A remodeling of a 10 year old shopping center with goals of providing urban scale by use of amonumental wall , aut o scale by redesign of the arcade and site to att rac t the passing motorist ,and walkin g scale to relat e to the shoppe r by providing a shaded and pleasant enclosure. Abudget of 70,000 dollars for architectural work and 20,000 for landscaping provided limitswhich called for prior ities to be established to gain the maximum impa ct.

An 8 million gallon reservoir located in East Albuquerque near a prominent entrance to theUniversity of ew Mexico. The project was as a consultant to an engineering firm doing astructural renovation of the reservoir . The structurally supporting berm was surfaced withboulders which provide immediate textural interest until plantings matured. A warm-toneconcrete fascia replaced a chain link fence barrier. Sheltered reading and conversation areaswere developed in the space adjacent.

Jury Comments

We were impressed with the design assignment and believe the architect did an excellent job.The use of the reading and conversation areas was impressive and well done. The engineer is tobe complimented who hired the architect for the aesthetics.

Th e remodelin g of an existi ng ran ch house built in ab out 1860 to crea te a comtem porary vaca­tion hom e and guest quarters. Cov ered porches and walkways are used to unify the buildingsand provide a sense of the original Texas pioneer style. The site is opened by removal of a sto nefence and additional landscaping added .
