You are the Best of the Best Lots of people work, but only a few can run a business. Sure, you have plenty of competition, but how many

of your competitors are here learning how to make their businesses better, safer and more profitable? How many

are investing in their businesses, buying the best equipment, adding new services, and finding ways to be the

best they can be?

Well, those of you who are here have already separated yourself from the average competitor. You are the

best of the best. The Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo has always attracted the best. For 33 years, the best

manufacturers have displayed the best equipment. The best educational program is presented to enhance your

knowledge of your business and the industry as a whole. Together, they will all help you take your business to

the next level.

Sure, the other guy may have some equipment and a basic understanding of how to use it, but the best find

new equipment that helps them diagnose problems their customers need fixed. The best learn ways to offer services

that will do a better job for their customers and allow for a fair profit. The best learn that the old ways of doing

business just won’t work in the future. You see, something as simple as the Yellow Pages will no longer be the

way potential customers connect with you.

The future of this industry is in the hands of the best. You shape what happens because you adapt to changes

and improve your services while others find the only way of competing is price. The more they rely on being the

cheapest, the sooner they will be looking for another job. Those who survive will be the best, people like you who

are smart enough to invest in their businesses and in themselves. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation —

in the hall, at the hotels, the restaurants and the bars. Meet with people from all over the U.S., Canada and the

49 other countries represented who not only understand your business but are also among the industry’s best.

COLE Publishing has always used the annual Expo to show our appreciation for the work you do, day in

and day out. Though often overlooked by others, we understand what you do is vital to the individuals and

communities you serve.

Don’t miss the Industry Appreciation Party on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.

Enjoy yourself. You are the best and you deserve it.

2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 8

The 2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo Internation-al has finally arrived, and we’re back in Indianapolis with new exhibitors, new products and technology, and more education and networking opportunities than ever.

“This show is your place to learn and grow, but it is also a great time to laugh, relax and enjoy the people in your in-dustry,” says Bob Kendall, co-founder of COLE Publishing and president of COLE, Inc. “Take advantage of everything the show offers. See the best of the industry and take advantage of show specials. Learn from the educational sessions as well as the thousands of industry professionals like you who attend. Most importantly, enjoy yourself and this well-deserved time away.”

Education Day opens the show as always, providing an opportunity to acquire the strategies and technical know-how to push your business or utility forward. Educational seminars are also slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Roundtable Breakfast and Discussion will be held Thursday morning.

Of course, it’s not all about the classroom. It’s really the massive display of tools, trucks and technology that steals the show. The Pumper & Cleaner Expo is the only place you can meet all the major manufacturers, kick the tires on the latest equipment, and network with the people who know this industry best. The exhibit hall is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

“There’s no better place to network with others who un-derstand your business,” Kendall says. “The free exchange of knowledge and experience is priceless. There’s no better place to learn how to become more profitable.”

Wednesday will be highlighted by the Expo’s first-ever Demo Day. Product demonstrations will be held outside Exhibit Hall I on Senate Avenue at the south end of the Convention Center. Five companies will spend one hour each showcasing their equipment, followed by Q-and-A sessions with company repre-sentatives.

Indy also has plenty to offer away from the Expo hall, includ-ing a wide range of museums, entertainment venues and shop-ping opportunities, and there are hundreds of restaurants within a short walking distance of the Convention Center. Find your favorite spot to meet up with clients, colleagues and friends, and find out what Indy’s “Hoosier Hospitality” is all about.

While you’re planning your week, be sure to keep Tuesday night open for the Industry Appreciation Party and Craig Mor-gan concert at the JW Marriott Hotel, connected to the Conven-tion Center. The party – and 25-cent tap beer – starts at 5 p.m., and Craig Morgan will take the stage at 7 p.m. It promises to be a great night.

In fact, the Expo promises four great days and countless ways to improve your operations during the other 361 days of the year. You’ll walk away from the Expo with a better perspective on your business and the industry as a whole.

Enjoy your time in Indy, and thanks for attending the Expo.

Education is the foundation for all progress, and there’s no place to build a stronger foundation than here at Education Day at the 2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo. This year’s Expo features one of the most expansive lineups of educational opportunities in the event’s 33-year history.

Tracks of seminars, which have grown greatly in scope and attendance over the years, are sponsored by a variety of pro-fessional organizations, including the National Association of Sewer Service Companies, WaterJet Technology Association and National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association. The full day of seminars includes many opportunities for cleaning, pumping and municipal professionals to earn continuing education credits toward state certification.

