Introduction

The material within this portfolio relates to: Unit 01 – Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief This portfolio is designed to demonstrate the types of evidence that could be produced for Unit 01 – Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief for the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Studies: Interactive Media. It’s designed to provide guidance on how a portfolio could look, rather than being prescriptive. Evidence may be submitted in a variety of forms, in this example there are written accounts and visual evidence. Where the candidate has provided visual evidence (for example, screen grabs, copies of research), this has been clearly annotated to give context as to why it has been included. Each piece of evidence has been presented with the assessment criteria number detailed at the top of the page. This portfolio contains both actual evidence from a candidate and manufactured evidence produced by NCFE. External Moderator guidance has been provided for each piece of evidence relating to an assessment criterion. The guidance comments on how the evidence meets the assessment criteria and what could be improved to obtain a higher grade. The suggestions and assessment methods are not exhaustive and Teachers are encouraged to explore other methods which will support the candidate to produce the best evidence that they’re capable of for the unit. For further advice on the suitability of a particular assessment method, you can refer to the relevant Qualification Specification or contact your NCFE External Moderator. It’s strongly recommended that each unit is presented and assessed individually to allow accurate judgements about the candidate’s competence. This will also make it easier to award a grade for the unit. The work must then be internally moderated and made available for the External Moderator. It’s accepted that a piece of evidence may be presented for more than one unit. Where this is the case, the evidence must be clearly mapped to all units and assessment criteria it applies to when presented to the External Moderator. This will enable them make an accurate judgement about the candidate’s competence and overall unit grade. We would encourage the use of our Evidence and Grading Tracker document which is available on our website (www.ncfe.org.uk), however, any method which clearly records the evidence against the assesment criteria can be used.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Brief given to the candidates: I am the manager of Hayley’s Nails in Newcastle upon Tyne and I would like you to come up with some original ideas which can be developed into an interactive media product for the nail bar. The contact number of the salon is 0191 7482000 and we are based in Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. You will need to decide on an interactive media solution to meet the salon needs. The aim of the product is to promote the nail bar to new and existing customers. The multimedia product would include information such as company details, our products, the services available and contact information. The nail bar offers a range of services for hands and feet, including manicure and pedicure at competitive prices. Our target market is mainly women who want to have their nails done every couple of weeks. We have a number of competitors in Newcastle, but we offer “take-away” type service, which means clients can call in at lunchtime or on their way home. We would like to be seen as professional and customer friendly. A new company logo will need to be created and the final design needs to be fit for purpose. The interactive product will need to use a corporate style, be unique and outstanding. In terms of colour preferences, you can decide this. Whatever interactive media product you create for us it will need to be easy to maintain.

However, they are not as popular as they were due to internet downloads. Advantages:

excellent for storing data that may not change

have a long life space

better picture quality

viewed on any DVD player. Disadvantages:

limited storage space

expense

some compatibility issues

write to disc once. Interactive kiosk An interactive kiosk is a computer terminal that provides information and services to customers providing information in minimal time. Advantages:

round the clock sales

encourages self-service

increases market reach. Disadvantages:

software is limited

expensive to install kiosks

maintenance is expensive

high usage damage.

interactive notifications can be rich in content.

Disadvantages:

not all types of media are viewable on all types of phones eg flash and iPhone

can be intrusive.

Apps

An app is a mobile application that is designed to run on Android, iPhone or iPad and other tablets. These are either free or cost a small amount and are purchased through an app stores and are downloaded straight to your device. They are available for lots of everyday tasks eg buying train tickets, downloading music and checking emails etc. Advantages:

can be rich in content

some apps free of charge.

