—-David Brinkley

Earnest George “Pa” Parks, 93, the oldest of five sons born to the late Walker Park and Minnie Buzan Park, passed away suddenly while at the VA Hospital in Tucson on Dec. 23, 2015. He was born in Tucson on Aug. 1, 1922. He is survived by his wife Katherine; two daughters, Mary McCool (Ken) and Betty Finch (Neil), and a son, Ernest Jr (Karen). There are six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John; and many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. His family moved to Dudleyville when he was a youngster. He attended elementary classes at Hayden Junction and graduated from high school at Hayden in 1941. Shortly after graduation Earnest joined the Navy and served as a boatswain’s mate during World War II. He was the pilot on small landing craft that put marines onto beaches all over the South Pacific. Earnest was extremely proud of his military service and even as a senior citizen would have re-enlisted in a heartbeat. It was during his Navy service, that a typographical error occurred in his official paperwork and his last name was changed from

Earnest George Parks“Park” to “Parks”. Near the end of his Navy enlistment, he came home on leave and married Mary Katherine Ortkiese, a local girl whom he had met while she was a high school student in Hayden. In November of 2015, they completed the 70th year of their marriage. In 1957, with a young family, Earnest returned to the Hayden/Winkelman area, and went to work at the Kennecott reduction plant. He remained there until his retirement in 1983. He became a supervisor in 1959 and really enjoyed the technical challenges that were often presented. Outside of his day job, Earnest served as a Boy Scout leader, operated a welding shop, and taught welding for the local community college. He was an expert fabricator. He and his wife were also active in an equestrian trail riding club. Pa loved horses and would have given anything to have been able to live the “cowboy” lifestyle. In the 1980s, after his home in Winkelman was damaged

by flooding, he and Katherine moved away eventually settling in Tucson to be closer to kids and grandkids. Earnest was very interested in his family’s genealogy and put together an extensive history of the Park and Buzan families. He also re-established contact with quite a few of his Navy buddies and traveled to several of their reunion gatherings. Pa was very proud of his kids and grandkids. He lived long enough to see all of the grandchildren reach adulthood and have families of their own. He was always very interested to hear about everyone’s activities and projects. His family will miss him greatly. Funeral services are pending the opening of the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana.

Socorro M. McMillan was born June 26, 1925 in Sonora, Arizona. She passed away Jan. 7, 2016 in Apache Junction, Arizona. She is survived by her son, Rubin McMillan Jr, and his wife Jennie McMillan; son, John McMillan, and his fiancé Carolyn Encinas; and two brothers, Paul (Amelia) Rodriguez and Ernie (Marcela) Santos. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tyler, Ian, Kaytlin, Elicia, Savannah, and Sarah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rubin McMillan Sr,; and two brothers, Felix Ramirez and John Ramirez. Socorro was a very loving, caring, wonderful strong woman, who cherished her family, especially her sons and grandchildren. She was very proud of her heritage, and that she was born in Sonora, Arizona. She would often

Socorro M. McMillanreminisce about her upbringing and the wonderful life she had there. She met her husband and was married there as well. Later, they moved to Kearny, Arizona where they raised their two sons. While living in Kearny, she was very involved with Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church. She sang in the choir, taught at the Arts and Crafts program the church held each summer, participated in their prayer group, and was part of the Altar Society. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, cooking and keeping the spirit and history of Sonora alive. Later after her husband passed away, she moved to Apache Junction to be closer to her sons and their families. Funeral will be held on Thursday Jan. 14, 2016 at St George’s Catholic Church in Apache Junction. Rosary will begin at 9 a.m. Viewing will be from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Mountain View Funeral Home & Cemetery in Mesa after the mass.

MAYOR’S CORNERBy Sam Hosler

Special to the Copper Basin News

Well, it’s 2016 now. I’m a little over two weeks out from my surgery and my doc says I have at least four weeks more to go. Now, if you see

