I CALL uponparents, businesspeople and profes-sionals to participatein the upcomingSchool GoverningBody (SGB) electionstaking place between6 and 28 March.
Voting gives people the electorate power toexercise their democratic right. By voting, electorates will be able to give a specificdirection of how to govern their schools toimprove teacher and learner discipline andimprove scholastic performance.
I urge voters to choose resourcefulcommunity builders with relevant experi-ence in different spheres to ensure that SGBmembers are drawn from all walks of lifeand embody a diverse representation.
A school governing body must ensure thata school is governed in the best interest ofall the stakeholders; members must alwaysput the best interest of the school before anypersonal interest.
The SGB is made up of elected members, the principal by virtue of his or her officialcapacity and co-opted members.
In a case of a special school, it should becomposed as follows: parents of learnersenrolled at the school, if reasonably, teachersat the school, members of staff at the schoolwho are not teachers, learners in gr. 8 orhigher and a representative of an organisa-tion of parents with special needs, sponsor-ing bodies, organisations of disabled persons, disabled persons, experts in relevant fields ofspecial needs education and the principal byvirtue of his or her official capacity.
According to the South African Act, itstipulates that an SGB must: adopt aconstitution setting out how the SGB willoperate and help the principal, teachers andother staff members to perform theirprofessional functions. Other key responsibil-ities of the SGB are: decision making, planning, conflict management, teambuilding and negotiation and school finances.
About 1 400 schools are expected toparticipate in the 2015 SGB election. Theimportance of a school governing bodycannot be over-emphasised.
Education is a social responsibility andthrough the SGB, public participation isensured.

SMALL BUSINESS MINISTER LINDIWEZULU will address key stakeholders in thesmall and township business sector onFriday (20/02) at the Emoya Estate inBloemfontein starting at 08:00.
According to a statement released onMonday (16/02) by the Free State Depart-ment of Economic Development, Tourism,Environmental Affairs and Small BusinessDevelopment, small and township business-es are critical for local economic develop-ment. Foreign traders have also become anintegral part of this equation.
The department said the available bodyof research indicated that the pre-2000landscape of South Africa’s townshipbusiness was dominated by small, mainlyinformal businesses referred to as spaza ortuck shops.
Research shows that there is a need forthese businesses to be attended to or giventhe attention it deserves.
It is for this reasons that the MEC forEconomic Development, Tourism andEnvironmental Affairs and Small BusinessDevelopment, Mosebenzi Zwane, has called
for a dialogue among key stakeholders tolook at the following issues: trade agree-ments and contracts, business permits andrules, overview of trade agreements andpartnerships across the globe, the impor-tance of a business community in munici-palities from a social responsibilityperspective and understanding of tax andSouth African Reserve Bank regulations.
Zulu will participate in this importantdialogue in order to harmonise thebusiness relations in the local environ-ment.

THE 43 inmates who allege theywere tortured by warders in aBloemfontein prison are preparing tobring their claim before the BritishHigh Court.British law firm Leigh Day is
representing the prisoners andserved an urgent “letter of claim” tosecurity giant G4S’s headquarters inCrawley in the United Kingdom on12 February.G4S won a R15 billion, 25-year
contract in 2000 to build, run andmanage the Mangaung CorrectionalCentre (MCC).“The instructions we have received
from our clients attest to a culture ofabuse and fear that appears to havebeen endemic in the MCC for years,”Leigh Day’s letter to G4S reads.“Many allegations involve inmates
being taken to solitary cells wherethere are no cameras, stripped nakedand forced on to a metal bed, withwater thrown on them, before beingrepeatedly shocked with electricshields, including to the head andgenitals.“These incidents are alleged to
have been accompanied by brutalassaults, verbal abuse and in somecases serious racial abuse.”The firm is also acting for the
mother of a former inmate who diedin custody. In October 2013, the Wits Justice
Project revealed that the EmergencySecurity Team – warders armed withelectric shields and batons who arecalled to emergency situations –allegedly assaulted inmates routine-ly. Inmates, warders and othersources have claimed that thesecurity team would kick, punch andelectro-shock inmates with theirshields, after first dousing them with
water.Leaked video footage shot inside
the prison also revealed that aninmate – who had no record ofmental illness – was forcibly injec-ted, seemingly with antipsychoticdrugs.A total of 12 of Leigh Day’s clients
claim they were forcibly injected.Violence at the Mangaung prison
was exacerbated by G4S’s dismissalof about 330 warders in September2013 following a prolonged strike. The situation spiralled out of controland the Department of CorrectionalServices stepped in and took controlof the prison. In August, G4S washanded back control of the jail. Agovernment investigation into thealleged abuse has been finalised, butnot yet released. In November last year South
African attorney Egon Oswald, whois collaborating with the Britishlawyers, was denied access to theMangaung prison by correctionalservices. Oswald has clients in theprison who allege they were abusedwhile in the care of G4S, but he saysa department official told him he
could not consult with his clients. If the claim is successful, it will be
a landmark case for prisonersincarcerated with the biggestsecurity provider in the world.G4S runs eight prisons and several
immigration and juvenile detentioncentres. Its annual revenues are£7,4 billion (R132 billion). With 618 000 employees in 120
countries, it is the largest employerquoted on the London Stock Ex-change.Leigh Day has given the security
giant three months in which toprovide a response. If G4S – whichhas to date categorically deniedallegations of electro-shocking andforced medication – declines to settle, the case is expected to go to the HighCourt in London later this year.A G4S spokesperson said the
company, “insists on the higheststandards of care and we do nottolerate the mistreatment of prison-ers”.) Hopkins is a journalist with theWits Justice Project.) This story first appeared in CityPress on Sunday, 15 February.

