Elaborating on evidence
• Reasons• Counterarguments• Multiple Perspectives
ClaimsClaims are not just opinions. A claim tells what you think is true about a topic based on your knowledge and your research.
ReasonsA reason tells why. A
reason makes someone
care and tells the
importance of the claim and
the argument.
CounterargumentsEvery argument has a
counterargument, which is the
argument adopted by the opposing
side.
Counterarguments
Counterarguments allow you to complicate and elevate your thinking
• Rather than acting like another side of your argument does not exist, you address it and “debunk” it.
• Presenting the other side and then “tearing it apart” can often be a very effective strategy.
• Conceding to some of your opposition’s concerns can demonstrate respect for their opinion.
Multiple PerspectivesConsider how an aspect of the
argument may be viewed by
someone from another culture,
age group, country, area of
expertise
Multiple Perspectives
Addressing other perspectives demonstrates your ability as a writer by showing that you have researched and considered you argument from multiple perspectives in order to come to an informed decision
Assessing the Argument
Go back over each point of evidence & elaboration & ask whether it supports the claim. If a piece of evidence does not support the claim, the argument needs attention in one of these areas
– The claim needs revision– Different evidence is needed– The discussion of evidence needs
revision

AssignmentBuild upon the lesson you created in Module 19 to consider how to elaborate on evidence to form an effective argument.
Lesson Title: Learning Targets/Objectives Generate a claim based on your topic
Elaborate on evidence through reasoning Identify 2 examples of that support your claim and give reasons
Address counter-arguments Identify 1 examples of a counterargument and explain its significance to your argument
Present arguments in terms of multiple perspectives Consider one alternative perspective and discuss its importance to the argument
Differentiation of InstructionDescribe how you differentiate instruction for 2 levels of ability and/or language levels.
Success Criteria/ Assessment Strategies
Please upload your work to Drop Box in two locations.