me driving around town, please call the police! While I was in the hospital, I discovered that my driver’s license is expired. No driving for me until I can take the exam. The next meeting of the Kearny Town Council is Monday, January 18, at 7:30 p.m. The official hearing on the proposed increase in the water rates is during this meeting. I hope all interested citizens will be present. The Task Force charged with developing a proposal for a unified municipal police department was busy all through December, and will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, January 20, at 5:30 p.m. in Hayden. Inventories have been made in all towns, and one session dealt extensively with the need to build a new communications system, not only for police, but for fire and EMS as well. The group is beginning to grapple with legal realities and with cost analyses in relation to staffing levels. There’s much work remaining to be done before a proposal comes about. This Sunday, at 2 p.m., the Volunteers in Patrol (VIPS) will meet at Constitution Hall for a training session. Let me put in a pitch. I would love for Kearny to have more VIPS. They provide real service to the people of Kearny. If you and your friends are interested, please come to this gathering and learn more. I especially extend this invitation to the younger residents of Kearny. The Winkelman Natural Resource Conservation District, chaired by Bill Dunn, is gathering for its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, January 20, at the General Kearny Inn. That same day, students from the Herzberger School at Arizona State University will make the first of a series of trips to Kearny to meet with citizens, explore the ravages

The WNRCD, the Herzberger School, the Town of Kearny, ASARCO, and private property owners are all exploring ways to work together. Meanwhile, the wet winter is stimulating tamarisk growth. There’s still time to register a foursome, and remember that Rotary members will have lunch goodies for sale at the golf course, I’ll be there simply because I’m tired of my own cooking!

The Kearny Airport has a new tenant. Doug Riggins, a pilot and contractor, has been working on a new hangar at the Kearny Airport and has plans to relocate his two planes from Show Low. The hangar is big enough to house three planes, but his plan is for two. “One is a restoration project,” Doug said, explaining that the milder weather in Kearny means he can work on his plane in the winter. It’s too cold in Show Low. “My wife and I are going to be snowbirds,” Doug told the Copper Basin News. The couple purchased a home in Kearny but will go back and forth to Show Low until Doug officially retires within the next year. Mrs. Riggins is spending most of her time in Kearny, Doug said, adding with a laugh that he’s pretty sure he won’t be able to drag her back to the cold weather. When asked how he discovered Kearny, Doug explained that he spent several years flying from Show Low to Tucson, Casa Grande and “other points south.” His path took him over Kearny many times; he noticed the runway,

but never really had time to explore. When his wife retired and began looking for a warmer climate, they decided to explore Kearny. “We just loved the place,” he said. They met Dan Radcliffe at the Kearny Airport, calling him the “Kearny Ambassador at the Airport.” There were no open hangars available and since Doug owns a construction company, he began negotiations with the Town of Kearny to build one. The Kearny Airport is within walking distance of Doug’s home, a selling point that was high on his list of priorities. He calls Kearny the “best kept secret in the aviation community.” On nice weekends, he said, there isn’t room to park a plane at the Kearny Airport because of the pilots who fly in from all over Arizona. They fly in, park their planes and head over to the West End Cafe for breakfast or lunch. Pilots often look for airports with nearby restaurants. “Kearny has that,” he said. Doug is looking forward to retirement and completion of his new hangar. The hangar, he said, is going to allow him to transition from construction to airplane maintenance. We welcome you to Kearny, Doug, and wish you the best of luck!

New hangar for Kearny AirportThe new hangar is just bones now, but will soon be ready to house planes. James Carnes | CBN

Snowplows were out in force Thursday, Jan. 7, after a hard-hitting snow storm blanketed the area. Highways through mountain passes were closed periodically while plows worked to clear the roads. John Hernandez | Copper Area News

Last week was the first week of what is expected to be a very cold and rainy winter for Arizona. After just a few days of rain Queen Creek flowed through Superior. Many hikers, walkers and those just enjoying the rare moments when water flows freely through the desert visited Superior to see the creek and waterfalls running. Just a few miles east of Superior, El Niño left plenty of snow for everyone to enjoy. Drivers are encouraged to be cautious as rocks may be loose due to the rains and snow and freezing temperatures at night make for icy roads.