The following days will feature a variety of additional seminars covering a wide range of topics, from professional techniques in the field to efficiencies gained through remote monitoring.

All of the education seminars, including a lineup of sessions presented in Spanish, will be held in the meeting rooms adjacent to the Expo exhibit hall. A complete listing of Education Day classes follows, and you can also jump onto www.pumpershow.com for more information on seminar times, locations and speakers throughout the week. The learning opportunities continue on Thursday with the Roundtable Discussion and Breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. in the main concession area in the exhibit hall. It’s a great way to kick off your final day at the show and to talk to your peers about the most pressing issues facing your industry. There’s a lot of knowledge and insight to be gained, and your business or utility is sure to benefit.

In a state that’s home to more than 50 breweries, no frosty mug will go unfilled. Many of those breweries — more than a dozen — are housed in the greater Indianapolis area.

“Craft beer in Indianapolis has been a part of our city’s culture for over 20 years,” says Clayton Robinson, owner of Sun King Brewing Co. “Over the last four years, there has been an explosion of breweries and interest in craft beer. Indiana led the 2012 Great American Beer Festival with the greatest percent-age of medals to entries, so there is plenty of world-class beer to discover and enjoy.”

Sun King is among the largest breweries in the state, mak-ing handcrafted seasonal and specialty beers. Its house beers include Sunlight Cream Ale, Wee Mac Scottish Ale and Osiris Pale Ale. Its brews were among those honored at the Great American Beer Festival, as well as the Indiana Brewers Cup and World Beer Cup competitions. While tours and tastings are only offered at the end of each week, the brewery is open for retail sales all week. 135 N. College Ave.; 317/602-3702; www.sunkingbrewing.com.

With so much malt and hops abounding, it makes sense that another city attraction aims to connect the thirsty masses with these beer venues. The bright green Indy Brew Bus, which can host 14 riders, offers a three-hour tour ($30 per person) of three to four local breweries. Samples of house, seasonal and specialty beers are provided at each stop. And a personal sampling scorecard lets you and your friends (ages 21 or older, of course) rate your favorites.

Megan Bulla, who owns the tour bus with her husband, Andy, says they started the business because a number of craft breweries were starting up in Indianapolis and there was not an easy, safe way to visit them all. “We allow people the opportunity to taste great local beer and something that is uniquely Indianapolis,” she says.

In addition to Sun King, three other breweries are part of the tour, with about 45-minute stops at each. While the Brew Bus

has limited tours during the Pumper & Cleaner Expo (more info at www.indybrewbus.com), all but the Bier Brewery and Tap-room are located either a long walk or a short cab ride from the Indiana Convention Center.

Flat 12 Bierworks is a craft production brewery in the his-toric Holy Cross neighborhood. Sample their beers with most interesting names (Mustache Ride Red, Lacto-Matic Milk Stout, Upside Down Blonde and Liquid Fiction). 414 N. Dorman St.; 317/635-2337; http://flat12.me.

Fountain Square Brewing Co. is located in the historic Fountain Square neighborhood. It started in 2011, born of the perfect storm of chemistry, microbiology, automation and a good old-fashioned love of the brew. Among their beers are Hop for Teacher, Backyard Porter, Preacher’s Daughter Amber Ale and Workingman’s Pilsner. 1301 Barth Ave.; 317/493-1410; www.fountainsquarebrewery.com.

Bier Brewery and Taproom won the Indiana State Fair Cham-pion Brewery Award in 2011 and 2012. One of the brewery’s slogans is “come taste our awesomeness.” Brews change fre-quently, and, like most microbreweries, the names don’t disap-point, including Dirty Farmgal, Oranjunkle, Sanitarium, Wee Fatty and Billy Baroo. 5133 E. 65th St.; 317/253-2437; www.bierbrewery.com.

2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 20

The COLE Publishing editorial staff is in the building and looking forward to meeting you. Throughout the run of the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, we will be at your disposal to answer questions, learn about your busi-ness, and discuss story ideas.

Ted Rulseh, editor of Treatment Plant Operator (TPO) and Water System Operator (WSO); Jim Kneiszel, editor of Pumper, Portable Restroom Operator (PRO) and Onsite Installer; Luke Laggis, editor of Cleaner, Municipal Sewer & Water (MSW) and Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor (GOMC); and Briana Jones, COLE’s digital editor, will be in the class-rooms, on the floor and stationed at the COLE Publishing editors’ booth next to registration outside the main exhibit hall doors. Please stop by and share your opinions and concerns on the issues your industry is facing.

