Though adaptation projects carried out in the field of forest management.

• The implementation of forestry for adaptation does not imply the design of new interventions, but rather a reorientation of the usual silvicultural practices in order to achieve the objectives.

• Adaptation, to be viable, should promote the multifunctional use of forests.

Main tool: Forests management planning

selviculture

Successful examples of climate change adaptation measures implemented in Spain

MANAGEMENT OF PINES STANDS IN NORTHERN PLATEAU

Action Stand Results Measures

Mixed stand promotion

Pinus pinea-Juniperus-Quercus

More stable mixed stands. Higher productivity and less competition over the principal specie

Different treatments: Regenerative cuttings by selection system for pine stands, selective thinning on coppice for Quercus, and release of trees of Juniperus.

Reforestation *Diversification and introduction of better adapted species

Introduction of species slightly more xeric than the local ones, taking into account future climate conditions

*Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinea, Juniperus thurifera, Cedrus atlántica, Sorbus domestica...…..

MANAGEMENT OF PINES STANDS IN NORTHERN PLATEAU

Action Stand Results Measures

Thinning management

Pinus pineaPositive effect in radial increment of remanent trees, as well as anticipation of fruit production.

Early and intensive removal cuttings (density reduction at early ages 10-15 years)

Regenerative cutting

Pinus pinea and Pinus pinaster

Regeneration guaranteed in dry and exposed sites

Regenerative cutting more gradual and progresive, prioritize the release of the regenerate estrablished, and lengthen the regenerative period

Regenerative cutting

Pinus nigraLonger and more flexible rotations, leading to two-ages stands

Is there a national strategy on adaptation of forests to climate change in Spain?

2015: PIMA Adapta (Environment PromotionPlan for Adaptation to Climate Change in Spain):

2018: Forthcoming launch of PIMA Adapta- Ecosystems: Focused on forestsand agricultural systems:

SOME FUNDING LINES FOR FORESTS ADAPTATION:

Forest management wich anticipate theevolution of forests, regarding to climatechange. Project location: National Parks

Budget distributed among the 17 autonomous communities

Implementation of practices that enhance the synergies between adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural and forest areas of Spain.

Page 8: Expert Group on Adaptation to Climate Change - Forest Europe · adaptation of forest to climate change in Spain? 6.-To assure all forests have a forestry management plan, as a tool

1.-The need to increase the number of projects implemented at the local level.

2.- To increase the resistance and resilience of the stands against climaticextremes, mainly droughts, though selviculture tools (more adequate

rotations, structure and specific composition…..).

What are major challenges related to adaptation of forest to climate change in

Spain?

3.-To implement dynamic forests management frameworks, which implies:

1) Feedback among managers and researches

2) Flexible tools for each case

3) Design and implementation of anticipatory management that considers future climate scenarios

Page 9: Expert Group on Adaptation to Climate Change - Forest Europe · adaptation of forest to climate change in Spain? 6.-To assure all forests have a forestry management plan, as a tool

4.-To promote traditional forestry and silvopasture systems, since they are systems with a high power of adaptation to climate change.

5.-To work in a collaborative way all the agents involved: companies, NGOs, public administrations, local entities, forestry agents, livestock farmers, timber companies ...

What are major challenges related to adaptation of forest to climate change in

Spain?

6.-To assure all forests have a forestry management plan, as a tool to guide the development of specific adaptation measures in the forest area.

7.- To review forests planning guidelines, in order to adopt criteria of forest adaptation to climate change.

8.-Due to associated uncertainty of future climate scenarios, flexibility in forests planning will be key in the future.
