That’s all you have to do to open a file created in a previous version. You’re ready to get to work.But before you do, here are a few notes about using the Microsoft Office Button, located in the upper‐left corner of the window. Clicking it opens a menu showing the same commands you’ve used in the past to open and save your workbooks.•This menu is packed with useful items. For example, here is where you’ll find the program settings that control things like turning the R1C1 reference style on or off, or showing the Formula Bar in the program window Click Excel Options at the bottom of the menu toFormula Bar in the program window. Click Excel Options at the bottom of the menu to access the options.•In previous versions of Excel, you could set such options in the Options dialog box, opened from the Toolsmenu. Now many of those options are here, where they are more visible and conveniently close at hand when you start work on old files or new ones.

Worksheets are like pages in a document in the sense that they are where you enter your text and numbers. Worksheets are also sometimes called “spreadsheets.”

For example, you might have sheet tabs called January, February, and March for budgets or student grades for those months, or Northcoast and Westcoast for sales regions, and so on.

Tips: • You can add worksheets if you need more than three. Or if you don’t need as many as
three, you can delete one or two (but you don’t have to). • You can also use keyboard shortcuts to move between sheets.

More about columns: The first 26 columns are labeled with the letters from A through Z. Each worksheet contains 16,384 columns in all, so after Z the letters begin again in pairs, AA through AZ. After AZ, the letter pairs start again with columns BA through BZ, and so on, until all 16,384 columns have alphabetical headings, ending at XFD.

Tip: To enter today’s date, press CTRL and the semicolon (;) together. To enter the current time, press CTRL and SHIFT and the semicolon all at once.

More about AutoComplete:If the first few letters you type in a cell match an entry you’ve already made in that column, Excel will fill in the remaining characters for you. Just press ENTER when you see them added. AutoComplete works for text or for text with numbers. It does not work for numbers only, for dates, or for times.
More about AutoFill:With AutoFill, you can quickly enter the months of the year, the days of the week, multiples , y q y y , y , pof 2 or 3, or other data in a series. What new or changed information might necessitate additional columns or rows? Your worksheet might need a new Order ID column to follow the Date column. Or maybe you learn that Buchanan, Suyama, or Peacock made more sales than you knew. More on step 1:So for example, if you want an Order ID column between columns B and C, you’d click a cell in column C, to the right of where you want the new column to go.

Using Page Layout view helps you avoid some of the somersaults you went through to preview worksheets in earlier versions of Excel. For example, did you ever switch back and forth repeatedly between Print Preview and Normal view, adjusting your worksheet to get things right before printing? Or perhaps it took you several tries before your worksheets finally printed the way you wanted them to. Those days are gone.

In step 2, you could select another chart type besides a column chart. Column charts, however, are commonly used to compare items. So the column chart is a good choice for getting across the information you want.

Tip: When you rest the pointer over any chart type, a ScreenTip displays the chart type name. The ScreenTip also provides a description of the chart type and gives you information about when to use each one.

During step 4, you’ll see that Chart (linked to Excel data) is selected. That ensures that any changes to the chart in Excel will automatically be made to the chart in PowerPoint. This means that you don’t have to worry if chart data changes after you add the chart to PowerPoint.
