It expected that the society of traditional village will always be able to bring their original culture and never affected by the dynamic of modernization. However, this regulation was unwise since they did not consider the human rights which have freedom to received welfare life and tend to create a human museum for culture purposes.

THE COMMODIFICATION OF THE ARCHITECTURE OF A PURI IN BALI: A Case Study of Puri Saren Agung Ubud

BHARUNA, Anak Agung Gede Djaja

Abstract

Puri Saren Agung, located in Ubud Bali, is a tourist attraction that is developed based on the concept of cultural tourism. As the traditional ruling house of Ubud, it has important historical, philosophical, and aesthetic values. The values are presented from the puri’s layout that was inspired by the conception of the Hindu religion. It is the architectural evident of the royal families’ roles as a center and patron of socio-cultural activities.

Tourism development in Bali tends to lead to commodification in many sectors of the community life. Commodification involves not only production or a commodity, but also distribution and consumption. In order to gain economic benefit, the puri was developed as a cultural tourist attraction. This is a way to support its socio-cultural functions and to maintain its traditional power.

Although the puri is a tourist attraction, its traditional form, building construction and layout have been maintained. The sanga mandala concept, the nine zones representing the variety of values, is still presented in its layout. These nine zones can be categorized in three main zones: utama, madya nista. The most sacred value is called utama; the middle, called madya, is a space for dwelling; and the most profane value, called nista, is a place for public services. Based on a research fieldwork, the puri has also been used as accommodations and art performances for tourists. These additional functions have caused the transformation of the nista area. However, the other areas have been maintained to perform its traditional functions. The appropriate and integrated tourism development has led a symbiotic mutualism in the commodification of Puri Saren Agung Ubud.

BALINESE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE IN BALI AGA VILLAGES: Impacts and Challenges

YUDANTINI, Ni Made

Abstract

This research examines the Balinese cultural landscape, and specifically the traditional villages of Indigenous rural villages, mostly termed Bali Aga. The villages are differentiated by geography with highlands areas in the north part of Bali Island, and embrace the Hindu religion. The philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, being the core Bali Aga fundamental concept, applies to the whole of the life of the Balinese people. The philosophy is expressed vertically in the human-landscape relationship to the God, the horizontal axis relationship between people to human beings, and the relationship between people to their environment. There is significant differentiation in the culture and tradition arising from the influence of the Majapahit Kingdom that significantly impacted upon Balinese life especially in the southern part of Bali. As a consequence of this Kingdom, many Indigenous Bali Aga rural villages still conserve and continue their original traditional culture and traditions. These villages were not significantly influenced by the Majapahit Kingdom period, whereas the villages in southern part of Bali were significantly affected.

The research involved a deep examination of the culture of Bali Island; a place internationally recognized for its extant Bali Kuna period scenic natural environment. Additional recognition by UNESCO through ICOMOS in 2012 identified the characteristic rice terraces of many Bali Aga villages, with their subak irrigation systems, and the village adherence the Tri Hita Karana

SEKALA-NISKALA AND THE BALINESE HOUSE IN TOURISM ECONOMY: Understanding an Evaluation Process in the Transformation

of the Traditional Architecture

PUTRA I D G A Diasana. I B G Wira Wibawa MANTRA

Abstract

The traditional Balinese house is not only a physical structure but also a representation of a social and spiritual expression. Spatially, the house is organised according to a particular arragement based on ritual positions and movements. In this context, Balinese classify all existence to become a critical distinction between sekala and niskala. Sekala is visible things and niskala is invisible related to supernatural forces or religious values. This concept is usually used as a guidance to organize spaces so that they present spiritual symbols of ritual processions and locations. However, tourism economy has caused the transformation of the house. New structures have been built in the house for tourist facilities. The new additional functions to serve tourists present an architectural struggle between obtaining economic benefit and maintaining spiritual expression of the house.

In order to explore the struggle, the physical transformations of the traditional house were investigated. Spatial stories and the narrative of cultural activities in the house are contextualized to reconstruct the process of transformations for spatial examinations. This article explores the consideration of Balinese’s actions in the process of the transformation and the reasons behind the process. It argues that the transformation is evaluation process that involves sekala and niskala concept. This process, especially the transformation of the family temple, involves a high priest to ensure that the transformation meets the teaching of Hindu Balinese religion without losing its traditional values. However, far from maintaining the essence, the new configurations have waned their functions and meaning. Some architectural components, representing socio cultural and environmental contexts, have vanished from the house.