My viewThemba VrymanSocial Activist
SOUTH AFRICA as a nation is not in anentirely bad state, but certainly not in agood state either.Since 1994 when the new political leaders
came into power, the state of our nationhas been that of “bietjie bietjie maak baie”.To date, many South African have been
wondering with a deep sense of concernwhy every president continues to deliver aState of the Nation Address that saysnothing of substance about the state of thecitizens in a free and democratic countrylike ours. Many, like me, who have been at great
pains to want to understand and simplifythe State of the Nation, have been left towonder with great concern that all thepresidents since 1994 have said things thatdo not reflect the reality of our nation.Every year a new theme is adopted; every
year there is great emphasis on the accele-ration of service delivery; every year thereis great emphasis on busting corruption;every year there is great emphasis on theimprovement of education; every year thereis great emphasis on increasing the numberof entrepreneurs; every year there is greatemphasis on reducing crime and abuse; andevery year since 1994 the words in theprepared script of the SONA are givenmore firepower in order to encouragepeople to continue holding on to hope. The president must know that some of
the same things can be said a lot of timeswith new words and vigour, but tocontinue saying the same things to thesame people will at some point meannothing at all.Perhaps, Mr President, now is the time
that you listen to the actual state of thenation through the mouths and experiencesof those representing the nation. The state of the nation since 1994 has
been that white people continue to live aprosperous life; the state of our nation hasbeen that black young people continue to bedrop-outs at school and having a very bleak
future indeed. The state of the nation, Mr President, is
that to some villagers in Libode in therural areas of the Eastern Cape, electricityis still a wild dream; in Jozini also, MrPresident, at a place called Hlalanathi themoon and the sun are the only lights peopleknow.Mr President, whose State of the Nation
Address is it anyway? When we stillcontinue to have farms called Kaffirfon-tein in Steynsrus? Surely, Mr President, the State of the Nation Address is notdirected at us when up to today wecontinue to have street kids roaming thestreets of Johannesburg and Welkomwithout any concerted effort from the stateto help them.We have heard from the Auditor-General,
Mr President, that over R60 billion isunaccounted for as a result of people inservice of the republic being unaccountable.Mr President, if the State of the Nation
Address was a true reflection of our livingconditions, we would never even bother todisturb you.But we are forced to disturb you, Mr
President, because we want to know whoseState of the Nation Address is it anywaythat you, Mr President, and all those whocame before you, reflect upon.Mr President, we believe that it is high
time that the State of the Nation Address istold as it is, including the issues of poverty, crime, no electricity, unemployed youths, corrupt black people, corrupt white people, companies that continue to see black people
as nothing but working tools, and servicedelivery that is of poor quality.Mr President, you are getting old and
many of the current national leadership areold too. At some point we will have to takepower as the rightful heirs of this God-gi-ven land. The work we will do, will give us the
opportunity to change our own livingconditions. We are going to show that your legacy –
and the legacy of those that came beforeyou – was nothing but a slow period ofdevelopment and empowerment.Because a lot of things, Mr President, are
going to drastically change for the better. We advise you that for now - because you
still have the opportunity, to leave the stateof the nation in a good way - we urge youto vigorously achieve that mission, in yourlifetime, of truly accelerating the efforts tochange the lives of the majority of citizensfor the better. Our patience, Mr President, has run out.We live every day seeking to change
this sad state of our nation and the timewill come when everyone has been mobil-ised.When that process has been completed,
we shall rise up to get back our power thatwe voluntarily gave to you and those whocame before you in every election since1994. Then the people’s power shall revertback to the rightful owners who are thepeople themselves. The people will determine their own
future, craft their own destiny and consoli-date their determination to truly achieve asociety of prosperity and better livingconditions. We shall ask again, Mr President, whose
State of the Nation Address is it anyway?) Send your contribution for thiscolumn, of no more than 500 words, [email protected], as wellas a head and shoulders shot of thewriter.

