MOTHERWELL residents fromWards 57 and 54 who say theyare sick and tired of waiting forhouses and are accusing somemunicipal officials of corrup-

tion are taking matters into their own hands asthey don’t believe that the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality will ever deal with their housingneeds.

Last Thursday evening a group of angry resi-dents from Power line and NU29 went on therampage and looted about three foreign resi-dents’ shops before setting them alight.

According to Motherwell Community PoliceForum (CPF) Chairperson Nomawethu Jama,before that, theresidentsallegedlyburntaShop-rite delivery truck as well as a petrol truck,burnt tyres and closed roads including one toUitenhage, stopped children from going toschool and illegally occupied the flats ear-marked for deserving residents on the housingdelivery list.

“Yes we did. We take responsibility for thepublic violence. It is our way of calling for mu-nicipal attention. We have been calling the exec-utive mayor Danny Jordaan to come and listento our complaints and he ignored us,” said resi-dent Vulikhaya Pasiya. Continued on page 2

RECENT events at the Letitia BamHospital in KwaNobuhle suggestthat we are sitting on a time bombthat could explode at any time.

So says Uitenhage Sub District Bhealth general secretary ThembisileNogampula.

He said recent demands by alleg-edly drunk people to be treated be-fore patients queueing for medicalattention since the early morning,were the last straw in a number ofincidents that showed a lack of un-derstanding, respect and protocolfrom local residents.

“Members of the community com-plain of service delivery, but whentheyarebeingassistedtheyshowun-ruly behaviour. It is wrong and can-not be accepted,” Nogampula said.

Anexecutivememberof theTreat-ment Action Campaign, Nogampulasaid they were opposed to such mis-demeanours in the same way thatthey dreaded government officialswho displayed laziness and an un-caringattitudebydraggingtheir feetatworkinsteadofgivingpeoplegoodservice in the spirit of Batho Pele(People First).

He said a stakeholders’ forumwhich inclu-ded ward committeemembers, community development

workers, theTreatmentActionCam-paign and Amadodana Okwenene,among others, had been held lastweek to discuss problems bedevil-ling the local clinic.

Nogampula said the police andcommunity police forum membershad not been able to make it owingto other commitments.

He said a public meeting was heldat the Jeff Masemola CommunityHall in KwaNobuhle last Thursdayto discuss issues relating to resi-dents’ expectations of the public hos-pital.

“We discussed a number of issues,including educating our peopleabout health problems. The role of

the X-ray and trauma units in thehospital were also be under the spot-light.

“The bottom line is that we wantresidents to appreciate the good thatgovernment is doing on one hand,and ensure that they get quality ser-vices for a better life on the otherhand,” Nogampula said, adding thathis structure had been created by,and was accountable to, Health MECPhumza Dyantyi.

It was not politically aligned, hesaid, but played an oversight roleand had a good rapport with council-lors Thembisile Gana, Nomsa Man-ci,MondeVaaltynandLoyisoSteme-le.

THE UDM say they are in negotia-tions with hundreds of ANC mem-bers to walk over to the UDM as theparty gears up for the local generalelections next year.

In a press conference to welcomeveteran ANC ward 30 leader Mich-ael Ciko to the UDM, MongameliBobani said they were expectingover a thousand members, with90% of those from the ANC, to walkover to the UDM before the monthended as negotiations were beingconducted.

Bobani said the ANC memberswere mo-ving to the UDM owing to

the conditions they had endured inthe ANC.

“We are expecting thousands tomove to the UDM in no time andthey want a change just like Ciko.Over 90% of the members will bemoving from the ANC, some fromthe DA. This Heritage Month willbe a month for the UDM. It will bea nice heritage for the UDM. By theend of Heritage Month we will havewelcomed the thousands we talkabout,” said Bobani.

Bobani said he could not namenames, but said some of the mem-bers would be part of the big fishof the local ANC.

Ciko, who said he was neglectedby the ANC, had been a member of

the ANC for over 25 years havingserved as a marshal in his youth,and a deputy secretary of ward 30branch under councillor AndileMfunda and late councillor MikeTofile.

DA leader Retief Odendaal saidthey also had hundreds of politicalmembers moving to the DA andthey were not concerned with thenumbers emphasised by the UDM.