PRAJNAWRDHI, Tri Anggraini

Abstract

Denpasar, the capital city of Bali, has been facing the highest population increase due to migration, urbanisation and tourism. Thus, rapid development and growth to cater for the population influx has been unavoidable. In addition, both new development and development infill in Denpasar have affected the pattern of old development. Uncontrolled new development has had a negative impact to the environment and urban quality. Thus, this has created a multidimensional problem for Denpasar. This paper concluded that there are several issues that need to be addressed. All groups of respondents demonstrated that the Urban Design Principles within planning and development are vital due to the current conditions in Denpasar. It includes image of Denpasar as a memory of place, change of land uses with less-integrated; poor linkage and connectivity also lack of public open space; and vehicle-oriented development due to lack of appropriate infrastructure to support pedestrians and cyclists. MUKTIWIBOWO, Antonius Karel

Abstract

Many research and scholars believe that identity is a key factor in the production of Urban Place, which often been challenged by rapid urbanization. This statement is debatable, as there are many factors related to the identity change, therefore, this paper argues that there are more internal factors from local community than external factors from urbanization, which influence the urban identity transformation. Two questions are investigated. First, What are the pattern of contested neighbourhood identity in Denpasar, Second, What are the factors related with neighbourhood visual identity transformation? A qualitative methodology with case study research was utilized, with several tools such as visual observation, fieldwork survey, and geographical GIS mapping. All collected data were further analyzed through correlation, comparison, categorization among multiple data and related literature review. The findings indicate that internal factor of local community who supposed to preserve identity become more dominant for neighbourhood identity change. These internal factors are transformation of activity system, trends, and economic factors. The most interesting internal factor is economic,

MEASURING ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE: a GIS Based Investigation

SUSANTO, Oggie. N P Giri Putri SETYAWATHI

Abstract

Recently, South Australia’s population has experienced significant growth due to a relatively large share of Australia’s overseas migrants. Overseas migrants make up nearly 25% of SA’s population. SA’s future population growth is expected to have greater population aged 65+ than the younger population. Undoubtedly, migration and ageing will present challenges to public infrastructure. A growing number of population studies has revealed that elderly and certain groups of immigrant to be at risk for inferior health status. There is a concern that population increased has resulted to the fall of health service standard per-person.

Lately, there has been an increased attention directed at the differences in level of health-care between “the city and the rural”. The government has committed towards improvement of health-care in metropolitan area. Unfortunately, health-care in Australia has shown a declined access with increasing remoteness. Little attention has been paid to analyse the level of health-care in rural area. Thus, this paper aims to measure the access to health service in SA’s non-metropolitan area, which may contribute to a more effective way in planning the rural health-care system.

Most importantly, the health resources available be directed toward the communities who most need them. Hence, it is significant to identify geographical accessibility of health service for population living in outer metropolitan area. Geographical Information System (GIS) offers a methodology that helps in developing a community-based health-care system. This paper presents two GIS methodologies for identifying the accessibility to health-care in SA’s non-metropolitan area. Method one locates population using residential land parcels and method two using census data. Cheonggye River ( Cheonggyeheon Stream , Cheonggyeheon ) is a small river which is located in the capital city of Seoul , South Korea . This river has a length of about 5.8 km that stretches from west to east. In the 1970s, South Korea entered a period of industrialization characterized by the development of the infrastructure in Seoul downtown. One of infrastructure construction was defined as fulfilling the needs of the movement of vehicles or traffic in the center of Seoul. The Central Government took the initiative to close the Cheonggye stream through development projects and flyover policies. Mega projects allocate huge budgets.

For decades Cheonggye river bank area was turned into economic zones and business. But over time Cheonggye river condition is getting worse than ever as poor water quality, slums, and the emergence of security issues. Thus, the development of urban planning in the past have ignored the main function of the Cheonggye stream. The development policy only focuses on economic growth without thinking properly sustainability aspects of the environment and social.

CHANGING THE HOUSE LIVES: An Ethnographic Approach of Urban Dwellings in Denpasar

AGUSINTADEWI, Ni Ketut

Abstract

A house is more than physical space in which people live; it is also a space where social interaction and rituals take place. A house is laid out in terms of how it is to be used. The nature of the relationship between culture and the house tends to implicitly assume that both are equivalent units. Culture is essentially a vast domain, whereas the house is small part of and a subset of culture. Meanwhile, culture transition that has been affected by globalisation and modernisation is a significant phenomenon of housing transformation in Denpasar. These factors have influenced almost all aspects of the occupants’ lives, including house activities. These activities are direct expressions of lifestyle and ultimately of culture. The specific of activity in the house are mediated by culture. House and domestic life cannot therefore be looked upon as a single activity, but must be considered as activity systems. In this context of this paper, activity systems are inevitably organised in space and time. This paper reveals how continuing socio-cultural processes modify behavioural settings of domestic activities in Balinese houses, which are classified into two groups of activity: both ritual and daily. All are practiced as a system of activity of the dwellers in the specific period. It allows qualitative study in the process of inquiry that enables the researcher to be fully involved in the field to get closer to the cases. In-depth interviewing using a story-telling technique can be obtained through direct interactions with the interviewees and observations in the field to understand themes and issues. This method is an appropriate strategy for collecting data for an ethnographic approach. Finally, the analysis enabled identification of links between people, houses, and socio-cultural factors within the process of housing transformation.
