What is a GC?

A GC is a Global CatalogServer. A GC holds a fullset of attributes for thedomain in which itresides and a subset ofattributes for all objectsin the Active DirectoryForest.05

What is DDNS and whydo I need it?

Dynamic DNS (describedin RFC 2136) allowsservers to dynamicallyupdate and createrecords in DNS. DynamicDNS is used by theExchange server tocreate server recordsand other entries usedby the Exchange Serversfor things like messagerouting. In a simpleExchange organization,DDNS is not strictlynecessary, but makesadministration mucheasier.

Can I run Exchange2000 with an ADinfrastructure withWindows 2003 DC’s?

I’m running Exchange5.5 and would like toupgrade to Exchange2003. Can I upgradedirectly?

No. The only supportedupgrade in place is fromExchange 2000 SP3 orlater. You would need tofirst upgrade yourExchange 5.5 server toat least Exchange 2000SP3 and then upgrade inplace to Exchange 2003.Another option is toexmerge out yourcurrent users andexmerge them into anExchange 2003 server.And the only other optionis called the leap frogmigration. You configurethe Active DirectoryConnector (ADC) forExchange 2003 betweenthe Active Directory andExchange 5.5 DirectoryService. Install a newExchange 2003 serverinto the enterprise and



move the Exchange 5.5users to Exchange 2003.17

Can I install Exchange2003 on Windows 2000server?

Yes, but Windows 2000must have SP3 loadedfirst.18

Can I rename or movethe default groupscreated by Exchangeduring domainprep andforestprep?

Only if you want tohorribly break yourExchange installation.

The minimum practicalhardware requirementsin our experience are1.25 times the diskspace one would allocateunder Exchange 2000,1GB RAM (4GB minimumif the Exchange serveralso serves any otherfunction) and the fastestprocessor(s) you canafford.

Am I better off with onereally fast processor ortwo somewhat slowerprocessors?

You’re better off withtwo really fastprocessors. But, with allother things being equal,two processors arebetter than one withExchange 2003. In mostinstances, a 2-processormachine would bepreferable.

No. Only a single E2K3organization can existwithin a single forest.Delegation ofadministration withinthe organization can beaccomplished using OUsin AD andAdministrative/ RoutingGroups in the Exchangesystem manager.

How do I configure theRecovery StorageGroup?

In Exchange 2003, thereis a new feature calledthe “Recovery StorageGroup” (RSG). This is aspecial instance of ESE(a 5th instance) whichcan be spun up toprovide:a. Item/Folder/Mailboxlevel restore without theneed for a spare serverb. “Dial tone” (blankmailbox) support if youlose a database and needto get the users quicklyup and running forsend/receive

To create the RSG, gointo Exchange 2003 ESM,right-click on your serverobject and choose tocreate a new RecoveryStorage Group.Once the RSG exists, youcan add a database to it(any MDB from anyStorage Group from anyserver inside the sameAdmin Group). Then, useNTBackup or similar torestore a backup into theRSG. Now, you can useExMerge to extract thedata from the RSG andmerge it into theproduction database (forscenario a.), or you can



swap the RSG-restoreddatabase for thetemporary productiondatabase (for scenariob).

Under Exchange 5.5 Icouldn’t restore asingle mailbox without3rd party products.With Exchange 2003, isit any easier to restorea single mailbox orback up a singlemailbox?

Yes and no. UnderExchange 2003, amailbox is not deletedimmediately when aWindows account isdeleted. Althoughrestores have beengreatly improved withthe new RecoveryStorage Group (RSG) andthe Volume Shadow CopyService, there is no builtin mechanism forbacking up a singleExchange mailbox. Thiswould still require a 3rdparty brick level backuputility.06

Can I back up the EXIFSdrive using NT Backupor another backupapplication?

You can, but you will besad. Do NOT back up theEXIFS drive of anExchange 2003 server. Itcan result in messagesand attachments beinginaccessible via theOutlook client.

How can I prevent a



user from sending andreceiving Internet mail?

Follow the steps outlinedbelow:

1. Create a groupcalled InternalOnly.

2. Create a recipientpolicy that gives them afake SMTP address. [email protected]. Leavethe X400 address aloneso they can receiveinternal mail.

3. Drill down throughRouting Groups > GroupName > Connectors >SMTP internetconnector(s), choose itsproperties. Choose theDelivery Restrictionstab, and under “reject”,add this group. Do thisfor each connector.

4. Follow the steps inKB277872, regardingConnector Restrictions.[Now they can't use theSMTP connector(s) tosend external mail]08

Servers?

No, the property sheetsof the 2003 servers willappear as read-only. Youshould avoid usingExchange 2000 ESM inenvironments whereExchange 2003 isinstalled. Not only willyou not be able to accessnew Exchange 2003features, but there isalso the risk of damageto new objects thatExchange 2000 does notunderstand. If you mustcontinue to useExchange 2000 ESM,apply the latestExchange 2000 SP3 roll-up to your Adminworkstation(s) –http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E247C80E-8AFA-4C2A-96B3-F46D1808C790&displaylang=en

The roll-up includessupport for themsExchMinAdminVersionattribute (also known asESM versioning).Essentially, eachExchange object in theAD is stamped with aminimum admin version.If ESM detects that thedata value is greaterthan the version of ESMrunning, it will not allowedits to that object.

Probably nothing. Amailbox will not appearunder Mailbox Store |Mailboxes until eithersomeone has logged intothe mailbox or themailbox has received amail message. Someadministrators send awelcome message to amailbox shortly after ithas been created, whichwould cause it to appear.

‘Receive as’ allows auser object to open amailbox. ‘Send as’allows a user to send outa mail message as themailbox that has beenopened.

CookieAuthenticationTimeoutOutlook Web Access usercredentials are nowstored in a cookie. Whenthe user logs out ofOutlook Web Access, thecookie is cleared and isno longer valid forauthentication.Additionally, by defaultthe cookie is set toexpire automaticallyafter 20 minutes of userinactivity.



The automatic timeoutis valuable for keeping auser’s account securefrom unauthorizedaccess. Although thistimeout does notcompletely eliminate thepossibility that anunauthorized user mightaccess an account if anOutlook Web Accesssession is accidentallyleft running on a publiccomputer, it greatlyreduces this risk.

Note: CookieAuthentication Timeoutis available for the richexperience version ofOutlook Web Accessonly.

The inactivity timeoutvalue can be configuredby an administrator tomatch the security needsof your organization.

Note: The default valuefor the cookie timeoutis 10 minutes. If youwant to set this value tosomething other than10 minutes, you mustmodify the registrysettings on the server.Warning This sectioncontains informationabout editing theregistry. Before youedit the registry, makesure you understandhow to restore it if aproblem occurs. To set theOutlook WebAccess cookie



timeout value1. Click Start, clickRun, and type Regedit inthe box next to Open.Click OK.

2. Navigate to thefollowing registry key:HKey_local_machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWeb\OWA\

3. Create a newDword value and name itKeyInterval.

4. Right-click theKeyInterval Dword valueand click Modify.

5. In the Basewindow, click the buttonnext to Decimal.

6. In the Value Datafield, enter a value (inminutes) between 1 and1440.

7. Click OK.
