This year an unprecedented number of local, national and international organisations are travelling to Plymouth to meet you! They’re here to talk to as many students and graduates as possible and pass on their knowledge and experience of careers in the teaching sector.

THIS YEAR’S FAIR IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO:• Get ideas and information on what you can do with your degree.

• Meet over 35 employers, who will be recruiting for graduate vacancies and/or training.

• Meet different types of recruiters face-to-face, find out what type of individual they are looking to recruit and the criteria you may need to meet. Gain information and advice that may not be available on their website.

• Find out about options after graduation e.g. jobs, postgraduate study or time-out opportunities.

• Pick up information, tips and feedback from our Careers & Employability team in the Careers & Employability Hub.

Make sure you read through this brochure which includes the programme for the day. This includes drop-in workshops and careers appointments in the Careers & Employability Hub, plus plenty of employer talks over the day. How about attending one of our workshops in the weeks before the fairs where you can learn how to approach an employer and what kind of questions you should be asking.

The answer to all of these is yes! Regardless of where you are with your career planning, coming to the fair means you can find out about routes from people already working in education and ask advice on being successful in job searching, applications and interviews.

HOW DO I PREPAREFOR THE FAIR?

Research the organisations who are attending by visiting their websites and see if they have a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn page you can follow. This will help you to ask appropriate questions on the day.

Prepare the questions that you want to ask, so that you don’t end up wandering around the stands only picking up freebies. Aim to be remembered as the person who asked interesting and engaging questions!

Think outside the box. Don’t just consider the obvious options, the more open minded you are, the more opportunities you will discover.

• Consider the type of work that interests you as well as your skills and experience to date. Employers may ask what you want out of a placement or graduate job and what you could bring to a role.

• Know your digital footprint! What do you find when you Google your name? Are you happy for employers to see your Facebook photos? Are your tweets appropriate? Is your LinkedIn profile current and professional? Employers increasingly check candidates’ online presence so it is good to be confident in yours!

HOW DO I MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON THE DAY?

Although fairs are less formal than interviews, the organisations will still be on the lookout for potential candidates. Last year one of the local authorities was offering interviews to the students who impressed them on the day:

• Dress smartly; you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

• Take copies of a CV which you can leave with exhibitors. This will show you are professional and prepared. Make sure it’s a good one by visiting our drop-ins or workshops first.

• Take a notepad to write notes as you talk to exhibitors. After an hour of different conversations it’s sometimes difficult to remember the points they made, the resources they recommended and who invited you to make contact afterwards.

• If someone gives you their business card and invites you to call them for a further meeting, follow it up! It may open doors to work experience or mentoring. If you’re not sure how to approach them after the fair, pop in and talk to our team in the Careers & Employability Hub.

WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK?

Your questions should depend on whether you’ve started a teaching qualification or if you’re just considering teaching as a career at this point. Also how much research have you done and what do you want to get out of your discussion with them. Everyone’s questions will therefore be different but here are a few examples to get you started:

• What experience would make an application stand out?

• What particular skills are you looking for?

• Does your organisation offer work experience or shadowing opportunities?

• What kind of work experience is valued in an application?

• What is your normal selection process? How many stages are there? (Such as assessment centres, interviews, tests)

• What training opportunities do you provide?

The Chiltern Teaching School Alliance comprises a collaborative group of schools based around Denbigh High School in Luton. We recruit teachers centrally for both primary and secondary schools in the Alliance, which is based in Luton but also includes schools in Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. The Cornwall SCITT Partnership offers a one-year full time course leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is a forty-week course, which runs from early September through to the end of July each year. The course covers the age range 3 to 11 years (Route 1: 3 – 7 & Route 2: 5 –11) and complies with the requirements as specified in the Teachers’ Standards. It is largely school-based, with additional course content being delivered at SCITT HQ. The structure of the course links theory and training, with practice in school. Following training at SCITT HQ, trainees are given tasks to carry out during their time in school to support their teaching and learning. Training in school progresses from observing and working alongside an experienced teacher, to taking full responsibility for pupil’s learning, in the first instance with groups moving quickly to the whole class.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is an official Japanese Government scheme aiming at improving foreign language teaching in schools and promoting international understanding. The programme was established in 1987, with 848 participants from four countries. Since then, the number of participants has increased significantly. In 2013, the Programme welcomed 4,372 participants from 40 countries. Since the beginning of the JET Programme, there have been more than 60,000 participants from 63 countries around the world There are 2 positions available for UK graduates on the JET Programme: Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) and Coordinator for International Relations (CIR). For ALTs, knowledge of Japanese or previous teaching experience is not required. We welcome applicants from all degree subjects.

In Greater London there are over 250 Church of England schools. The Diocese of London plays a vital part in educating around 45,000 children from all backgrounds and traditions. The NASUWT (National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers) is the largest teachers’ union in the UK and the only TUC-affiliated teachers’ union to represent teachers in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
