Auction Focus 2015Following another strong year of specialist auctions, we are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to three exciting Spring sales and a surprising Autumn season.

2014 saw excellent results across the board for Antique Tech-nology, Toys and Photographica. In the following pages you will find a selection of our past and present highlights.

Of particular note were instru-ments of surveying, navigation and astronomy, such as the rare rosewood sea quadrant by royal instrument maker

George Adams which fetched Euro 17.700 / US$ 24,300 in our May auction (Lot 118) and the imposing tellurium by Jan Fekl of Prague which brought Euro 8.600 / US$ 12,000 (Lot 167).

Mechanical music instruments of the early 19th century also performed well, with a fine silver and micro-mosaic musical snuff box bringing Euro 17.200 / US$ 23,600 (Lot 467) and

an 18-carat gold ‘sur-plateau’ snuff box by Jean-Georges Reymond Euro 25.000 / US$ 34,500 (Lot 507).

auction included a very rare chalk-disc “electromotograph” telephone receiver, patented

by Thomas Edison in 1877, for Euro 29.500 / US$ 40,000 (Lot 42). In our November 2014 auction an 1862 pre-pat-ent prototype ‘Michaela’ stenography machine fetched Euro 14.750 / US$ 18,500 (Lot 264) and an attractive example of the sought-after Fitch Type Writer of 1891 brought almost Euro 24.600 / US$ 30,700 (Lot 277).

An historic private collection of musical boxes and self-playing instruments showcased muse-um-quality pieces like the magnificent musi-cal escritoire for Euro 30.300 / US$ 41,500 (Lot 435) and a rare chocolate-dispensing “Bôite à Musique de Gare” for Euro 27.800 / US$ 38,000 (Lot 476).Landmarks of communication in last May’s

18th Century British instrument- maker Edmund Culpeper brought the science of microscopy to a wider public by developing a simplified tri-pod microscope. Offered at auction is a superb example of an English Culpeper- type microscope of circa 1735, with shagreen-covered tube, original lacquer and triangular oak case. Culpeper’s instruments were visually stunning and comparatively

The interest in tin toy motorcycles, already on the rise in 2013, continued throughout our 2014 auctions, with vehicles by Nuremberg makers Wilhelm Krauss and Johann Distler proving especially popular.

Contemporary automata attracted international interest, even making news headlines when a controversial mechanical por-trait of Russian president Vladimir Putin by Christian Bailly sold for almost Euro 37.000 / US$ 46,500 in November 2014

Our two specialist Photographica auctions presented fresh-to-the-market examples of historic antique cameras, classic cameras, rare lenses and accessories. The »photokina« auction in September achieved a 92 % sold rate, with rare stereoscopic viewers, cameras and ‘wood and brass’ cameras in particular surpassing their pre-sale estimates and reserves quite signifi-cantly.

Boutique Fantasque

The 19th century is considered by many to be the ‘Golden Age’ of automata. This fantastical piece by Roullet et Decamps of Paris represents a winged clown teasing a papier-mâché moon with a beetle on a string. The personification of the moon, a popu-lar theme in French culture, inspired illusionist and film-maker Georges Méliès to produce “Le Voyage dans la Lune” in 1902.

The four-rotor »Enigma Mod. K« ciphering machine is one of the iconic images of the 2nd world war. In fact, it was developed by Berlin engineer Dr. Arthur Scher-bius more than 15 years before the outbreak of WWII and considered so complex that it could produce over 22 billion code combinations without a single repetition. Enigma machines have been in the news again with the release of the 2015 thriller “The Imitation Game” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as British mathematician Alan Turing … although it was actually Polish cryptologist Marian Rejewski who played a far greater role in cracking the Enigma code.

The Name’s Bond... James Bond

The 1964 film “Goldfinger” marked Sean Connery’s third appearance as British MI6 agent James Bond and has been described as “the peak of the series”.

This pair of Bausch & Lomb binoculars , consigned by the family of the film’s art director Michael White,played its own very iconic role in the

scene where Bond prevents Auric Gold-finger from winning a rigged game of gin rummy by distracting his assistant Jill Masterton on the hotel balcony. “Goldfinger” was also significant for introducing the ingenious gadgets and technology which feature in all the later films, leading a Times critic to write: “All the devices are infinitely sophisti-cated, and so is the film”.
