Only Archers to Valleys: Always send with your archers:1 Worker, 1 Warrior, 1 Pikeman, and 1 Swordsman ?
Only Ballistas in NPC's wih no losses: Arch and MT should both be at least lvl 6 (see below)
Early on in the game you will need to make lvl 5 npcs so that you can farm while you army is small. But as you grow you will see that lvl 5 npcs wont be able to feed you army. And NPC's will be removed daily after initial start of servers. For this you will need to make lvl 10 npcs. Lvl 10 npcs will also be need to train your heroes so they can lvl up and eventually have a hero that can make instant anything. And a final use for lvl 10s is capping them. A lvl 10 npc has all buildings lvl 10 so when capped you will have complete many quest and not have to upgrade most buildings. The down side is that you will have to demolish buildings to make barracks and farms to sawmills/iron mines unless you want a farm city.
This method is best for npcs close to you city. And you only need one city.
Hero attack- What ever hero you want 2 take over that city
For this you will need to time each attack to land withing 5 seconds. And you will also need 5 cities or be in an alliance where your alliance members can help you cap the npc. This method s best for when

Breaking Defense
Best way to break a defense with 5k settlers is a mech wave or an archer RB.
Now that you know how the battle works you will need to set up you city. But since The cottage/barrack ratio depends on your hero attack I wont bother. But your walls do play a role on how battles go.
This is the most used type of defense in evony. Typically you are suppose to have each type of wall fortification on your wall.
5k defenses are weak to these attacks as the defending troops march to attacking opposing army depending on there speed. This forces defending troops to spread out allowing archers to pick them off 1 unit at a time.
NOTE: the fact is that this is a very nuanced game and saying 'the best way to generally tackle this generic situation is x' will never be true because very small details can very significantly alter results

Breaking Defense

The key to a Compact Defense(CD) is 0 traps abatis, and defense trebs. as this forces the enemy to fight your entire army at once instead of 1 at a time.
Best way to break a CD is a ram attack, cavsmack or phractsmack. The closer you are to the defending city the more effective you can make the hit. Adding 1 archer, 1 ballista, and 1 pult will give your attack 3 extra rounds free from fire from enemy archers. But at the same time will increase march time. So very important to know when to add them and when to hold off adding them.
CD have no traps or abatis leaving them weak to these attacks as they get in range of all troops in 1 round doing serious damage.

Capturing a Mini-Capital City (Level 12) will give you the equivalent of colonizing everything within 374 square miles of you. With a Mini-Capital City you can use Sow Discord, Draft, Disarm troops, Re-deploy Population, and levy food for EVERY SINGLE CITY within 374(22x17) square miles of you. You also get a lv 12 Farm, Ironmine, Quarry and Sawmill, with the ability to build level 12 resource fields(you need a mich script to get to lv 10, but you do not need one to upgrade to lv 11/12)

It is just out of their capabilites. This guide will give you ways to take a Historic City from attack levels from 200-500. That way, everyone is happy.

You will also need to have a War Horn applied. Penicillin will gave you 3% of your troops back. Don't waste a corsolet on these attacks. They have minimal effects. Obviously, you will need an open city slot.

With a Sub-State Capital you can use Sow Discord, Draft, Disarm troops, Re-deploy Population, and levy food for EVERY SINGLE CITY within 4356 square miles of you. You also get a lv 14 Farm, Ironmine, Quarry, and Sawmill.

Ending note: A big problem with this guide is the fact that most people have a wide range of heroes. Ex. I have HenryIV at 500 attack, and some regular hero at 400 attack. Well that's a problem of course. What you have to do next actually requires some brain power, so bear with me. Use the kill rates of the heroes and form your own battle plan. So let's say you have all 500 attack heroes, and 1 600 attack hero. Use one of the waves mentioned in the 600 attack hero section, and plan your attack accordingly.

Guide to quickly colonize 400 cities
Here is what I suggest:
Seems like an overwhelming pain, but the achievment buff reward of 10% increased item drop rate is more than worth the effort and can/should be done in the early stages of the game. With an organized system, it's really not so bad.
1. Search around your cities within a 100 mile radius or so, looking for any player cities with 2k or less prestige that are NOT in beginner status and that aren't already colonized. 99.9% of the time these are abandoned accounts. If you have the time, try to find at least 50 or so.
2. On a sheet of paper, write down the coordinates of each one you find, declaring war whenever possible (it has a 5 minute cooldown). To make things simple, you should mark a W next to each city you declare war on.3. Set up 1 or more of your cities to have a feasting hall full of junk heroes, except maybe your mayor. The more heroes the better. The reason you want junk heroes is because you don't want to risk any loyalty drop/capture of your good heroes in cases of failed attacks.4. After you have entered war status with each city, send a junk hero with 1 scout to colonize. (mark an A or something next to each city you attack to keep track) Most of the time, your colonize report will be successful with no defending troops found. The ones that fail, you should either scratch off your list or create a separate list as they can still be farmed with a small troop of warriors or archers etc. Though depending on how far away it is, it might not be worth the march time required.5. As soon as you succesfully colonize each city, immediately recall your troops to ensure they do not successfully suppress the city. If they do, you will have to wait 8 hours suppression time, plus 24 hours colony abandon time before you can hit them again. Otherwise, you can hit them every 8 hours as soon as suppression period ends.
With proper timing, you could attack each colony 5 times during the 48 hour war period. With a list of say 50 colonies, that is 250 colonies in only 2 days. That alone is enough to get you the 8% increase item drop buff. Keep in mind, after each server reset a few of the cities on your list may get deleted, just search for more if your list gets too short. Don't be discouraged if you don't see the number on your achievement list increase right away, it only seems to update for me when I reset evony. After you have gone through your list, the job only gets easier. Assuming you are still in war status, set up your attack for the first city on your list, and simply change the coordinates on the attack screen for the rest of the heroes in that city as you go down the list. Once you have confirmed which cities have "no defending troops" you can go ahead and send your good heroes too if they aren't busy.
