over this part of the project I feel I began to form a real interest in these uneasy notions that in the digital age we are always being watched and all our personal communications and information are interpreted on a daily basis. The Graphic cypher addresses this issue in an artistic and conceptual way. Highlighting the underdeveloped nature of public privacy safeguards and technologies. It is my understanding that the public aren’t that worried about their privacy simply because they are unaware of the full extent to which their everyday lives are being surveilled. Not only that but the potential implications of that may also be unclear, or yet to come. In order to combat this I decided to focus much of the rest of my project on Informing people of the situation. Helping people understand exactly how they are being watch, why, the implications, and what they can do reclaim some of their privacy.

SURVEILLANCE

Reading into Edward Snowden and the battle he has been through in order to make

the public aware of the immoral actions governments take in order to collect

personal information in bulk. Its absolutely shocking to think that the revelation Snowden bought to light could have

otherwise gone unrealized into the present. And even though we now know all this, it seems as though, due to clever spin and

distraction that we have forgotten to have a discussion about privacy surveillance and

the implications of that activity.

RECLAIM YOUR PRIVACY VIDEO - RESEARCH

Whilst doing my research into Snowden I found that he is a big activist and does a lot of talk about privacy surveillance and other tech related subjects. Some of his main worries surround the ways in which our personal information is farmed for the profits of corporations. Its really eye opening stuff. I found one video in which Snowden talks about pre criminal investigation, and the capability that authorities now have in order to trace a persons history and penalise them for things they did in the past. This is worrying because. The judge of what is good and what is bad is whatever authority that holds power. Policy is open to change and before you know it, the police are at your house wanting to arrest you to “come with them” because of your religious affiliation, or maybe you did something in 1998 that was legal then but punishable now. Through my work I have demonstrated that the implications of mass surveillance are commonly

Underestimated. It is this type of clear and coherent commentary by Snowden that really puts the current situation into perspective. And so I chose a passage of the video in which to isolate the audio and use it over some more interesting imagery, to appeal to a wider audience, make it more visually interesting and inform people.

DEVELOPMENT

The first version of my video consisted of moving images loosely related to the topic, I went around Bristol and recorded people, CCTV and other scenes that I thought might be of use. I took all the video back and created a rudimentary video utilising only sound and image. This proved to work OK but I felt it needed some more work to make it more interesting to watch and to also replace some of the footage creating a more succinct outcome. I had a look at some editing techniques and it was suggested that I look at the intro to the movie “enemy of the state”. The Transitional and editorial effects give an “electronic authoritarian” vibe, fast paced, crude, but sophisticated.I went for a similar style but emphasized the “corrupted” nature of surveillance through visual distortions. With more of a stealthy, and precise vibe.

It makes use of transition effects and visual distortion in order to emphasize the topics being spoken about by

Snowden. It presents a bleak image of CCTV capabilities and has been designed to make one more concerned for

they privacy.

RECLAIM YOUR PRIVACY POSTERS - RESEARCHWhen watching another videoInvolving Snowden, He explained in a very simple yet thorough way how the governments of the world and some big businesses share surveillance information freely. They have created a “supra-national” organisation in which no one country answers to their own surveillance laws. He also discusses the need to resist conformity and reclaim privacy by stating that if we change the way we behave because the government is wrongly intruding on our lives. We become submissive and controlled. Personal liberties and freedom of expression become suppressed, a bit at a time. Ensuring the population largely behaves how the government want it to.

I went back over the idea that we are really the first generation who have had to face anything like this and that the tech that preceded us never had the privacy flaw. We could all switch back to those methods but its illogical. We will always want to make full use of technology, but will we ever want to stop the establishment from

My first version of the information outcome incorporated a poem and a link to a really useful site for understanding the state of surveillance in our country. I felt that the poster needed to be elaborated upon and discuss more precisely current issues in the context of surveillance and privacy.

In the UK there are 653 Government bodies that are able to use sophisticated techniques to highlight individuals of interest and intercept their personal phone calls. This could include targeting fly tippers, drug dealers and other criminal activity but often results in innocent people being bugged because of flaws in the administration.

