High-Level View of EtherSAM Test Methodology
Phase 2: Service Performance Test
Objective: Validate the QoS of each defined service
and the conformity of the SLA
Methodology: All services are generated at once to their CIR, and all KPIs are measured for all services
Phase 1: Service Configuration Test
(Ramp Test and optional Burst Test)
Objective: Validate the network configuration of each defined services (rate limiting, traffic shaping and QoS)
Methodology: For each service, a ramp test is used to gradually reach and exceed the CIR. All KPIs are
measured against a threshold. A n optional Burst test is performed for each service, All KPIs are measured.

It works but…
Yes the Legacy Hybrid approach works but its not perfect. There are still external
pressures!
It’s costly!
TDM represents 40% of MNO’s total operational expense!
6-1
Cost per megabit ratio of a T1/E1 circuit vs Ethernet packet based backhaul
averages 6 to 1
Complete Ethernet Backhaul
The MNO’s dream is to have everything Ethernet… but would that even be
feasible???

SynchronizationSo where do MNO’s go from here?
E1/T1 & Sonet/SDH
Growing bandwidth requirements at edge of network mean
that E1/SDH are being replaced with higher rate services
such as Ethernet/IP. Still ubiquitous in the core network.
GPS
Good performance, supporting a wide range of
applications. Cost and autonomy define deployment
adoption.
Synchronous Ethernet
Adds frequency stability transfer to Ethernet
communication. Performance similar to SDH however end-
to-end SyncE support required on all devices in the chain.

and high rate of adoption

Lets compare 1588 to SyncE
Synchronous Ethernet operates at the physical layer and transports the frequency only.
Synchronous Ethernet cannot at the moment transport the notion of time (i.e. Time-of-Day).
Synchronous Ethernet timing distribution has equivalent performance as SONET/SDH and is
interoperable with SONET/SDH timing distribution networks.
Synchronous Ethernet transport its timing quality level via the ESMC.
IEEE 1588 provides frequency and time synchronization
Synchronous Ethernet can be used in conjunction with other packet network timing solutions when
Synchronous Ethernet cannot reach the network edge (or vice-versa), for example IEEE 1588v2
(2008).

1588 PTP What is it?
›1588 PTP is actually a standard called IEEE-1588
›PTP stands for Precision Time Protocol
›IEEE 1588 provides a standard protocol for synchronizing clocks connected
via a packet based multicast capable network, such as Ethernet.

1588 PTP Components
›Grandmaster = As the name implies, they are an essential component of any
PTP solution. They are the Primary reference source (PRS) for everything
below them
›Boundary Clock = These guys serve as intermediaries between a
Grandmaster and its PTP clients. It helps to mitigate the number of network
hops and resulting delays. They eliminate the need to have a GPS timing
source at every server location, which in turn reduces the cost to deploy PTP
›Ordinary clock / Slave / Client / EnodeB = These are the clients that try to
sync up with the Boundary or Grandmaster

1588 Clock Quality levels
›In a PTP world there can be multiple Grandmaster clocks
›Slaves / Ordinary clocks need a method to figure out which Grandmaster is the right one for them.
›This selection happens by knowing what quality levels the GM is broadcasting.
›Without getting into too much details this method is basically stolen or re-used from the Sonet/SDH world. Syncrhonisation status messages (SSM’s) worked fine to determine clock levels for Sonet/SDH world.
›Clock sources used for synchronization in telecommunications networks are rated by quality. Typically, a network element uses the highest quality stratum available to it, which can be determined by monitoring the synchronization status messages (SSM’s). In PTP this is done by monitoring the incoming clock QL’s

›QL-PRC= Primary Rate Clock…is also a Grandmaster but in