Disadvantages:

some are device specific

some are expensive.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria 1.1 – Identify the requirements of a design brief and terminology in an interactive media environment Candidate evidence: I was given the design brief by the teacher and was put into a group to have a discussion about the requirements for Hayley’s Nails. After a discussion with my peers looking at different solutions I decided that web pages would be most appropriate to promote and advertise Hayley’s Nails and to develop an interactive media product. An information kiosk media product would be useful but I don’t know where the nearest one to Hayley’s nails is and interactive television is too expensive. An app could be created but really a website would be more appropriate and it would access a larger audience than any of the other solutions that may be suitable. I looked at some general websites first of all to pick out the main points of the design and see what effects they had on the look of the site and how it helped people understand it. Then I decided to do some research into types of websites that exist for nail bars and to have a look at some of their features. By looking at these sites I found that most interactive sites included graphics, text, animation, video and/or sound files. Some websites included banners which visitors could interact with. I have to be careful about copyright and ensure that I don’t copy text/images without sourcing this and I need to consider the audience that the website is for. I could use Dreamweaver or FrontPage. I have Dreamweaver in school so I have decided to use this software and I will use fireworks and flash to develop the graphics and animations. Having looked at various websites, the most popular fonts are Arial, Verdant and Tahoma, which are all Sans serif fonts, with one site using Georgia, which is a Serif font. I looked at four nail bar websites to look at possible layouts, colours and sizes of websites and I have used this to help me produce designs for my website layout. This has also helped me choose colours and come up with a logo for the nail bar. I drew my designs by hand first and tried out different colours. I tried the colours on screen as well to see which I thought were the best. These are included at the back of the portfolio.

CONNOTATIONS OF EACH FEATURE

TYPOGRAPHY

The font used is a sans serif font. This font has been used as it makes the website look sophisticated and formal. This compliments the style. The main text is a light pink. This has been used to make the text stand out on the page with a dark background. The font colour is consistent throughout the website. This makes the website look professional and uncluttered. The font size has been changed accordingly. For example, the main text on the banner on the first page is bigger than the body text. This makes the title stand out on the page but yet the smaller text is still reader able.

LAYOUT

The page is clear and easy for the viewer to use. The editable area is also a different colour. This makes it easier for the viewer to identify the editable area. The menu bar is positioned at the top of the page. Again this is conventional and is easy for the viewer to use. The white text is not clear.

RANGE OF INTERACTIVE FEATURES

The website has roll over buttons and thumbnails. These are used to make the website seem more professional, more interactive and interesting.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Looking at the website, I think that the target audience is professional adults aged between 35 and 44, mainly women.

OVERALL STYLE

Overall, I think the website gives off a professional-quality vibe. I think this suits the nail bar.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria: 1.1 Identify the requirements of a design brief and terminology in an

interactive media environment 1.3 Explain the development of ideas 1.4 Select ideas in response to feedback, external factors and evaluation of own work 1.5 Communicate chosen ideas effectively Candidate evidence: Ideas/planning notes After looking at all four sites I decided that I liked Site 3 and this is the one I will use as a template layout. I quite liked the layout of Site 1 but thought the images made it look a bit childlike and some of the links at the top of the page are pale pink and small to see to the eye. I like the photographs of the images on Site 2 so I will find some images to place on my website. I also liked the logo from Site 3 and the different colours so I will design a logo based on this image. I liked the rollover buttons on site two so I will include these in my designs. I liked the purple from Site 3 so I will consider using this in my site. I liked the pink from Site 1 but think this is really girly so the purple is probably the better option. The second website looks strange with a black background and then a white text box in the middle. I don’t think this looks professional and it seems very dark. The third site is a bit over powering with the image of the lady in the background. The text boxes are overlaid and not clear. However, I do like the purple background and the white text and I think I will try this out for the interactive rollover buttons on the website. I liked the design of the last one, although again I think the same colour background colour would be better but I think the links down the side are clear and the text is easy to read. There is an interactive banner that scrolls across the top of the page and the links include rollovers when they are clicked on. Most of the websites use white text boxes with black text, although I think that the purple and white are really effective. The patterned background on the last website is interesting, although I feel it is quite basic and doesn’t really reflect the business. When the page loads for Site 3 there are interactive rollovers and an embedded video. My site will have three pages initially: Home page – this will be similar to Site 1 and 2 which will provide an overview of the facilities, animated banner and rollovers on the navigation bar. Page two – will be photographs of some of the nail designs. Page three – will be a contact page. Some of the sites include links to social media sites so I will consider putting some of these in. From the research I carried out, I drew some sketches of my own designs and I included these in my portfolio on pages 24-26. I produced a few different design sketches to help me decide which one would be best for Hayley’s Nails.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Candidate evidence:

What are a design brief and constraints?