“Its politics and we are nearingelections. On a monthly basis hun-dreds are walking over to the DAand that is not necessarily news-worthy. I would be very surprisedif members walk over to the UDMbecause members are well awarethat we will be taking over the met-

ro.“The UDM is a minority with less

than 7%. In the specific by-elec-tions the UDM showed the ANCthat people are tired of being takenfor granted and people voted forthat. I doubt whether they will re-

peat that performance next year,”said Odendaal.

THERE are two things that PoliceCommissioner Riah Phiyega saysher department is clear about - theneed to curb the continuous killingof police and the escalating gang vi-olence in the northern areas of PortElizabeth.

Festival last Friday, Phiyega saidthey would do anything to secure asafe environment for their law en-forcement officers.

“The killing of police is a hugeproblem. This is our major con-cern. We urge members of the com-munity to report these incidentsand ensure that perpetrators are ar-rested,” Phiyega said.

The provinces with the most po-lice killings were Gauteng, theWestern Cape and KwaZulu-Natalin that order, she said, adding that

16 policemen had lost their lives inthe line of duty in Gauteng since thebeginning of the year.

Eastern Cape Police Commission-er Lieutenant General Celiwe Bintasaid there had been two police kill-ings in the province since April thisyear, one in Fort Beaufort in fulluniform and the other in MountFletcher. The suspects in both caseshad met the full might of the law.

“Gangsterism in parts of PortElizabeth’s northern areas like Gel-vandale has always been a persist-

ent problem,” Phiyega said.“We have seen many deaths as a

result of gang violence and haveused many interventions.”

She said high police visibilitywas one strategy and the NationalProsecuting Authority had alsoplayed ball by ensuring stiff senten-ces were meted out.

Because gangsterism was a multi-dimensional problem, they urgedmembers of the community to as-sist the police, she said.

“Our strength is in our unity.”

Municipal spokesperson Mthub-anzi Mniki said illegal occupation ofhouses was unacceptable.

He said they were investigatinghousing waiting lists to identifyproblems and would soon put up areconciled, complete and transpar-ent list which would state clearlywhere people were on the waitinglist.

“We’d also like to state that not allproblems are addressed by the exec-utive mayor personally. He delegatesand decisions taken by the delegatedofficial represented the views of themunicipal council,” said Mniki.

He added, “We cannot accept thecriminal activities taking place inthe area. We urge police to take ac-tion when residents choose to mis-take service delivery issues withcrime.”

RETIRED nurses of Motherwell have cometogether to form a structure that would helpthem participate effectively in communitydevelopment initiatives.

The launch of the Motherwell RetiredNurses Organisation (MORENO) at the Ray-mond Mhlaba Sports Centre in NU4 Mother-well, was the beginning of a new journey forthe practitioners who were no longer on theHealth Department payroll, but still much in-volved in health matters which affect localcommunities.

The launch was attended by MORENOmembers and their families, representativesfrom other retired nurses organisations,Democratic Nurses Organisations of SouthAfrica (DENOSA) leadership, speakers fromthe Department of Social Development andinvited guests.

The event was the culmination of a long

time of planning by the nurses.MORENO Chairperson Nompumelelo

Njezula introduced her executive committeeand said that they decided to work togetheras retired nurses because, she explained, “tobe retired, didn’t mean they were tired”.

“We plan to work together as we are agingin different ways but still have the passionfor our work - of health promotion.

“We’ll look at ways in which we’ll supportour communities’ needs while we’re provid-ing care and support for one another physi-cally and spiritually,” said Njezula.

She said they found out that there are oth-er retired nurses organisations that theywould be working with and sharing ideas.

Reverend Zwelitsha Lalendle summed itup reading from the book of Matthew 5:13and said in the opening prayer that MO-RENO represented the light and salt of theworld.

“As you are retired, you are rehired foryour new roles,” he quipped.

THE 23rd Police Music and Cultural Asso-ciation (Polmusca) Unity Festival held atthe Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium andNMMU’s Missionvale campus from Sep-tember 17 to 19 was a resounding success.

The prestige event, a huge exposition ofdiverse South African cultures that includ-ed choral music, bands, traditional andballroom dance, cultural exhibitions andpotjiekos was aimed at relieving stressamong South Africa’s men and women inblue whose everyday job was associatedwith danger and even death, national Po-lice Commissioner Riah Phiyega said.

