Exploration TargetingShort Course
Presented by Steffen Hagemann, T. Campbell McCuaig, Arianne Ford, Alok Porwal, Mike Dentith, Alan Aitken, CET & Industry Staff
MODULE ONE 3 days Geophysics
DATES: 14, 15 & 16 October 2013
VENUE: FNAS North Undergraduate Computer Lab (Room 1.40)
To be confirmed
PRESENTERS: Mike Dentith and Alan Aitken
MODULE TWO 3 days Geochemistry
DATES: 17, 18 & 21 October 2013
VENUE: Third year Geology Lab (Room 1.11), Robert Street Building
This is a 3-day introduction to Geochemistry, Geochemical concepts including dispersion mechanism, pathfinder minerals and elements, mobility of elements, immobile elements, incompatible elements etc.; Types of geochemical surveys; Natural element associations; Geochemical analyses (common analytical techniques) and interpretation diagrams (e.g., variation, Harker, Spider diagrams) including sample preparation, contamination, detection limits etc.; Fingerprinting tectonic and ore environments; Spectral Sensing Solutions to Mineral Exploration.
Presenters: Steffen Hagemann, Carsten Laukamp (CSIRO)
MODULE THREE 4 days Exploration Targeting and Computational Methods
DATES: 22, 23 & 24 October 2013
VENUE: FNAS North Undergraduate Computer Lab (Room 1.40) & Robert Street Lecture Theatre
This module will address how to move from understanding the processes within a mineral system to developing proxies for these processes for use in exploration targeting. The fundamentals of spatial data analysis and simple methods for integrating geoscience data to produce mineral potential maps will be covered. As the techniques are not tied to a specific commodity or study area, they are easily transferrable to different styles of mineralization anywhere in the world. Industry can benefit from mineral potential mapping as it is an efficient, low-cost method to systematically reduce the exploration search space and produce targeting maps. Practical exercises in this module will involve the generation of simple mineral potential maps using ArcGIS.
PRESENTERS: T. Campbell McCuaig, Arianne Ford & Alok Porwal
Participants will acquire (1) a basic understanding of how geophysical and geochemical technologies are used in modern mineral exploration; (2) experience in the integrated analysis of exploration data sets, recognising their respective strengths and weaknesses; and (3) the ability to identify the most appropriate methods for exploring for different commodities in different geological environments.
This course introduces the concepts and applications of geophysical and geochemical techniques in mineral exploration. It deals with the nature of exploration data sets and covers the design and interpretation of geophysical and geochemical surveys for gold, nickel and other metals in areas of outcrop and under cover.
Note: course schedule, module daily schedules and course content is subject to change and will be confirmed closer to course commencement. These changes are related to staff and presenter availability, and market changes.
