Typically, a trip to an outlet mall is a full-day event for residents of northern Nevada. Wake up early, load the family
in the car, fill up on gas and get ready for a long day of driving and shopping. In today’s tough economic times, the hassle seems worth it to save money.
However, with the grand opening of The Legends at Sparks Marina, it’s no longer necessary for shoppers in northern Nevada to travel far for great deals on top brands. The brand-new retail and entertainment center boasts a whole host of reduced-price company stores, also known as outlet or factory stores. “We feel that being able to
provide quality, value-oriented merchandise in this economy will certainly be a benefit to local consumers,” said Dennis McGovern, general manager of The Legends at Sparks Marina. “It will also assist us in drawing many out-of-market shoppers.”
It’s not hard to believe that folks from other cities and states will be the ones gearing up to head for The Legends at Sparks Marina, where they will find big savings at reduced-price company stores such as the Banana Republic Factory Store, Ann Taylor Factory Store, Gap Factory Store, Nike Factory and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH.
“We very much would like northern California shoppers to get used to coming
across the border and taking advantage of the amenities that the Reno-Sparks market has to offer,” McGovern said. “We feel the product we’re creating here, the value found at these factory stores, has a lot to do with that.”
Bringing more dollars into the local economy is one of the big-picture benefits of having such high-end outlet stores located in Sparks. The ability to shop for top styles on a budget — without leaving Truckee Meadows — is a more personal perk for local shoppers.
In the past, for example, residents of northern Nevada who were looking for great deals on high-quality athletic shoes, clothing and accessories had to drive roughly three hours to the nearest Nike Factory Store, located in Vacaville, Calif.
Now local shoppers can find Nike Factory Store, along with a wide array of other value-based shops, right around the corner at The Legends at Sparks Marina.
“Company or factory stores offer limited-run styles, special editions and current and previous seasons’ collections, all at a reduced price,” said Casey O’Looney, marketing director for The Legends at Sparks Marina. “Shoppers can purchase the latest and greatest styles without breaking the bank.”
Reduced-price merchandise found at factory stores runs the gamut from clothing and accessories to shoes and purses, as well as items for the home and garden. Among the outlet shops one will find at The Legends at Sparks Marina are the Nine West Outlet, Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, Lane Bryant Outlet, Gymboree Outlet, Guess Factory Store, Samsonite Factory Outlet and Bose Factory Store.
“There may be a misconception that outlets carry second-hand and damaged goods, and that’s not really what happens in the market nowadays,” McGovern said. “What you’re getting is top-quality merchandise.”
According to Linda Humphers, editor-in-chief of Value Retail News, a trade publication produced by the International Council of Shopping Centers, factory stores frequently feature much more than
overstocked or end-of-season items. In fact, she said these company stores
often give big-name manufacturers the chance to spread out and showcase their complete lines of merchandise.
“Most of these high-end brands have a presence in department stores but not enough space to show the full breadth of what they offer,” she said, “so you’ll tend to find a wider variety of goods in an outlet store than you’d find in a department store.”
As for savings, Humphers said outlet-store price tags usually are anywhere from 10 to 70 percent less than price tags found on comparable products in regular retail venues. Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, for instance, reports discounts of 40 to 70 percent on items ranging from clothing and accessories for men, women and children to goods for the home, all from top designers.
“The goods in outlet stores are direct from the manufacturer without the middleman pricing,” Humphers said. “On average, items are about 30 to 40 percent cheaper across the board.”

BY BRANDI SCHLOSSBERG
For more than a decade, you’ve been hearing the sounds of Smash Mouth consistently — mostly on popular radio stations but also on TV shows, commercials and even the silver screen. Now you can see and hear this “All Star” band in person for free during The
Legends at Sparks Marina Legendary Grand Opening Celebration. The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1. Smash Mouth is expected to play for a
full 90 minutes, followed shortly after by a jaw-dropping fireworks display. The combination should create an unforgettable Saturday night for the whole family to enjoy.
“The Legends is very excited to bring Smash Mouth to northern Nevada for our grand-opening celebration,” said Casey O’Looney, marketing director for The Legends at Sparks Marina. “Smash Mouth is a great family-friendly band, with hits like ‘Walkin’ on the Sun,’ as well as ‘I’m a Believer,’ which was featured in the motion picture ‘Shrek.’”
The Bay Area band, which formed in San Jose in 1994, has collectively sold more than 10 million albums around the world. This comes as no surprise once one knows that Smash Mouth is the band behind such ubiquitous number-one hits as “Walkin’ on the
Sun” and “All Star.”The band’s cover of The Monkees classic “I’m a Believer,” played prominently in the hit
movie “Shrek” and also rose to No. 4 on the Billboard chart, in the Adult Top 40 category.Other Smash Mouth songs that have received plenty of play include a cover of the Four
Seasons “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” and “Then the Morning Comes,” among many others. The band’s first album, “Fush Yu Mang,” went double-platinum, followed by sophomore album “Astro Lounge,” which reached triple-platinum status.
“You can’t miss the live show,” said Smash Mouth bassist Paul DeLisle. “The live show completes the entire package — recordings are only one part of the whole.”
DeLisle, along with vocalist Steve Harwell, is one of the founding members of the band. Both will perform live at The Legends at Sparks Marina, along with fellow band members Leroy Miller and Mitch Marine.
Smash Mouth began as a band with ska-punk roots but has evolved into a group that pulls off sparkling pop, often with a twist of sounds from the ’60s. Their polished sound and diverse capabilities — weaving in styles that range from lounge to reggae to surf rock — has led Smash Mouth to lasting success.

