Auction Focus 2015 Following another strong year of specialist auctions, we are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to three exciting Spring sales and a surprising Autumn season. 2014 saw excellent results across the board for Antique Tech- nology, Toys and Photographica. In the following pages you will find a selection of our past and present highlights. Of particular note were instru- ments of surveying, navigation and astronomy, such as the rare rosewood sea quadrant by royal instrument maker George Adams which fetched Euro 17.700 / US$ 24,300 in our May auction (Lot 118) and the imposing tellurium by Jan Fekl of Prague which brought Euro 8.600 / US$ 12,000 (Lot 167). Mechanical music instruments of the early 19th century also performed well, with a fine silver and micro-mosaic musical snuff box bringing Euro 17.200 / US$ 23,600 (Lot 467) and an 18-carat gold ‘sur-plateau’ snuff box by Jean-Georges Reymond Euro 25.000 / US$ 34,500 (Lot 507). auction included a very rare chalk-disc “electromotograph” telephone receiver, patented by Thomas Edison in 1877, for Euro 29.500 / US$ 40,000 (Lot 42). In our November 2014 auction an 1862 pre-pat- ent prototype ‘Michaela’ stenography machine fetched Euro 14.750 / US$ 18,500 (Lot 264) and an attractive example of the sought-after Fitch Type Writer of 1891 brought almost Euro 24.600 / US$ 30,700 (Lot 277). An historic private collection of musical boxes and self-playing instruments showcased muse- um-quality pieces like the magnificent musi- cal escritoire for Euro 30.300 / US$ 41,500 (Lot 435) and a rare chocolate-dispensing “Bôite à Musique de Gare” for Euro 27.800 / US$ 38,000 (Lot 476). Landmarks of communication in last May’s Close Focus 18th Century British instrument- maker Edmund Culpeper brought the science of microscopy to a wider public by developing a simplified tri- pod microscope. Offered at auction is a superb example of an English Culpeper-type microscope of circa 1735, with shagreen-covered tube, original lacquer and triangular oak case.
