Terms of Reference

Deliverables

� Short course on database development with accompanying lecture notes and lab exercises which the College of Science may eventually use

� Review and propose changes to BS Information Technology and BS Computer Science curriculums

Workshop entitled

‘Database Development using Oracle -Data Models and SQL

(Structured Query Language)’

Workshop on Database Development

•used latest version of Oracle RDBMS and tools. 3 hours lecture and 3 hours lab.

•ran for 6 weeks and attended by 50 students;half were in 2nd year and the other half, senior students.

Challenges

Knowledge and skills transfer went on a slow place because of the mixed audience. Students with no prior SQL exposure were mixed with those that had.

Senior students were less engaged due to their ongoing

Had to changed the lesson plans as I go!

- Reduced the scope of the topics

- Added more hands on and practical exercises

- Included more common topics to audience: inspirational and motivational videos

Certificates of attendance and proficiency are to be awarded to deserving students based on assignments and practical exercises.

A student survey is to be held on the last day to measure the outcome from the workshop.

the target audience are IT faculty members only, as part of a faculty development plan, and held during semestral breaks.

there were more prior consultation with PSU on the TOR and DOST approves the engagement earlier for planning purposes.

� Engaged the College of Science (Dean Sonia Bonagua), the IT Department Chair (Mary Joy Abueg-delos Trinos) and the accreditation IT faculty member (Maylene Udtojan) in the conduct of the review.

� Reviewed Memo of Commission of Higher Education (CHED) Memo 53 series 2006

� Compared the CHED memo curriculums against that offered at PSU.

In so far as the curriculum only is considered,

� BS Computer Science is 91 % compliant� BS Information Technology is 94 % compliant. � B S Information System is not offered at PSU.

Review of IT education curriculums

From the comparison, course units need to be removed, new ones introduced and existing ones changed. These were discussed and enumerated in a report submitted to VP Academics.

A new course offering on Research Preparation, Creation and Publication.

ONLY course titles in the curriculums were compared , not down to each course units syllabi.

In support of a revised curriculum, I recommend to

� Setup a network with servers that will be used for lab on applied technology courses (i.e. network , database and system administration)

� Get synergies in place amongst Computer Science department, PSU’s ICT Centre , other PSU colleges and other universities at Puerto Princesa

� Create an IT faculty development plan.

Offer MS Office Productivity Skills course to all students

Set-up a local Toast Masters International club in Puerto Princesa so as to improve on verbal communication skills

A study as to the target outsourcing market, and the needed IT support services, will help, if not yet available.