Their names have a home in the legends and lore defining the great state of Nevada: Mark Twain; Sarah Winnemucca; John Mackay; Dat So La Lee.
Appropriate that they’ve also found a home in The Legends at Sparks Marina.
The project’s theme of paying tribute to the faces, voices and history of the region is carried throughout the property, with physical symbols representing their important contributions.
Visitors will find a sculpture of a young Mark Twain browsing through a newspaper, representing his journalistic time in Nevada as editor of Virginia City’s Territorial Enterprise.
They’ll also find a school of the state fish, the Lahontan
Cutthroat Trout, swimming en masse upstream through a series of fountains. And a poster depicting Fallon’s Top Gun flight school. And a striking glass color tower sculpture symbolizing the region’s stunning and colorful natural beauty.
“We’ve come up with concepts that are iconic and fundamentally important to the area,” said Jane McNeely, the art director and designer for the artistic elements throughout The Legends. “I spent a significant amount of time driving throughout the region, exploring Virginia City, visiting museums, talking to people and conducting research. We then came up with a long list of images that were interesting and inspirational from an artistic standpoint.”
Working with a talented group of artists, designers, architects, landscape designers and illustrators — whom she calls her “brainstorming team” — McNeely came up with groupings and pieces that work together and stand
individually to tell a story. “This is one way the project is so committed to giving back
to the community,” she said. “We’ve developed a concept that helps visitors celebrate the interesting people and fun facts that define the region, giving them an opportunity to enjoy the view and learn something at the same time.”
Dave Claflin, vice president of marketing for RED Development, notes the artistic elements lend to the hybrid feel of The Legends.
“We always say there’s something for everyone here, and that includes the art and history elements,” he said. “Men, women, children — even a grumpy shopper like me can find something to enjoy.”
He adds that the first Legends project in Kansas City,

which boasts similar historical elements, frequently is visited by school children who learn of the region’s history through the project’s artistic representations.
McNeely is quick to underscore the concept of representation, as the mixture of modalities telling the story is as diverse as the subjects themselves. Metals, fiberglass, bronze and water are just a few of the mediums, materials that tell stories through sculpture, murals, posters and landscape elements.
The Legends General Manager Dennis McGovern believes the contrast of materials and environments tell a clear story.
“If you look at the architecture and design, coupled with the artistic elements, we’ve created an environment that will serve to make our shoppers comfortable and engaged,” he said.
And that engagement takes a variety of forms, from shoppers browsing through a central plaza highlighting historical elements of the state to reading the explanatory medallions accompanying the sculptures to helping determine the next list of historical figures represented in phases two and three of the project.
“We’re really looking to get the public involved in the process,” McNeely said. “We know there are some important people and ideas missing, things that have contributed greatly to the state, and we’re appealing to the public to tell us who and what they’d like to see.”
And the story can take many forms, from people like Twain to state icons like the mountain bluebird to popular events in popular culture.
“We’ve worked extensively with Mike Houghton from the Reno Air Races on our airplane sculptures,” McNeely said. “We have both popular winners throughout the history of the event combined with the historical legends within the group, and they’re artistically racing around the development.”
But the element that has caused the greatest stir: red rams that appear in various locales.
“People are constantly asking me why I chose to make them red,” McNeely said. “It’s all about perspective. As a designer, I’ve got big spaces and great natural materials with a very high-end look. Every once in a while you need to add a punch of color.”
Snowshoe Thompson is one of the “legends” at The Legends.

