91 Expedition 6, Lesson 8 The Early Days of Animation 1 A small, black mouse with large, round ears tap dances across a floor. A pipe-smoking sailor swallows spinach out of a can. He suddenly grows bulging arm muscles and punches a bully into the next county. A long-eared, carrot- chomping rabbit hops out of his hole. “Eeyah, what’s up, Doc?” he asks. 2 Do you recognize Mickey Mouse, Popeye, and Bugs Bunny? In the first half of the 20th century, these characters captured the imagination of theater audiences. They appeared in the first animated cartoons. These cartoons were mainly short features. In 1937, the Walt Disney company created the first full-length animated movie. The movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It took three years to produce. 3 Animation for television appeared in the 1950s. Weekly cartoon programs soon became popular. They included shows such as Huckleberry Hound and The Flintstones. Most of them were created for children. But, for the most part, the quality of TV animation wasn’t as good as that for movies. Hand-drawn animation took a long time. It cost too much to produce weekly. Animated Movies Roy Sato, senior animator, working on a digital animation feature