A design brief is a plan given to the designer which outlines the aims, objectives and milestones of a design project. A design brief is essential and needs to be produced as it can help develop ideas and show these to the client throughout the process ensuring that they are happy with the design during the process. The brief I have been given allows me a free rein to design an interactive media product. There are some constraints as it looks like only 3 pages will be needed and I have been given the text but I will create the logo so I will need to consider these when thinking about corporate design. I will take some photographs of nails of my friends and produce a design sketch to see what they look like. I will draw the buttons and some of the elements for the web pages before I start using the software to see what the elements look like together. I have only been using Dreamweaver and fireworks for a few weeks so I hope that I can create a website which is good enough for the nail bar. The nail bar has given me a few images but I will need to source some and this may be a problem as copyright will apply to these images and I might have to get permission to use them. I decided to sketch my own plans, logo and buttons before I started and these are included at the back of the portfolio.

Assessment criteria: 1.1 Identify the requirements of a design brief and terminology in an

interactive media environment 1.2 Give examples of a range of ideas and solutions in the context of the interactive media design brief 1.3 Explain the development of ideas Candidate evidence: My Design Brief Based on the brief I was given I will create a 3 page interactive website for Hayley’s Nails which includes details of the salon, products and services that they offer and contact information. I have some text and a video that I will use and I will design the rest myself. I will keep the website simple. All the ones I have looked at are very pink! The website needs to be as simple and user friendly as possible. I have decided to use the layout from site 1 and I have decided that as it is for women that it should have a pinky/purple colour and this matches the corporate colours that Hayley provided me with. I have decided to use Segoe Print font 14 with normal leading and kerning. I will use images that I took myself of nails and polishes. I will make it interactive and include animated banner and video. Navigation will be through the navigation menu buttons which rollover. Customers will be able to fill in a form to contact us. FRONT PAGE For my first page I decided to do an introduction to the business and include a couple of images of the types of nails that can be painted at the nail bar. I will also try out an animated banner to advertise special offers. PRODUCTS For my second page I will create a page that shows some of the products that are on offer at the nail bar, eg the nail polishes, nail art and special effects we can do. Again this will use frames and will include a slideshow of images. I will have a video on this page. CONTACT US I will create a Contact Us page which will include a form for clients to fill in details to contact us with questions or to arrange appointments. I feel that this will meet the design brief as it includes the information that the nail bar gave me in the design brief, the colours are suitable for women and it is interactive. I decided to take some images myself of my own hands with painted nails so that I could use these imaged on the website. I will try them on different pages and with different colours to see which ones worked the best.

I thought the colours used in site 3 in my research stood out and had a sophisticated look to them as I wanted the bar to have an upmarket feel to it. I thought the name was clear and the combination of colours stood out.

I found this palette of colours and have tested these colour schemes, which I downloaded from the internet.

Candidate evidence:

I used the colour palette and liked this background colour.

I had a look at other colour palettes but found those shades too girly.

B57393 DB928B 69A576 AECA80 This scheme is quite bright, so I don’t think that this is the right scheme to use for my website as it might make my website hard to read. Although the colours aren’t quite right, so I will not be using these.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria 1.1 – Identify the requirements of a design brief and terminology in an interactive media environment

