Overview

This presentation will talk to you about the

Elective courses offered at Bahrain Polytechnic.

We offer elective courses to graduate ‘well-rounded’ open-minded students.

• Electives are courses that are not part of your degree programme requirements. They are not listed on the schedule of the required courses that you must take to get your qualification. They might come from your degree, from other degrees or they come from the elective courses, like those below.

• If you are studying Web Media and want to take a course in Visual Design, you can do so. Courses from other degrees can make up ‘Elective course’ credits if you are accepted in the course.

• You can only take the course if there are no pre-requisites (courses you must take first) and if there are spare places – students on that degree will go first, especially if it is a compulsory course.

Why do you need to do Elective courses?

• Bahrain Polytechnic’s commitment to graduate informed global citizens requires students to take a specific number of elective credits.

• Elective courses let you explore your own interests or discover something new.

• We hope that you will find out more about yourself, more about the region, and more about the world, making you a global citizen.

How many elective credits do you need? • The Bahrain Polytechnic minimum requirement

is 45 credits of Electives.

• One (1) degree or Electives course taught over one semester is usually 15 credits.

• The Bahrain Polytechnic minimum requirement does not include the three National Requirements which are 5 credits each.

• The credits for each degree are shown next.

Hang on! What are Credits?

• Basically, 10 hours of school work equals about one credit.

• Your school work can be in the classroom or self-directed - by yourself.

• Most courses are 15 credits or about 150 hours of work

• You should do about 120 credits a year if you want to finish in four years

And what are Course levels?

• Each course has been made at a certain academic level with corresponding demands

• Every course in the degrees are level five (5) and above

• A Bachelors degree is 480 credits at levels 5 – 8

• These levels are internationally recognised

BICT

National Requirements + 45 Credits All Elective courses must be Level five (5) and above Maximum 20 credits from level five (5)

BILM

National Requirements + 60 Credits All Elective courses must be Level five (5) and above Maximum 20 credits from level five (5)

BVD National Requirements + 45 Credits All Elective courses must be Level five (5) and above Maximum 20 credits from level five (5)

BWM

National Requirements + 45 Credits All Elective courses must be Level five (5) and above Maximum 20 credits from level five (5)

Credits by Degree

Are there any courses in Foundation that count as Electives credits?

• Yes, there are some courses that can count

towards Electives credits.

• For example - AP5301 Personal Academic

Learning

• The Maths and English courses do not count

towards Electives credit.