IF you look around you today, youyou will find a lot to leave youtroubled and discouraged; what yousee is poverty, failures, stagnation, limitations, unemployment, untime-ly death, et cetera. All these are produced by demons
whose intention it is to stop youfrom focusing on Jesus Christ.John 16:33“I have told you these things, so
that in me you may have peace. Inthis world you will have trouble. Buttake heart, I have overcome theworld. “Here Jesus says “I overcame the
world”. Jesus is simply agreeingthat it is true you will face troubleof all kinds, but He overcame all of
them just for you, meaning thateven if there are reasons to betroubled, there is in fact a Greaterreason not to be troubled. Now our focus should be on God
who overcame for us and not be onthe situations we find ourselves inand which are preventing us fromachieving our purpose in life.Further reading: Anah (1 Samuel

Living without myhusband for 15 years was not easy. I hadto support myself financially andconsulted top healers, who didn't help. Iheard of mama Asiha on the radio and on
television, my workmate he had helped with my financial problems. She told me everything that was happening in my life before I saidanything to her. She took out all thewitchcraft, showedme the 'mirrorin a dish of water'. I saw my husband's girlfriend . She prayed for mewith her special powers . My enemies confessed now and I'm alsonow promoted at work . I don't know how to thankmamaAsiha, but tomake it public. With her magic ring she can protect homes from badevils.

IN a press release by GGi Commu-nication, it is said that South Africahas a shortage of learners pursuingengineering at tertiary level. One reason is the stereotype that
boys are more suited to it.How are parents and teachers
silently reinforcing this stereotype? Most people grew up in homes
where the split of household choresdepended on gender. Girls cookedand cleaned, while the boys did the
hard work. There families that support their
daughters to choose the careersthey want. However, sometimesteachers undermine a child’s desireto be more. How many girls believe what
their teachers say and do not aspireto be more because, based onlocation, circumstance and gender, they are not encouraged? Childpsychologist Ashley Jay says this
happens more than we think.“Children often witness their
mothers coming home after workand doing what is often called the‘second shift’ of cooking, homeadministration and helping withhomework at night time,” says Jay.This may also serve to reinforce
gender stereotypes when themother’s daily work is not takeninto account, regardless of herprofession.
Stereotypes about girls still prevail

Stateof theNationAddressTHE 2015 State of the NationAddress (SONA15) definitely kickedthe parliamentary year off with abang. The SONA15 red carpet was
graced by the controversial Mand-la Mandela and his wife, the popu-lar TV show host Dali Tambo andhis wife, Rachel Tambo, as well asmusician Arthur Mafokate. Before the SONA could start,
there was chanting by the journal-ists and opposition members ofparliament in the national assem-bly chambers demanding that thespeaker “bring back the signal”.The Economic Freedom Fighters
(EFF) were forcibly removed fromthe national assembly chambers. The DA also left when the chair-
person of the National Council ofProvinces (NCOP), Thandi Modise, was unable to clarify whether themen in white shirts were membersof the SAPS.
HOLLOW victory. President Jacob Zuma continues to deliver his State of the NationAddress despite empty opposition benches. Members of the EFF were forcefully re-moved from the chambers, while DAmembers staged awalk-out after National Assem-bly speaker, BalekaMbete, failed to answer the question posed by theDAparliamentaryleader, Mmusi Maimane. THERE is no energy crisis inSouth Africa. This is according to the head
of the African Energy Indaba, who sees a positive wayforward in the energy sector.Brian Statham, chairperson
of the South African NationalEnergy Association and theAfrican Energy Indaba, toldFin24 at the indaba that Eskomhad to be allowed to get onwith its job.“I define a crisis as when
you’re in a state of turmoil,(when) you’re in absolute panicand you don’t have a clue whatto do about it,” Statham said.“In that sense, we’re not in a
crisis.
“We know what needs to bedone. What we need now isjust to get our ducks in a rowand focus on implementing thecorrection procedures andprocesses that need to be putin place.”He said it was dependent on
Eskom focusing on its core job,the entry of Integrated Develop-ment Plans (IDPs) into themarket, the success of therenewable programme and theimplementation of the inde-pendent power bids for thecoal-fire generation.“If those all move the way
we hope they will, then wewill see our way clear.”– Fin24.com

