The Middle Passage

• Name given to the ordeal an enslaved person’s journey from the West coast of Africa to the lands of the Americas

• Slave traders packed the ships as tightly as possible with their “human cargo”

• Occupied a space of 4 to 5 feet high to 2-3 feet wide

• Chained together-they could neither fully stand-up nor lie down
