General Requirements for Excavation Pits
When designing and constructing excavation pits, complex boundary conditions and performance requirements need to be taken into account.
Boundary Conditions
1 Soil ConditionsDifficult soil conditions (stratigraphy, obstructions, existing slopes etc.) require careful design and planning and an appropriate selection of the solution.
2 Ground waterProtection of the ground water against pollution and prevention of water ingress into the excavation pits.
3 Plot boundariesNeighboring plots and existing rights of way require particular care when designing the support structure and the construction sequence.
4 Existing BuildingsAdjacent buildings must not be damaged by the works. Particularly the serviceability of the existing building foundations must not be compromised, which often requires additional support and underpinning to secure them.
5 Underground servicesUnderground services such as sewage and water pipes, power lines and communication cables must remain in service, especially in densely populated areas such as city centers.
6 TrafficTraffic flow should be hampered as little as possible and existing traffic infrastructure needs to be protected against damage.
7 Varying excavation depthsSome projects require excavation depths to vary across the site for a range of solutions may be required.
Design and Execution Planning
Requirements
 minimal impact on existing structures
 no disturbance to running operations
 optimum use of plot space
integration of the foundation system into the overall structure
minimal deflections even for deep excavation pits
 conformity to environmental standards
efficient construction with optimum material utilization and minimal waste
 monitoring with detailed records
close cooperation between owner, designer and foundation specialist
