DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERIN THEREINFORCEDCONCRETE.COM EXPERIMENT NO.3 FINENESS MODULUS OF AGGREGATE thereinforcedconcrete.com 17 17 xperiment No.3 The Method for sieve analysis of fine and coarse Aggregate to determine the Fineness Modulus of coarse and fine aggregate. Code: (C 136-05) 3.1 Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine the Fineness Modulus of given samples of fine and coarse aggregate. 3.2 Significance and use 1) This test method covers the determination of the particle size distribution of fine and coarse aggregate by sieving. 2) Fineness Modulus gives the idea about how the coarser or fine the aggregate is. 3) More Fineness Modulus value indicates that aggregate is coarser and vice versa. 4) Fineness Modulus also indicates the surface area of the aggregate. 3.3 Apparatus 3.3.1 Balances The Balances used in testing the fine and coarse aggregate shall have readability and accuracy as follows: For fine aggregate readable and accurate up to 0.1g and for coarse aggregate readable and accurate up to 0.5g. 3.3.2 Sieves The sieve cloth shall be mounted on substantial frames during sieving. The sieve cloth and standard steel frame shall conform to the requirements of Specification E 11. 3.3.3 Mechanical Sieve shaker A mechanical sieve shaker, if used, shall create motion of sieves to cause the particle to bounce, tumble, or otherwise turn so as to present different orientations to the sieving surfaces. 3.3.4 Tray 3.3.5 Aggregate Sample 3.4 Related Theory 3.4.1 Fineness Modulus Fineness Modulus is an index which gives an idea about the coarseness or fineness of the aggregate sample. Greater the F.M value, coarser is the aggregate. E