Climbing Picacho PeakPicacho Peak towers above I-10 about halfway between

Phoenix and Tucson. The black mountain shoots up out of the flat desert earth, a steep rocky crag like a fist shaking at

the heavens. It is the most noticeable landmark for miles around in any direction. The state park is famous for its spring display of wildflowers but climbing to the top of the mountain is a very exciting adventure featuring steel cable ladders, and catwalks. Picacho is a Spanish word which means “peak”, so the correct translation is “Peak Peak.” Picacho Peak is believed to be about 22 million years old or four times older than the Grand Canyon. Although the towering spire of rock resembles a volcano, it is actually a long ago lava flow that was eventually tilted on its side

to create this steep peak. Geologists are not certain where the prehistoric volcano which regurgitated this giant mountain was located. We park at the Sunset Vista trail head. We start hiking, meandering between volcanic boulders amidst a thick saguaro forest. The first couple miles of the trail are relatively flat as we approach closer to the steep peak. It becomes apparent that we will pay for this relatively easy stretch of hiking as we approach the base of the peak and suddenly the angle of the slope changes drastically. Shortly after the trail becomes extremely steep we come across the first of the cable ladders. The ladder climbs the black rock maybe fifty feet, the top bending away and just out of sight. The climb is simple, grab a cable with each hand and then there are plenty of footholds on the craggy black rock. I take one careful step at a time as I slowly ascend the cliff, grabbing a cable tightly in each hand while my heart pounds wildly. Atop the ladder we come to a trail junction, to the left is the trail we will take back down but to the right is the trail which climbs the peak. At first glance the trail disappears into the steep wilderness but there is a faint trail meandering amidst the rock and cactus. We soon come to a second set of cables, nowhere near as precarious as the first. The set of cables after that winds up a sharp turn like a craggy spiral staircase. My heart pounds wildly once again, equal parts exertion and nerves. Every year the state park holds reenactments of the Battle of Picacho Pass, the 2nd westernmost battle of the Civil War. On April 15th, 1862 a group of Union soldiers attacked a small group of Confederate scouts at Picacho Pass in the shadow of Picacho Peak. The battle decided nothing much in a war that was being determined further east. Every March the state park hosts reenactments of the Battle of Picacho Pass as well as reenactments of other western Civil War Battles. Ironically, there are often many more eager volunteers reenacting the Battle of Picacho Pass than participated in the original skirmish. The enthusiasm and pageantry of men on horseback makes for a

wonderful afternoon. The next cable ladder leads to a narrow catwalk. Although there is another cable to hold and netting to catch us, I am

becoming painfully aware just how high we are now and how really steep this mountain is. I tread the narrow boards of the catwalk very carefully. There was a second Civil War battle fought at Picacho Peak that is not nearly as well known. John D. Walker lived among the Pima for many years and even wrote the first Pima dictionary. When the Civil War arrived he led two companies of Pima and

Maricopa against their traditional enemies - the Apache. Walker led his native soldiers into battle wearing only a breech clout and war paint. His long hair was tied up in a bun. His face was painted black with ash. Walker charged into battle with a wild war whoop and an ironwood club. Walker and his company of Pima warriors surprised a group of Apaches atop Picacho Peak and slaughtered a camp of seventy five men, women and children. Those victims who were not shot leapt from the steep precipices to escape the withering assault. Major Dorn reported in his interview with Farish for his History of Arizona written in 1918 , “Even now (approximately fifty years later) you still see on this battlefield, the skeletons of the Apaches in the crevices.” The last of the cable ladders behind us we begin the final, relatively easy ascent to the peak. The geology at the top changes, the rocks are no longer the bubbly basalt which forms the towering spire but become a Precambrian granite, rocks torn free from deep inside the earth and carried to the surface. The view is incredible, vistas in every direction. We start to name the mountains we recognize Santa Catalina, Antelope Hill, Tabletop

Mountain, Black Mesa, the Galiluros and more including Baboquivari the sacred mountain of the O’odham. The Rooster Cogburn Ranch is nestled at the base of the peak. It is an ostrich ranch. The ostriches figure in one of my favorite Arizona legends. More than a century ago a stagecoach bandit named El Tejano was ambushed at Picaho Pass. His ghost has been seen in the region many times since they built the interstate highway. He charges down the steep slopes of Picacho Peak atop a snorting stallion. It is said that when the wind gusts atop this flat stretch of highway it is the ghost of the stagecoach bandit El Tejano, shaking coins loose from automobiles and still earn an ill-gotten living. The legend has changed in recent years. Now the ghost of El Tejano charges recklessly down the slopes of Picacho Peak riding an ostrich. Just something to think about the next time you are driving past Picacho Peak and a gust of wind shakes your car. Beware the ghost of El Tejano.Editor’s Note: Gary Every is a columnist who writes for the CBN’s sister newspapers, Pinal Nugget and Oracle Towne Crier. We thought our Copper Basin readers would enjoy this story about a nearby landmark.