JUNIOR athletes from in and aroundBloemfontein were honoured lastWednesday (11/02) as the NedbankBloemfontein Achilles Junior RunningClub awarded them by handing overkits. The handover took place at the
Nedbank Bloemfontein Achilles RacingClub where six athletes receivedsupplements, shoes and brand-new kitsfor the season. The club was established in March
2014 to promote the development of theathletes. The mission is to groom and produce
the good athletes of tomorrow.Due to a lack of long- and short-
distance runners in Bloemfontein, theclub was established to give children aplatform to showcase their talents andto fill the gap.The club works hand in hand with
schools in the township to give chil-dren the opportunity to discover theirtalents. These schools include the Lereko
Secondary School, Hodisa TechnicalSchool, Tsholohelo Primary, AtangPrimary and Toka Primary wheretalented learners are identified. They furthermore cater for track,
field, cross-country and road running. The children are monitored, mentored
and trained by the club at the MangaungOutdoor Sports Centre and LerekoSecondary School.Coach David Molhiselwa gives training
in the week and Leonard Jingose onweekends. The two coaches primarily focus on
speed and endurance.“We encourage the children to not only
focus on athletics, but also education. They need proper structures and develop-ment and that is what we provide as aclub,” said Jingose. The ultimate vision of the club is to
send athletes to club nationals and to theNedbank elite athletes green team toparticipate for higher honours. In 2014 more than 30 of the club’s junior
athletes represented the Free State teamat the South African cross-countrychampionships in George.Three of the club’s athletes also compet-
ed at the South African half-marathonchampionships in Pretoria and anotherthree represented the club at the SouthAfrican school cross-country champion-ships in Pretoria while one juniorathlete competed at the South Africancountry trails.

THE Big Brothers Social Clubrecently decided to live out the idealsof former president Nelson Mandelaand help their fellow man by identify-ing a pre-school to assist withdonations. As part of the 67 minutes cam-
paign, inspired by the formerstatesman, the club identified theHug-a-bag Pre-school in Ehrlich Parkas the beneficiary of their goodwillproject.Through sponsorship and dona-
tions from several local businesspeople, as well as national retailers, the club donated tables, chairs, stationery, balloons, mattresses andgoody bags.According to Thabang Chalale, the
club’s chairman, the donations theyreceived to be able to reach out tothe crèche went beyond their wildestexpectations.“The response was overwhelming,
as the little we gathered was notexpected,” Chalale said.He said as a social club, it was the
first time they had attempted thisand that they wanted to extend ahand to other needy organisations orindividuals.“As a result we want to humbly
ask our local business people to lenda hand in the project. We willwelcome any type of donations.”The club can be contacted through

JUST because you do not see the effects ofan unhealthy lifestyle, unfortunately theconsequences will at some stage be knock-ing on your door.Invest in your heart and enjoy a longer,
healthy life. Heart disease remains one ofthe leading causes of death. Here are a few strategies to reduce your
chances of getting heart disease:
Stop smokingSmoking is to blame for 35% of deaths
due to heart disease. The use of tobaccomay cause blood clot formation andabnormal heart rhythms. The risks increas-es with the amount of cigarettes you smokeper day and low-tar cigarettes have thesame effect. Remember that any type ofexposure, even second-hand smoke, mayincrease your risk.
ExerciseBeing active will reduce your risk for
heart disease and increases HDL (the good)cholesterol. Physical activity can also aid inweight management, improve blood sugarlevel control and help reduce blood pres-sure. Elevated blood sugar levels may be anindication of pre-diabetes.
Eat a hand fullEnjoy a variety of at least five fruits and
vegetables each day. Try to include green
leafy vegetables as well as orange and redones. By eating fruits and vegetables youwill also increase your fibre intake. Fruitsand vegetables are low in fat and energy, and contain vitamins, minerals and antioxi-dants which keep your heart healthy.
Maintain a healthy weightBody mass index (BMI) and heart
diseases are related – the risk is greaterwith an increase in BMI. Aim to keep yourBMI below 25 (BMI = weight (kg)/height(m)²). Body shape and fat storelocation may also influence your risk forheart disease. Therefore a waist circumfer-ence of less than 88 cm in women and lessthan 102 cm in men is recommended. Evena slight weight loss of only 5%, may help toimprove cholesterol levels, blood pressureand blood sugar levels.
Get checked regularlyRegular screening of cholesterol and
blood sugar levels, as well as blood pres-sure, will allow you to manage your healthand therefore reduce your risk of gettingheart disease and keep you healthy forlonger.Remember – a healthy lifestyle is as
simple as making better choices. If it isabout nutrition, ask a dietician.) Marsy Greyling and AshleighFincham are fourth-year Dieteticsstudents at the University of the FreeState (UFS).