It’s easy to connect with us. You can flag us down on the Expo floor or visit the editors’ booth. In addition, you can reach any of us by cellphone at the numbers provided below.

As an added bonus, if you stop by the editors’ booth, we’ll enter you in a daily drawing for two free passes and a two-night hotel stay for next year’s Expo. You can also get a photo and press release with your own company information to send to your local publications. It’s a quick, free and easy way to let your customers know you’re doing what it takes to stay on top of the latest industry trends and technology.

We look forward to meeting you. Enjoy the show.

There’s a lot to see and do at the Pumper & Cleaner Envi-ronmental Expo but it’s not always easy to get it all in. To make it easier on attendees, COLE videographer Paul Thompson and I explore the show, compiling video footage for the Expo website. The videos are all in one spot, so you can check out all the happenings (and make sure you don’t miss anything) at www.pumpershow.com.

We start with a video introducing this year’s show and venue, and then get right into Education Day. We interview the seminar leaders and the folks who take the classes. So be ready; we might be waiting outside your seminar to get your opinion on the class you attended.

Videos also include interviews with exhibitors on the floor. Exhibitor staff members explain new products they are intro-ducing at the Expo, along with how the products work and how they benefit the customer. These products include drain cleaning solutions, inspection cameras, vacuum trucks, septic tanks and a whole lot more. Keep an eye on the website; we might feature an item you can’t miss.

We also feature other events at the Expo, including the Roundtable Discussion and Breakfast, which takes place from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. We interview visitors about what they learned at the breakfast discussion and how it will impact the way they run their businesses, so you can learn from them even if you weren’t able to attend.

If you see us walking around the show floor, stop us and tell us about your Expo experience.

The NOWRA National Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe begins tomorrow, and backhoe operators from across the country will be competing to be crowned the best of the best.

The winner takes home bragging rights with a picture of him/herself wearing the NOWRA Roe-D-Hoe belt, as well as a “champion” belt buckle and $1,000 cash – all for a $5 entry fee.

Keep on trying In years past, several techniques have been used to trim down the times. It is not uncommon to see low-time competitors from earlier in the day or even previous years hanging around the arena talking with other operators and event volunteers, looking for ideas and comparing strategies.

Some are hoping to calm those tense muscles before they climb on the machine. A few are mustering the nerve to compete in the national Open Division for the chance to take home the $1,000 prize. And still others who have already turned in Top 5 qualifying times come by from time to time to be sure they haven’t been knocked out of a trip to the finals.

Many times those who have slipped to sixth place are welcomed back to take another run through the games and try to get back into the Top 5.

Bigger and better The competition runs Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the exhibit hall, where the Open Division entrants aim to finish in the Top 5. The finals will be Thursday at 10 a.m. There the Top 5 Open Division operators will compete to decide who goes up against the winner of the State Champion Division (all NOWRA-sanctioned state champions receive an automatic entry in the finals).

This is an event loaded with fun for all, from the competitors to the spectators and even the event volunteers, who are quick to comment on just about anything in or around the event.

The 2013 competition promises to be even bigger than 2012. Competition will likely be tougher with more competi-tors and more state champions. To get a better sense of what’s involved in the Roe-D-Hoe, visit www.youtube.com/user/NOWRAVIDEO, or stop by and check out the competition.

The event is open to everyone. There is a $5 fee and contestants can compete as often as they like on Tuesday and Wednesday to perfect their plan of attack.

Tom Fritts is president of NOWRA. This article originally appeared in Onsite Installer.

TEST YOUR SKILLSNational Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe at the Pumper & Cleaner Expo promises tough competition and fun times for everyone By Tom Fritts

Get Your State Involved Last year, NOWRA sanctioned five state Roe-D-Hoe

events, and you can have one in your state, as well. Any

state that would like to hold a Roe-D-Hoe at its annual con-

ference may contact NOWRA and get the ball rolling.

NOWRA will work to locate an electric machine that

can be used inside the exhibit hall. We will also provide

the official rules booklet, release forms, equipment for the

games, a computer program to track the leader board,

and advice on how to make the event a success.

For those who would like a turnkey Roe-D-Hoe, we’ll

provide all this along with a representative and master of

ceremonies to give the event the look of professional show-

manship. Contact NOWRA at 800/966-2942.
