Conceptmapsaretoolsfororganizingandrepresentingknowledge.Theyincludeconcepts, usuallyenclosedincirclesorboxesofsometype, andrelationshipsbetweenconceptsorprepositions, (indicated by a connecting line and linking word) between two concepts.Linkingwordson the line specify the relationship between the two concepts. Joe Novakdefines "concept" asa perceivedregularity inevents orobjects,or records ofevents orobjects,designatedbyalabel...
Concept maps were developed in the course of a research program conducted by JoeNovak,wherethepurposewastofollowandunderstandchangesinchildren'sknowledgeofscience.ThisprogramwasbasedonthelearningpsychologyofDavidAusubel(1963,1968,
1978).ThefundamentalideainAusubel'scognitivepsychologyisthatlearningtakesplaceby the assimilation of new conceptsandpropositions into existing concept propositionalframeworksheldby thelearner.Thequestionsometimesarisesasto theoriginofthefirstconcepts;theseareacquiredbychildrenduringtheagesofbirthtothreeyears, whentheyrecognize regularities in the worldaround them and begin to identifylanguage labels orsymbolsfortheseregularities(Macnamara,1982).Thisisaphenomenalabilitythatispartof the evolutionary heritage of all normal human beings. After age 3, newconcept andpropositional learning is mediated heavily by language, and takes place primarily by areception learning process where newmeanings are obtained by asking questions andgetting clarification of relationships between old concepts and propositions and newconcepts and propositions. This acquisition is mediated in a very important way whenconcreteexperiencesorpropsareavailable;hencetheimportanceof"hands-on"activítyforsciencelearningwithyoungchildren,butthisisalsotruewithlearnersofanyageandinanysubjectmatterdomain.Inadditiontothedistinctionbetweenthediscoverylearningprocess,where the attributes of concepts are identified autonomously by the learner, and thereceptionlearningprocess, whereattributesofconceptsaredescribedusinglanguageandtransmitted to the learner, Ausubel made the very important distinction between rotelearningandmeaningfullearning.Meaningfullearningrequiresthreeconditions:
• Thematerialtobelearnedmustbeconceptuallyclearandpresentedwithlanguage andexamplesrelatabletothelearner'spriorknowledge.Conceptmapscanbehelpfultomeetthiscondition, bothbyidentifyinglargegeneralconceptspriortoinstructioninmorespecificconcepts, andbyassistinginthesequencingoflearningtasks through progressively more explicit knowledge that can be anchored intodevelopingconceptualframeworks.
• Thelearnermustpossessrelevantpriorknowledge.Thisconditioniseasilymetafterage3 for virtuallyanydomain ofsubjectmatter, but itisnecessary tobecarefulandexplicit in building concept frameworks if one hopes to present detailed specificknowledgeinanyfieldinsubsequentlessons.Wesee,therefore,thatconditions(1)and(2)areinterrelatedandbothareimportant.
• The learner must choose to learn meaningfully. The one condition over which theteacherormentorhasonly indirectcontrolis themotivationofstudents tochoose tolearnbyattemptingtoincorpóratenewmeaningsintotheirpriorknowledge, ratherthansimply memorizing concept definitions or propositional statements or computationalprocedures.
Anotherimportantadvanceinourunderstandingoflearningisthatthehumanmemoryisnotasingle"vessel"tobefilled, butratheracomplexsetofinterrelatedmemorysystems:First, sensory memory, the part of memory that corresponds to approximately 200 to 300
seconds.Theseelementsmayhavebeenrecentlyperceivedbysensorymemory, recentlyrecovered from long-term memory, or "the result of recent mental processing". Finally,long-termmemoryormemorystoredasmeaning;itcanlastfrom20secondstodecadesandkeepsmostofthemeaningfulinformationperceivedandlearnedthroughoutlife.
While all memory systems are interdependent (and have information going in bothdirections), the most critical memory system for incorporating knowledge into long-termmemoryistheshort-termor"workingmemory."Allincominginformationisorganizedandprocessedintheworkingmemorybyinteractionwithknowledgeinlong-termmemory.Thelimitingfeaturehereisthatworkingmemorycanprocessonlyarelativelysmallnumber(fivetonine)ofpsychologicalunitsatanyonemoment.ThismeansthatrelationshipsamongtwoorthreeconceptsareaboutthelimitofworkingmemoryProcessingcapacityThereforetostructure large bodies of knowledge requires an orderly sequence of iterations betweenworkingmemoryandlong-termmemoryasnewknowledgeisbeingreceived(Anderson,1991).Webelieveoneofthereasonsconceptmappingissopowerfulforthefacilitationofmeaningfullearningisthatitservesasakindoftémplatetohelptoorganizeknowledgeandtostructureit,eventhoughthestructuremustbebuiltuppiecebypiecewithsmallunitsof
interactingconceptandpropositionalframeworks.Manylearnersandteachersaresurprisedto see how this simple tool facilitates meaningful learning and the creation of powerfulknowledgeframeworksthatnotonlypermitutilizationoftheknowledgeinnewcontexts,butalsoretentionoftheknowledgeforlongperiodsoftime(Novak,1990;Novak&Wandersee,1991). There is still relatively little known aboutmemory processes and how knowledgefinally gets incorporated into our brain, but it seems evident from diverse sources ofresearchthatourbrainworkstoorganizeknowledgeinhierarchicalframeworksandthatlearningapproachesthatfacilítatethisprocesssignificantlyenhancethelearningcapacityofalllearners.
Whileit istruethatsome studentshavemoredifficultybuildingconceptmapsand usingthese, at least early in their experience, this appears to result primarily from years ofrote-mode learning practice in school settings rather than as a result of brain structure
differencesperse. So called"learningstyle"differencesare, toalargeextent, differencesinthe patterns of learning that students have employed varying from high commitment tocontinuous rote-mode learning to almost exclusive commitment to meaningful modelearning. It is not easy to help students in the former condition to move to patterns oflearningofthelattertype.Whileconceptmapscanhelp,studentsalsoneedtobetaughtsomethingaboutbrainmechanismsandknowledgeorganization,andthisinstructionshouldaccompanytheuseofconceptmaps.
