2013 PIONEER DAYS QUEEN Anita Pardini welcomes you to Kitti-tas County in grand style. Anita is wearing the bonnet she made for thevery first Pioneer Days Parade back in the 1960s.
Welcome to Kittitas County. My name is Anita Pardini and I’velived in Cle Elum all my life. I’ve seen a lot of change over my96 years. There are many sights to take in: Teanaway River Val-ley, Lake Cle Elum, and the Telephone and Carpenter Housemuseums in Cle Elum, Roslyn’s NWI Company, the city mu-seum and the sites where the TV show Northern Exposurewas filmed. In Cle Elum we have Pioneers Day weekend witha parade and a breakfast at Fireman’s Park. There’s the Her-itage Festival in Ronald, the High Country Logging Show andthe Coal Miners Festival in Roslyn. We have many lakes in theupper county and plenty of places to hike and bike. I hopeyou enjoy your visit.

With the installation of the first barn quilt block on thegable end of the Old Dominion Barn at Dusty’s Nursery inEllensburg on Oct. 3, 2012, Washington became the 34thstate in the country to join the national barn quilt move-ment. A short six months later, Barn Quilts of Kittitas County(BQKC) lays claim to 40-plus painted-wood quilt blocks onold and new barns, as well as other historic buildings.
“We’re ‘all about’ bringing attention to our county andstate’s rich agricultural history,” said BQKC President, JackyFausset. “Barn owners are asking us for barn quilts to sym-bolize the pride they have in their farms, along with their in-volvement in raising a particular crop like hay or wheat –horses or cattle. Others choose to honor the history of theirfamily. They often choose a quilt pattern based on an oldfamily quilt. Those are some of my personal favorites – theyhave so much meaning and significance.”
Success warrants celebration and BQKC did so in styleduring the last weekend in April 2013. “With the help of our
sponsors, barn owners and volunteers,”said Fausset, “we achieved the first stepof our vision in a remarkable sixmonths.” BQKC commemorated the oc-casion on April 27-28, 2013, at the Kit-titas County Fairgrounds. The weekenddedication of the quilt trail included anexhibit of over 250 quilts representingWashington state quilters, a showcaseof vintage farm equipment, the KittitasCounty Farmer’s Market season open-ing, and a ‘kick up your heels’ Saturday night barn dance.“The local turnout for all events was really heart-warming,”said Fausset. “And I was amazed at how many people at-tended from around the Northwest.”
But then again, Fausset says, she isn’t really surprised.“Whenever and wherever a quilt trail has gone up locals seeinterest double and quadruple from year to year,” she said.“We’re looking forward to the same occurring here.”
With an estimated 400 – 500 barns throughout the county, along with all the historic buildings and sites, it’s easy to un-derstand why Kittitas County is the ideal epicenter for thisstate’s barn quilt movement. “We might not get a barn quilt onall those barns,” Fausset laughed, “but I do believe we’ll easilyhit 100, and who knows, maybe even 200. I feel we have manymore families to include in this farm heritage project.”
BQKC is prepared for those visitors with a download-able, self-guided driving tour map on their website(www.barnquiltswashington.org). It directs interestedtourists who are ‘on the trail’ for barn quilts, and providesthe thread connecting the county’s rural and urban areas.BQKC will add more quilt blocks on barns, buildings andthe map all the time. Look forward to BQKC’s last weekendin April quilt show and celebration at the Kittitas CountyFairgrounds as an annual event. Check the website for moreinformation or call Amy McGuffin, Director of Tourism, Kit-titas County Chamber of Commerce (509-925-2002), orJacky Fausset, Project Coordinator (509-312-9185).
