Exchange Student Newsletter Summer 2010 Exchange Student Orientation The mandatory Orientation for all exchange students will be held on Tuesday September 7th at 1:00pm in 101 Azrieli Theatre. All new exchange students are expected to attend this orientation. The International Student services Office (ISSO) The International Student Services Office (ISSO) is the university body dedicated to the support and well being of the international and exchange student community at Carleton University. It is important that all exchange students stay connected to the ISSO throughout their stay at Carleton by checking the ISSO website and their Carleton Connect e-mail account regularly. To learn more about upcoming activities for new students visit www.carleton.ca/isso/new-students/ University Health Insurance News The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), is a mandatory health insurance plan for exchange students. Exchange students will be charged the UHIP premium of $240 for coverage if staying for only one term and $504 for coverage if staying for both fall and winter terms. Charges will be applied to students’ student account. For information on how to pay your UHIP fees and settle your student account visit www.carleton.ca/ finance/student-accounts-receivable/fee-payment/ payment-methods/ . Note that there are deadlines for students to settle their student accounts by, read additional information at www.carleton.ca/finance/ student-accounts-receivable/dates-deadlines/. All students must pick up their UHIP card within 30 days of the beginning of the academic year/term at the ISSO to ensure UHIP enrollment. For information on UHIP coverage, visit www.uhip.ca Please note that UHIP does not cover dental costs and/or prescription medications. Students can get this type of insurance through the Carleton Student Association (CUSA), for more information visit www.cusaonline.com Exchange Student Reception Join us on Wednesday September 8th at 4pm in the Tory building foyer (3rd floor), for a reception to welcome all exchange students visiting Carleton this year. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet other exchange students, mingle with ISSO staff and interact with members of the Carleton Exchange Club, a student club run by Carleton students that have been on exchange. Refreshments will be served. Immigration Support Exchange students are only required to have a Study Permit to study in Canada if their period of study is six months or more. If an exchange student would like to work on campus, a study permit is required, even if the student will be here for just one term. Students applying for their Study Permit must apply before they depart to come to Canada. This should be done through the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in their region. Please allow at least two months for this process, but note that it can take longer depending on where you live. For further details visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website www.cic.gc.ca/english/ information/applications/student.asp . Students may also require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. Temporary Resident Visas may be issued for a single entry, or for multiple entries. A single entry visa allows you to enter Canada only once.