External Moderator commentary The candidate has been given a design brief to create an interactive media product for a nail bar. The candidate has read through the design brief and has produced evidence of meeting the design brief on pages 6–21. She has come up with various ideas to produce an interactive website for the nail bar. The candidate has carried out research into other nail bars (pages 13–16) which is good practice. The candidate has clearly identified the requirements from the design brief. The candidate has identified one possible solution, a website, after explaining well the advantages and disadvantages of other forms of interactive media, and has dismissed other solutions. Constraints have been identified in the form of technical skills and lack of images provided by the nail bar. The candidate has made connections between the design brief and ideas showing possible outcomes for the website. The candidate has included some evidence of using the correct terminology and she discussed the design brief, corporate ID, typography, font, colour and layout of the pages. She has also demonstrated some familiarity with technical language when using software. She has very briefly mentioned copyright. Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Merit To achieve a Distinction, the candidate would need to produce more detailed, creative and comprehensive evidence to meet the design brief and a range of solutions eg by producing interpretations for kiosk, interactive website and interactive media product. The candidate’s evidence would include a detailed understanding of corporate ID, the brief, typography, font, colour, layout, and for example fee setting, job costing and copyright. Greater creativity would be seen and the ability to visually assess a range of alternative solutions would be in evidence.

Assessment criteria 1.2 – Give examples of a range of ideas and solutions in the context of the interactive media design brief External Moderator commentary The candidate has identified one possible solution and has dismissed other solutions which could be used although not much detail is given of the reasons for their dismissal. Constraints have been identified in the form of technical skills and lack of images provided by the nail bar. The candidate has produced their ideas using hand-drawn sketches of buttons, the layout and colour of the website and the animated banner to see which will work. She has also shown how the colours, fonts and backgrounds might work on the website. In addition, she has included evidence of developing a logo, showing the development along with brief disadvantages of each type of solution using the unit specification. There is limited application to the specific design brief - the advantages and disadvantages being too general, although the candidate has concluded this section with a limited justification as to why a website has been used. However, the candidate has briefly explained why she has not chosen some of the other solutions eg information kiosk and interactive television.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

The work for the website shows a fairly clear, albeit predictable, direction and train of thought and the ideas are resolved without a great deal of experimentation with alternatives, even though each shows some attempts at development. Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Pass To achieve a Merit, the candidate would need to show more application of the different possible solutions to the specific design brief. The subsequent work on the website itself would need to be more specific and detailed in terms of why some of the solutions are more appropriate than others. Also needed would be a wider range of web page designs and alternatives. At this stage these could be in the form of clear visuals, rather than a fully developed website. To achieve a Distinction, the candidate would need to produce a much broader range of their own ideas. The web page designs would demonstrate creativity and originality, and show a perceptive investigation of the brief’s requirements with many alternatives suggested. Also the candidate would produce a range of ideas that would be suitable for a kiosk, interactive website, DVD in the investigatory drawings.

Assessment criteria: 1.3 Explain the development of ideas 1.5 Communicate chosen ideas effectively 1.6 Illustrate the flow of an interactive idea 1.7 Select media methods available for recording development of ideas Candidate evidence Now that I had done research I decided to sketch some designs for my website, based on the research I carried out. The image below shows drafting the layout of four different home pages. These are based on the different designs from my research and the colours used.

Having drafted these pages I think that I like the layout of the bottom left with the pink/purple background and navigation bar across the page. I think this looks professional and therefore would be good for my site.

The next thing that I drew was the sketches for the navigation bar and buttons. I couldn’t decide whether to have a bar or buttons so produced buttons first and then navigation bar.

I think that the square buttons look the most appropriate – the other shapes seem a bit strange.

I produced four different options for the navigation bar based on my research. I liked the layout of option one and the colours from option 2 so have decided to use both of these in my website.

Candidate evidence: I decided that based on my research and to make the website interactive I would include some rollover buttons and thought this would be best through the navigation bar. I drew some designs and used different colours to see which ones I liked best:

Rollover one and two were based on research but I thought this was a bit plain. I then looked at buttons and changed the rollover colours but I didn’t like the green. I then thought about using the purple rollover from site two and I liked this. I drew several designs as I thought about including images but rollover from image 6 to 7 seems to be the test and I will use words rather than images in the navigation bar.

This way the letters H and N stand out more like a logo. After discussing the logo with my tutor I decided to make it less symmetrical.

I tried out different ways of producing the logo and chose the bottom one as I think it is most effective.I used Adobe InDesign and created a number of different logos. I have tried these on the website that I have created and I have decided that I like the last one the best.

