OUR GARDEN VISITS

10.00am at the garden

Morning tea in 2021 will be covid dependent and advised close to the date!

Car-pooling: is a very good idea.

Insurance: We are non-incorporated but do have Club insurance through our affiliation with Garden Clubs Australia Inc. Please sign the Attendance List each visit.

Garden protocol: Open Gardens SA has some simple advice on their website, but

basically the usual considerations apply in regard to not removing any plants. To identity a plant, take the person to the plant, not the plant to the person!

MARCH 12: ‘Tranquil Gardens’ at 'Abergeldie House', 548 Portrush Road, Glen Osmond. Julianne Hoffmann (and maybe the owner and the gardener) will talk with us about this quiet garden with its especially selected plantings and statuary. Morning tea: will be served @ $8.50 per person. Parking: entry by car on Portrush Road from the North. Free parking is in the rear carpark on all 3 levels, but please refrain from parking in carparks that are marked with a number plate. Then take the lift to the ground level and in to the garden.

MARCH 19: Mt Lofty Botanic Garden Nursery This is the ideal time to plant – the soil is warm and we should have had the opening rains. Come along to buy from the extensive and very healthy collection of propagated and potted plants. Please go the Nursery if you are buying plants, and to the Lower Car Park if you would like to wander the beautiful Autumn gardens. After your plant purchases drive down to the Lower Car Park to check out the Gardens. Parking for Nursery: come to the Lambert Road entry, turn immediately right to the Trade Road, take this road and follow it around and park at the Nursery. Please leave when your selection is complete.

APRIL 2, 3, 4 Easter – ‘Sophie’s Patch’. Open Gardens SA will have superb gardens throughout 2021, but Sophie’s is listed here because so many of us ask about it, visit and want a reminder! Sophie has details on her website. https://sophiespatch.com.au

APRIL 9: ‘Auchendarroch’ garden, 17 Adelaide Rd, Mt Barker. Penny Mitchell is the head gardener and will walk us through the history and development of Wallis Family

Garden Bed, Tapestry Sunlight and Shade, Joanna’s Garden of Serenity, Heritage Rose Garden, Jemima’s Kitchen Garden, Garden Weave of Natives, Auchendarroch Flora and Fauna, Dee Dee’s Secret Garden.Morning tea: You will be able to buy morning tea at the restaurant at any time over the morning. Parking: in the large adjacent car parks at ‘Auchendarroch’.

AUGUST 13: ‘Pangarinda Botanic Garden’ at Wellington East. The native plantings across the acreage are accessed through elaborate iron gates and along wide paths. Some of our Members visited on their own in 2019/20 and it is spectacular at this time of the year. Wear comfortable shoes. Directions: Either (1) drive to Wellington and cross the ferry to Pangarinda Rd and garden signage on your left, OR (2) drive directly to Tailem Bend on the freeway and head south towards Wellington where the Pangarinda Rd and garden signage is on your right. Morning tea: at the adjacent The Hall Café on the corner of Pangarinda Road. Parking: at the gate, on the roadside.

AUGUST 27: ‘Woodland Park’, 17 Frampton Road, Wistow. Jeannette St Martins had an Open Garden in November 2019 and many of us visited this diverse, wide-horizoned garden of one of our Members. We want to go back for the hellebore, bulbs and camellias. There are brilliant sheltered areas in which to sit to admire the views and the 360° garden. Jeannette says: “My love for plants & trees and my quest to have highlight in the garden in every season has been a great challenge. I’ll keep trying, as gardening is my passion and I hope it will evolve as years go by.” Parking: in the adjacent paddock or roadside. SPRING: Neutrog order form will be emailed to you closer to the time and, if you are interested, please email Sue Smith regarding your orders and delivery - [email protected]

SEPTEMBER 24: ‘The Plantation’, 2095 Old Princes Highway, Kanmantoo. Carolyn Mills has one of the most interesting gardens one could visit: a rain-shadow climate, rocky soil, flat location amongst plantations of trees, inner and outer house garden acreage, plantings from succulents to roses, found objects – and an artist’s eye for placement and collections. Carolyn is a past winner of the Murray Bridge Garden Competition. Thank you to our Member Deb Painter for suggesting this exploration. Parking: easy roadside.

OCTOBER 8: 116 Mt Barker Rd, Stirling. Jonathan Woore’s garden circles his historic Stirling home. There are the beautiful traditional and expected hills plantings, plus a lot more. Be prepared to see an extensive and beautifully tiered space in the centre of Stirling. Just like the garden, morning tea will be a treat! Parking: not easy in this old area of Stirling, but available in the adjacent car park, and on the verge.

OCTOBER 22: ‘Hill Gully’, 551 Scott Creek Road, Scott Creek – Elizabeth Dobson & Charles Seja. Elizabeth says: “0ur 4acre garden, set within a 20acre property includes: a cutting garden, a vegetable garden, glasshouses, propagation area, ferns, and a bog garden. Around the lake deciduous trees are under-planted with spring bulbs and a winter moss garden.” Shoes with tread are a must as we wander down through the birches! Parking: 8 cars within the property, then on the roadside.

OCTOBER 29: ‘Wandilla Park’, 41 Worden Road, Mt George, Wayne Steinwedel. Wayne owns The Garden Depot at Mt Barker and hosted us there, and in his garden in 2017. He has invited us back to see his many changes at this perfect time of the year. There is considerable growth, structural alterations and expansion. This is the date that Wayne thinks you will see everything at its best. Parking: there is a long, sealed drive.

NOVEMBER 12: ‘Serenity Nursery’, 201 Mannum Road, Murray Bridge. Krystal and Tim are highly regarded and generous nursery people who welcome us to their plant and product areas. The site was a rundown lime-kiln which started as a nursery in 1990. This is the perfect time to see a nursery which is packed with plants and garden pots. Parking: up the long driveway to the car park.

NOVEMBER 26: 33 Leslie Creek Road, Mylor. One of our Members, Gisela McMichael, has moved with her family from Upper Sturt (remember visiting her immaculate garden?) to Mylor. This is a Work in Progress! Gisela sent this photo and said: “The Green Thumbs are most welcome to visit. But I do have to stress that it's a garden that's very much under development. We’ve been busy creating paths, cutting down unwanted trees and clearing weeds. The spot around the lower lake should look inviting enough though. We're going to plant many Japanese maples at the back of the lake as well as other great deciduous trees. We're also working on our wintercreek, collecting lots of rocks to stop soil erosion. So if you think the members don't mind seeing the garden in the development phase then I'd be very happy for you to visit.” See you there! Parking: mainly up the long driveway, but a few on the roadside.