Bringing these outcomes forward I aimed to catch peoples

attention through a bold pair of headlines. The first to make you

think “really”? and the second to make you think, “you cant justify that” upon reading the

text one realises that the poster is not really advocating a switch

back to analogue methods of communication but instead is joking with the idea that most people don’t know of the top

of their head any other way of effectively evading surveillance.

Most perceive “operational security” as a difficult thing to maintain, these posters aim to point out that its actually a lot more practical to secure your

data and communications rather than changing the method of

communicating entirely.The font used in these posters

is the same font that the government use in their official

documentation like on gov.uk. This gives the visuals an authoritative aesthetic, and

ironic twist

CCTV - RESEARCH

Looking through a lot of CCTV related artwork I came across a lot of inspiring stuff. A big thing was people

placing CCTV cameras in interesting places or in vast numbers. I thought that this type of site specific design

could be exploited for its artistic merit and also the deterrent effect CCTV has on crime (mainly theft). I

found online that dummy CCTV units are a thing. There is a rather large market for them and I felt if I could

make my own deterrent and distribute the means for other people to create their own you could potentially

protect your assets on the cheap. Most people cant afford a real surveillance system this may at least offer

a temporary form of security.

Its also interesting to note how people react to the presence of CCTV or the over use of CCTV. By

erecting systems in an environment there is a level of authoritarian feel surrounding the expansive use of

cameras.

I went about developing some paper net CCTV cameras that could be printed on a3 to make a realistic looking dummy camera complete with input cable and wall bracket. The first, unrefined nets proved to fool quite a few people upon first glance. But at closer inspection it was quite apparent that they were made (quite badly) out of paper. So I worked on my net designs and got them printed out a number of times, making changes where needed in order to perfect a stere-otypical model of what a CCTV camera should look like.

OUTCOMES

I developed the net to a point where I felt it was convincing enough to fool most from a distance. I

included the net in a booklet with a paper insert that gave some background information on the topic of privacy and surveillance. The outcome follows

a certain colour scheme and style. The yellow and black is reminiscent of warning signs used to remind

people that a public space is under surveillance (24 hr surveillance operation in progress). This could

well be just as much of a deterrent as actual CCTV camera so I felt like it was important to include that

aesthetic.

The nets are mucked up on one side to give the eventual outcome a realistic visual feel . worn torn

and used.

The kit Includes instructions and background information, Making people aware of issues surrounding surveillance but at the same time giving them in interactive element that will surely be a physical reminder that we are always being watched. I would like to have spent a bit more time erecting my design in the public space and documenting the response but I feel like I have created this kit that will as well allow others to try it out and test the boundaries of surveillance perceptions.

REFLECTION

Looking back over this part of my project I was really enthused to have found a topic I was interested in and that could provide plenty research material. I really enjoyed creating the Edward Snowden talk video and it was surprising because I haven’t done anything in motion media for a long while. I quickly picked up video editing again and managed to create a, what I think is a really interesting and informative (if not a bit chilling) outcome. Doing research into Snowden and making all these revelations surrounding privacy for my self, I became ever more shocked at the things I didn’t already know about the issue. Yet all this information is out there. Its just not widely publicized. To remedy this I bring more information to my audience through my outcomes, attempting to almost shock people into having a bit more concern for their privacy. Noon really cares at the moment because it doesn’t directly effect them right now. But as explained throughout my project. When your privacy is at risk, so is your liberty. My project overall I feel, has been somewhat successful. Due to a number of reasons I struggled to find a topic that I was enthusiastic enough about to create a wide and comprehensive range of outcomes. When I finally did settle on surveillance, a subject I was a lot more passionate about, I was able to express my creativity much better. I feel like I have created some worthwhile outcomes that address the subject thoroughly however, if I had settled on this topic a lot earlier , I might have a more extensive project incorporating more final outcomes.

Overall what I have achieved has been a worthwhile learning experience and the topics I have addressed should become a lot clearer and poignant in the minds of my audience.
