The MicrosoftThe Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003 Always- Exchange Server 2003 Always-Up-To-Date (AUTD) Solution facilitates “the connected enterprise.” It gives subscribers a simple way to coordinate messages, appointments, and contacts between desktop computers and remote devices.

A new level of convenience for subscribers

The AUTD service is the most requested feature from users of Windows Mobile™ who are connected with Exchange Server 2003. That’s because it provides an “always-on” experience for end users. The service leverages the native capabilities of Windows Mobile-based devices to directly synchronize a device’s Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts list with an Exchange server.

AUTD eliminates the need for manual synchronization. When the server receives a new message or other PIM information—such as an appointment or contact information that has been added, changed, or deleted—the system sends a notification to the device, which automatically initiates background synchronization with the Exchange server.

End user benefits

Automatic synchronization is the most efficient way for remote users to coordinate their messages, appointments, and contact information:

• Saves time because it ensures that • Saves time because it ensures that messages and data are always up-to-date

• Improves battery life of mobile devices

• Optimizes the enterprise’s data plan usage

• Ideal solution for subscribers with critical, but infrequent messages

Mobile operator benefits

For mobile operators, the AUTD solution provides a natural entry point into the enterprise market:

• Attracts enterprises that want to maximize workforce productivity

• Adds value as best-of-breed service branded with mobile operator’s identity

• Allows mobile operator to price the service based on value rather than data load

• Enhances average revenue per user

• Creates opportunities for additional business, such as device provisioning and hosted messaging solutions

• Increases efficiency of data network

Always-Up-To-Date functionality allows users to receive e-mail and other business information continuously over the entire range of devices, from laptops to browser-based phones. It’s easy to implement—no middleware required—and will increase enterprise customers’ data traffic and demand for high-end devices.

Windows Mobile puts the power of Windows® operating system software into single Pocket PC and Smartphone devices, helping you do more with the people and things that matter. The simple inter-face, distinctive icons, and powerful software keep the experience consistent, easy, and effective. And, depending on the Windows Mobile-based device or additional products and services selected, you can send e-mail and instant messages, and access the Web or corporate network from virtually anywhere.

An extensible software platform for the development and delivery of mobile solutions, Windows Mobile software helps mobile operators increase average revenue per user as well as subscriber loyalty, while offering customers a personal and powerful mobile experience.

Simple setup and service

The AUTD solution works over all types of operator data networks. It’s extremely easy to install and configure. Server-side handling of all synchronization logic, including conflict resolution, dramatically simplifies the client software. That means initial end-user customer service requirements are relatively light.

Setting up the AUTD solution is easy for the IT professional, as well. However, for many enterprises, independent hosting is not cost effective. That’s why we created the MSN® SMS Aggregation Service. This service aggregates thousands of Exchange relationships for out-of-the-box implementations. The MSN SMS Aggregation Service allows a mobile operator to provide a consistent customer support model and to leverage Exchange enterprise sales and deployment recommendations. For example, the mobile operator can increase profit margins by offering the AUTD service as a subscription or add it to a bundled premium data plan for mobile messaging solutions.

Key technical features:

• Built-in support in Exchange Server works without requiring any extra servers or desktop redirectors.

• Transfer of data occurs over a secure connection directly between the mobile device and the server. Data is not stored on any intermediary servers on the network.

• Optimization for efficient use of low-bandwidth, high-latency networks.

• Synchronization support for multiple e-mail folders.

• Use of standard technologies such as HTTPS networking and XML data format.

• Support for a variety of underlying network technologies, including GPRS, CDMA, and 802.11.

• Wireless Binary XML (WBXML) support for compressed transmission of XML elements.

• Support for device-initiated synchronization—manual, scheduled, or in response to a notification from the server.

• Support for download of e-mail attachments—automatic, on-demand, or manual.

• Time limits on device-side storage of e-mail and calendar items to reduce memory usage.

• Forwarding and replying to e-mail directly from the server, without having to download and then upload the message.

• Support for recovery from communications errors.

• Synchronization of multiple mobile devices to the same server data.