In the choral competition, KwaZulu-Na-tal took first prize, followed by the SAPS

head office, while last year’s overall win-ners, the Eastern Cape, took third position.

Mpumalanga won the battle of the bandsfollowed by the head office and the North-ern Cape came third.

The Northern Cape came tops in the ball-room dance stakes, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and Free State.

North West Province took the honours inthe traditional dance category, with theEastern Cape second and Northern Capethird.

In the potjiekos competition, the judgesagreed nobody does it better than the East-ern Cape. The Western Cape came secondfollowed by the Free State.

Hundreds of policemen and policewo-men enjoyed their stay in Nelson MandelaBay. For three days they mingled with the

powers that be, including Phiyega, and for-got about the hustle and bustle associatedwith their job of law enforcement.

And no serious crimes were reportedaround Nelson Mandela Bay, local policespokespersons Warrant Officer DumileGwavu and Constable Mncedi Mbombosaid.

This proved true the assertion by Phiye-ga that “Polmusca is used to support crimeprevention initiatives by calming down in-flamed unrest within communities and al-so providing recreation andpleasure to ourworkforce.”

Both police labour unions, the South Af-rican Police Union and the Police and Pris-ons Civil Rights Union support Polmusca,saying the health and welfare of the menand women in blue is paramount.

UP and coming young artists from Mother-well will have an opportunity to showcasetheir talents during the Balo M FoundationHeritage Day Celebration at the NU2Mother-well Community Hall today.

Activities will run from noon until 5pm.Lubabalo Mseleni, head and founder of the

foundation, said the event was his means ofgetting a number of gifted township young-sters under one roof in an event where theycelebrated their heritage and diversitythrough arts by showcasing their music,dance, drama, poetry, rap and traditionalfood cooking talents.He said there would also be food stalls with

traditional African cuisine for sale.

In an effort to address this, the Phendula Lit-eratureQuiz, otherwiseknownasLitQuiz,washeld last Wednesday at the NU9 public libraryin Motherwell.Five primary schools, Emafini, Zanoxolo,

Fumis’ukoma, Sanctor and Swartkops, took

part in the quiz after reading the five booksfrom which the questions came.St George’s Prep librarian Rosemary Roth

said this was a national quiz aimed at encour-aging pupils to read.It was started by Johannesburg librarian

Marge Brown, who noted the problem of notenough reading being done in schools.Brown organises sponsored books and sends

them to the provinces involved, including theEastern Cape.“As a lover of reading myself, I encouraged

someof theschools to takepart, andas theysay,

the rest is history,” said Roth.RothsaidPortElizabeth’sprivilegedschools,

meaning those schools with library facilities,assisted those without libraries by offeringthem books to read.She said a Motherwell NU9 librarian, Mari-

ABOUT 30 pupils of theWabamkela Edu-care in Walmer Township visited theTreasure Island play centre this weekwhere they had the opportunity to expe-rience a snake show by Silvano Recchia,also known as the Snake Man.

Recchia has been breeding withsnakes for the past eighteen years.“Snake breeding is my hobby and my

love for snakes developed from a veryyoung age,” said Recchia.He, like most people, were also afraid

of snakes at first, but the more time hespent with snakes, the more he becameat ease with the reptiles.As the snake man took Shikana the al-

bino Burmese python out, the little faceshad mixed emotions. Some were curi-ous, while others decided to avoid eyecontact with the snake.Juliet Watt, manager of Wabamkela,

said that this outing meant a lot to thechildren.“This outing allows them to see more

than just the streets of the township, andit aims to educate the children aroundthe nurturing of pets.”

According to YTC Coach MongeziCwilana, the fundamentalaimof theirprogramme is to develop the game ofrugby among girls from 14 years to 18years old.Cwilana said, “At YTC we aim to

prepare these young girls to play atprovincial and national level. So farwe have three sub-unions which areKaroo, Midlands Sedru and NelsonMandela Bay.“For starters each sub-union is re-

quired to have two teams, which areU/16 and U/18. Since the inception ofthis programme last year, I can seethat there is a huge improvement inthe skills levels of girls.”Cwilana said that their U/16 teams