In the past, local shoppers had to leave the area or even
the state to find certain in-demand brands. Now Sparks
is a top destination for discerning shoppers from near
and far, as The Legends at Sparks Marina is home to nearly
40 retailers never before located in northern Nevada.
Known as “first-to-market” shops, these are stores one
will find nowhere near this region. Previously, locals had
to travel long distances, often out of state, to find such
retailers. This not only cost shoppers more time and money,
but also cost northern Nevada millions in taxable sales
annually, as buyers took their money outside the local
market.
“You won’t find these shops at Meadowood Mall or The
Summit,” said Casey O’Looney, marketing director for The
Legends at Sparks Marina. “Before, you would have to drive
out of state, and as a result, tax revenue also would go out
of state, which is bad for our local economy.”
According to research conducted by Meridian Business
Advisors and the University of Nevada, Reno Center for
Regional Studies, The Legends at Sparks Marina will create
an annual economic impact of $415 million per year for
the next 20 years. The destination retail and entertainment
center also is expected to draw 600,000 to 800,000 new
tourists to the area annually.
“We believe that having 37 first-to-market shops sets
us apart from the great retailing that already exists in the
Reno-Sparks market,” said Dennis McGovern, general
manager of The Legends at Sparks Marina. “We also feel
strongly that having all these first-to-market stores certainly
gives shoppers from northern California a reason to venture
into this market — and leave some of their dollars here in
this market as well.”
Among these first-to-market retailers are famous names
such as Harry & David, Nike Factory Store, Bose Factory
Store, Converse, Michael Kors and Volcom. (See breakout
box for a full list of first-to-market stores set to open at The
Legends at Sparks Marina.)
“Many of our first-to-market retailers are factory stores or
company stores, which is something you don’t see elsewhere
in this market,” O’Looney said. “This means shoppers who
are working within a budget can get more for their money.”
At Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, for example, folks will
find discount designer clothing and accessories in signature
Saks Fifth Avenue style. Collections for men, women and
children, as well as goods for the home, will be available for
40 to 70 percent less than original prices.
The phrase “first-to-market” also goes beyond accessories
and apparel, extending to eateries and recreational venues
never before seen in northern Nevada as well. These include
Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen; Cadillac Ranch; Fuddruckers;
FreshBerry Yogurt Café; and Patsy Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-
Oven Pizzeria.
Specialty shops such as Harry & David and Old Farmer’s
Almanac add yet another layer to The Legends at Sparks
Marina experience, offering the type of treats one must
typically travel or go online to find.
Coming soon, at the Harry & David store, shoppers will
find beautiful gift baskets and the goodies to fill them, from
fresh fruit and exquisite chocolates to gourmet cakes and
cookies. It’s also the perfect place to stock up for a party.
The exciting first-to-market shops found at The Legends
at Sparks Marina offer a wide array of in-demand brands
and hard-to-find items for area shoppers. These retailers
and restaurants also help keep local dollars right here in
northern Nevada — and bring in tourist money as well.
“The Legends at Sparks Marina provides locals with
the kind of shopping experience you can’t find anywhere
else in northern Nevada,” O’Looney said. “Loaded with
first-to-market retailers, The Legends also promises to draw
destination shoppers from across state lines.”

destination is the word being used to describe The Legends at Sparks Marina. With prominent retailers establishing storefronts never before seen in Reno and
Sparks, The Legends is a hot spot this summer for the area’s best shopping.
Sports brands are throwing the first pitch as outlet stores open with famous names and styles. Adidas and Converse step up to the plate with their signature lines of clothing and equipment, while skaters and surfers will turn out for Vans Outlet and Volcom. Nike Factory Store, never a name to be left off the roster, will open its first northern Nevada outlet at The Legends in a regional debut for this top-selling athletic brand.
“This is our first store in the area and we are looking forward to becoming a part of the Sparks community,” said Nike Factory Stores General Manager Jeff Nichols. “Through our
involvement with the local Boys & Girls Club, our ReUse A Shoe program and our National Grant program, this store and its 48 employees are excited for the opportunity to give back to the community. As a graduate myself of the University of Nevada, Reno, I am especially excited to finally have a Nike presence in the area.”
Trendy looks from Ann Taylor Factory, BCBG Max Azria, and Jones New York also join The Legends lineup, along with laid-back styles and prices at Banana Republic Factory Store, GUESS Factory, Gap Factory Store and Tommy Hilfiger Company Store. Kids will find their favorite fashions at OshKosh B’Gosh, Gymboree Outlet and Carter’s. One of the most anticipated arrivals in this diverse retail scene is Saks OFF 5TH, offering a legendary name at an outlet price. One of only seven Saks locations in the country to feature the company’s new modern, loft-style design, the arrival of OFF 5th at The
Legends marks a shift in the caliber of shopping in northern Nevada.
“Being part of The Legends at Sparks Marina is an extremely exiting opportunity,” said Robert Wallstrom, president of Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH. “We are proud to be a part of this very unique lifestyle center and to bring the enhanced OFF 5TH experience to the vast local and tourist population of Reno-Sparks. No other retailer like OFF 5TH exists in the area. We look forward to being a part of this exceptional community.”
Helping to round out the retail mix at The Legends are gourmet gifts from Harry & David, outlets from Samsonite and Bose and a Bath & Body Works. The Legends at Sparks Marina has the best shopping in town, and there is no better time to snag great deals than during the Legendary Grand Opening Celebration, July 31-Aug. 9. ■