After 10 years of struggling, my husband isback at home after mama Linda showed memy enemies in a mirror . We are now ahappy, married couple - thank you, mamaLinda.
My husband stayed with his girlfriend for 10years. Without him I struggled to supportmyself and could not even pay ourchildren's school fees.
I visited traditional healers, but with no help. Then I heard of Maria Lindaon a radio talk show and my neighbour whom he helped and rescuedfrom black magic. I visited mama Linda and paid R200. He told me aboutmy future andmymarriage problems. He put amirror in a dishwithwaterand I saw the facesofmyenemies andmyhusband's girlfriend. He prayed for me and gave me holy water and oil to wash myself. Aftertwo days I saw results, my enemies confessed their wrong doingstowards me andmy husband left his girlfriend and come back home. I'mnowhappyafter visitingmamaLinda .

HE MADE MY BUSINESS TO GROW AND MYFINANCE TO BE CONTROLLED:
I have my own business for 15 years doing well andmaking a lot of savings, but things began turning badand started registering losses. My life began to fall apart, the banks were after my properties for the loans I hadfailed to pay. My wife and children left as I could nolonger take care of them. I visitedmany healers, but withno positive results. I heard of MR JACOB who hadhelped so many people, I visited him to read my pastand future - he charged me R150. I was shocked to find
out that my nephew was doing the black magic on me. JACOB cleansedme and a month later I began to see progress in my business with lots ofsavings. Am now happy with my family which had left me because Icouldn't support themanymore.
THANKS TO MR JACOB who saved my life.

AB DE VILLIERS has praisedthe character and fight of theCastle Lager Proteas’ middleorder in getting his team overthe line in their opening ICCCricket World Cup matchagainst Zimbabwe at SeddonPark on Sunday (15/02).The record unbeaten 256-run
fifth wicket partnershipbetween David Miller (138 notout) and JP Duminy (115 notout) laid the foundation for theProteas’ opening victory of thetournament, and was a timelyconfidence boost for the middleorder after a rare top-orderfailure.“It was very pleasing to
sit on the side and watch that,”De Villiers said after thematch.“We were talking about 240
to 250 at one stage, and endedup getting that.I don’t know how we did it,
but it was an incredibleperformance by the two ofthem.“David got a sniff in the
40th over, and went to it fromthere.“We’ve seen him demolish
attacks before and that’s whathe’s capable of.“To see that, at the highest
level in the biggest tourna-ment you can get, is great. Itshows you where this guy is(Miller) going with his cricketcareer.
“To get JP in good form aswell – he’s been a little bit outof touch with injuries – to seehim bat like that is verypleasing.”De Villiers was equally
impressed with the tenacityshown by Zimbabwe, andtipped them to upset a bignation further on in thetournament.“I’m very happy with the
performance,” De Villiers saidof his team.“You’ve got to give credit to
Zimbabwe, they played a reallygood game today.“No doubt that the wicket
played a big part in themgetting ahead early on. It was areally difficult wicket to bat onin the first 20 overs.“The wicket got a little
easier in our innings andDavid and JP made full use ofthat.“They played exceptionally
well with a great partnershipthat won us the game today.I’m very, very satisfied withour first win.“These guys (Zimbabwe) can
play some cricket.“Like I said before, they beat
Australia not long ago, and Iwon’t be surprised if theyupset a couple of teams in thisWorld Cup.”The squad has been given
two days off and will begintheir preparations for theirsecond match against India inMelbourne today (18/02).