I thought that I would have the advertising banner in the header at the top right to promote the special offers, however this didn’t match my design plan so I decided that the banner would still look best on the first home page. I have chosen purple as a colour. I have to put this in yet. I have created some navigation buttons which I will change later I have used the font Segoe Print and I will try it with Avenir Medium in light grey which I chose earlier and I have included images I have manipulated. I added some buttons but don’t like these and they don’t reflect my design sketches or research. The purples are still the wrong colour. I tried different colours of the purples and pinks again to see which I thought fitted in with the overall corporate image I had developed.

Assessment criteria 1.3 – Explain the development of ideas External Moderator commentary The candidate has provided evidence to show the development of various ideas for the website; however they’ve provided limited explanations as to how these might come together as a whole and it does not demonstrate a coherent look at the website with all the elements of the design in place. She has edited images from various internet sites and she’s made some links as to why she has chosen and edited these to meet the design brief. The development of the images is limited and it would be good to explain the tools that have been used and more application as to how these are appropriate for the multimedia product. The initial sketches need to be developed into more solid drawings, or visuals, of how the site might look. The development of the website is useful, and although it would not be expected to be finished off at this stage, again the description of the development is limited and the website shows insufficient detail. A clear coherent illustration of each page, perhaps in traditional drawn form, might prove to be needed. Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Pass To achieve a Merit, the candidate would have to provide more detail of the development process and how the assets they’ve edited appropriately contribute to the overall design in meeting the design brief. The explanations need to demonstrate how the development of the ideas might come together and be resolved as a whole. To achieve a Distinction, the candidate would have to produce a much more detailed explanation of a wide range of ideas. This explanation would be supported with a more detailed explanation of how the ideas have been developed, eg each of the stages involved and the tools used to develop the ideas based on earlier research. The contribution to the website of the assets and their development, would need to demonstrate a sensitive and perceptive understanding of how these assets might enhance the product (ie the website).

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria 1.4 – Select ideas in response to feedback, external factors and evaluation of own work Candidate evidence: I asked two of the girls who sit next to me what they think of my ideas and my teacher, along with Hayley. My teacher thought the initial ideas were ok but needed to be consistent with the purple background. She also thought that the home and back buttons should also be consistent. She liked the image of the nails and she reminded me I had forgotten to include the logo. Stef, who sits next to me, said that she thought the background should be consistent and maybe the buttons should be a different colour. She also said that the purple I had coloured on the nails was untidy and not professional. Ruks, my other peer said that she thought it was great and I should look at the black text at the top of the screen. Based on the feedback I got early on I decided to use layout 4, the purple logo, the purple buttons with the white text and purple background. Hayley also asked me about copyright of the images I had used and I couldn’t get permission to use all of them from the copyright holder so I will have to remove these before the website is uploaded to the internet. I have to change the purple so it is consistent colour, include the logo, sort out the navigation buttons and look at the images I have used to make them look professional. I had a quick word with Hayley and she liked my idea of including a Flash movie in the header.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria 1.4 – Select ideas in response to feedback, external factors and evaluation of own work Candidate evidence: Based on the feedback and software we have in school I would use Macromedia fireworks to edit and create the images/buttons for my website and use Dreamweaver to create the interactive website. I will use flash to create my animated banner. I have this software available to me so I need to plan my time as the client would like this produced by the end of the month. I think that my mock-up of a web page is good but the colours do need to be consistent. The picture of the nails that I have coloured also needs to be neater. I have struggled with using Dreamweaver as I have only used it for a few weeks. I think I have met the design requirements by Hayley – the website when complete will promote her nail bar.

Assessment criteria 1.4 – Select ideas in response to feedback, external factors and evaluation of own work External Moderator commentary The candidate has received a range of feedback from Hayley, her Teacher and two of her class peers. They’ve provided feedback on the sketches and the mock up web page. The candidate has provided a limited self-evaluation based on the feedback provided, although she has identified which ideas she had intended to use. The candidate has considered several external factors including software, her own understanding of it, and how she has been affected by design requirements, eg the range of purple colours. The logo is fairly well developed as is the banner, although not completely resolved.

Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Pass

The candidates would need to show judgements (evaluations) based on critical analysis of the design ideas, the visual criteria and function by carrying out further independent investigation into their own design ideas. Showing critical understanding in the range of developments from the earlier research, through to final visuals, would show this. To achieve a Distinction, the candidate would need to make critical judgements which are based on comprehensive analysis of the broad range of original ideas they’ve come up with to meet the brief. The analysis would be balanced, demonstrating a perceptive judgement of a wider range of creative ideas, comparing and contrasting the results fully.

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

Assessment criteria 1.5 – Communicate chosen ideas effectively Candidate evidence: I have communicated my chosen ideas on pages 24-50 of this portfolio by showing my teacher, the client and two of my classmates. I have also included two hand-drawn sketches of the website, the navigation site plan and the screen shots of the development process. External Moderator commentary The candidate has communicated their chosen ideas by using sketches of the ideas and drawings using various media to develop the logo and banner and introduced other ideas using appropriate means, such as those for the background. Whilst there is some inconsistency in various stages of the process, they’ve recorded their observations, ideas and experiences in such a way as to communicate their ideas to others using a range of methods. These are effective and therefore a Merit grade can be agreed.

To achieve a Distinction, the candidate will need come up with original ideas and methods of how to communicate their ideas. The communication of the ideas will need to show a perceptive understanding of the client and others’ understanding of the design ideas and be able to communicate in more detailed form the appearance of the site and how it would function. Pages 5 – 54 show the communication of ideas. Grade awarded for this assessment criterion – Merit

Assessment criteria 1.6 – Illustrate the flow of an interactive idea Candidate evidence: I first of all carried out research into different websites and then I have used storyboards, navigation charts and screen shots to show the development of my ideas. The storyboards show my initial hand-drawn designs of the website and navigation banner (pages 24–26, 41–44 and 49–50). I have then used these hand-drawn diagrams to create my website design. External Moderator commentary The candidate has provided a storyboard to show the web pages to be developed and they’ve used a navigation chart. They’ve attempted a concept board in terms of the use of colour but this is limited. However the evidence to show the development of the ideas for the logo and the banner are appropriate. The navigation between the pages is shown but in limited form. Grade awarded for this assessment criteria – Pass

Unit 01 Originate ideas in response to an interactive media design brief (L/504/0729)

To achieve a Merit, the candidate needs to experiment showing more critical understanding with more illustrative development from the sketches before producing a website. Various different illustrations and design methods show the flow of ideas for their interactive multimedia product to design visuals, to a certain extent. To achieve a Distinction, the candidate will illustrate the flow of their interactive idea with some creativity, originality and fluency showing various methods of visual illustration and design which fully show the flow of the idea to a stage which demonstrates fully how a site might look and function.

Assessment criteria 1.7 – Select media methods available for recording development of ideas Candidate evidence: I have used several methods available for recording development of ideas. In particular I used sketches to demonstrate the animated banner that will create and a storyboard to show the webpages that will be created. The storyboard also shows the navigation between each of the pages. I used Notes to write down any technical information I have learned during the course (how to use software available). I have used sketches to help me plan my website and how the navigation between the pages will work. I have used screen shots to show the development process that I have gone through and I think this is successful and it shows how I have developed my ideas. I could have used visuals of the artwork that I would use in my website but as I found the images I thought this was a bit pointless. Visuals are good if you have to design the images you want and get someone else to draw or paint them. External Moderator commentary The candidate has chosen sketches to record the development of their ideas. The sketches are quite brief and could not be implemented by a third party. There is some evidence of navigation around the pages but the candidate could have included more precise artwork or scamps which would have enhanced their evidence. The candidate has used screen prints to test out some of the ideas. There is no real alternative to the sketches, although the candidate has very briefly talked about visuals and sketches. Grade awarded for this assessment criteria – Pass To achieve a Merit, candidates would have to provide further detail of traditional and digital methods that could be used to record the development of their ideas. To achieve a Distinction, candidates would use a variety of media methods, both traditional and digital, to creatively and inventively record the development of their ideas showing fluent flow from sketches to design drawings or visuals.
