Monday 28th September – Prime Stock Market
** WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!**
HELP US TO HELP YOU and lets keep the Country fed with GREAT BRITISH FOOD!
Prime Cattle to 209 ppk and £1358 Barren Cows to 112 ppk and £724
A better entry of prime cattle, quality wise this week with a top of 209ppk given for a smart 466kg British Blue heifer
(19m) from Phillip Dennis and family of North Tawton whilst a terrific run of strong steers from Paul Caunter of Sherford
saw Pure Limousin’s all around the 650kg mark to 207 and 206ppk (x2) and realising to £1358. South Devon steers again
from Paul Caunter rose to 198ppk and £1275 and Messrs Ayre of Black Dog sold the better of several decent Devon bred
prime cattle with their 628kg steer selling for 196ppk and £1227. No real stars in the barren cow pens although neat
Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cows did see 112ppk for James Hastie of Wiveliscombe and a 668kg red Limousin cow
from Harry Davis of Chagford ran to 109ppk and £724. Further Hereford cows worthy of a mention included ones at
105ppk (£695) from Miles and Gail Fursdon of Widecombe in the Moor whilst best dairy type cows sold to 110ppk and £694 for Steve Loud of Farway with a Holstein Friesian.
62 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203
Prime Lambs to £110 & 220ppk Cull Ewes to £108.50 & Rams to £124
Numbers and trade holding up well for the time of the year with just shy of 1000 lambs selling to a top of £110 & 220ppk
with the average levelling at 196ppk back just 8p on the week. Seven
pens over £100 with Derek Arnold of Marchard Road dominating the
top prices with his tremendous run of mainly Texel and Berrichon
crosses seeing the best 50kg more Texel types making £110 or a sale
topping 220ppk as well as 52kg Berrichons at £105, 48kgs at £102 and
49kgs at £97.50. Emily Pearse of Colebrook had 54kg Suffolk crosses
at £106 closely followed by similar from Keith Pook of Galmpton at
£102.50 and both John Simmons of Poltimore and FH Chave of
Wellington had overweights at £100. Other overweights slightly
harder to place as the catering trade gets the shakes and dependant
on quality as they traded from £89 to £99. More 48-52kgs from £92
to £97 as 47kgs peaked at £94.80 for the Vennelle Partnership of
Down St Mary, 46kgs to £93.20 for Mark Harvey of Slapton and 45kgs
rose to £90.50 for David Churchill of Axminster. A super pen of 43kg
Beltex types from Keith Milton of Pennymoor made £90 (209ppk) and
David Churchill’s Beltex beauties at 40kgs made £85.50 (214ppk).
Very few lighter weight lambs trading just under £2 per kilo and lean lambs of all weights often in the 180’s pence per kilo whilst the SQQ was back 8p on last week at 196ppk.
714 cull sheep were in general maybe just a pound or two less on the week with the top price ewes being Blueface
Leicester’s from Dick Montague of Highampton at £108.50 followed by Farms for City Children of Winkleigh at £107 and
plenty of other heavy crossbred ewes often £92 to £98 with countless pens of tidy crossbred ewes in varying condition in
the £80’s. Dorset’s often in the £80’s and best of the Mules to £88 for a super single with several pens of good mules
around the £80 mark. Hill ewes out in force again today and maybe a pound or so less on the week as last weeks buyers
of the lighter ewes seemed more hesitant this week which tells a story! A few tups forward were a very strong trade with
a few sought as cheap sweepers, these reach £124 for a donkey of a Dorset from Uprising Properties of Ashill followed
by Gavin Abraham of Dartmouth with his Charollais at £115 as Harry Davis of Chagford had a smart Cheviot at £101.50 and David Helmer of Loddiswell sold his at £101. Culls averaged £68, up £4 on the week due mainly to quality.

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg
Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at
£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is
just a penny better at 170ppk.
367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS
A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes
were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey
Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for
similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as
mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of
Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to
£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very
few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty
Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull
sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.
