CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

We are bringing together members from the Chinese and Malay chambers and representatives from SBF, IE Singapore, and SPRING for our inter-ethnic Deepavali Night Gala event on 26th November. President Halimah Yacob is our guest-of-honour. The event showcases the unity among the various ethnic groups in Singapore.

Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat recently spoke on the importance of continuously acquiring and developing skills and capabilities in tandem with the changing nature of work. I urge all members to fully uitilise the SkillsFuture initiatives rolled out by the Government.

We held a successful conference that helped delegates gain a better understanding of doing business in India. Member of Parliament Mr Vikram Nair commended SICCI for helping the Singapore Indian business community explore new avenues of growth.

Business delegates from Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala recently visited the Chamber to exchange business ideas, network and seek mutual cooperation in trade and investment. Our members from various industries were given the opportunity to present their business profiles and network.

We are collaborating with NTU on the benefits of technology and the skills needed to be ready for the future economy. Members can use cutting edge technology to improve their work processes, increase productivity and save costs.

India and ASEAN are celebrating 25 years of strategic partnership. To commemorate this partnership, the Government of India is holding an India-ASEAN Dialogue in Singapore in January 2018. SICCI is a supporting partner of this event which was last hosted in Singapore 10 years ago. We hope that you would participate and make this event a grand success.

Wishing you success in all your endeavours.

Members should develop new skills and capabilities to be ready for the future economy.

COVER STORY

Addressing the business community, government agencies, and trade associations and chambers, Mr Heng said that amid the changes and talk on the future economy, there are continued growth opportunities with Asia leading the global growth outlook.

“Everyone has a stake in the future of our economy; everyone has a critical role to play, and everyone has to act as one,” he said.

“At the national level, the Government, SBF as the apex business chamber, and our unions’ role is to work on the conditions for growth and catalyse partnerships and capability development.

“At the industry level, our Trade Associations and Chambers (TACs) must lead sector-wide initiatives and seek shared solutions for their members,” he added.

Transformation at all levelsMr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Finance and Chairman of the Future Economy Council delivered a keynote address on 1st November at the inaugural Future Economy Conference and Exhibition organized by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) at the Marina Sands Expo and Convention Centre. SICCI was a supporting partner of the conference.

A special focus of the 2-day conference was on the Industry Transformation Maps (ITMs). Consultation clinics were helmed by government agencies and TACs deeply involved in implementing the ITMs. Through these consultation clinics, businesses learned how they can become future-ready by understanding their industry’s transformation plan better, how they can transform and what support and assistance are available.

Said Mr Heng, “This conference is a great example of one of the ways in which SBF and TACs can play a leadership role. SBF and the TACs in particular must play a leadership role to drive initiatives that will level up the sectors and create value for all their members.”

Recently, thirty-one Singapore TACs and business groups came together to form the TAC Compact.

COVER STORY

Welcoming such a move, Mr Heng said, “As a stronger enabler of the business community, the TAC Compact can better mobilise support for collective ideas, resources and efforts to navigate complex business challenges in a collaborative manner. I encourage business leaders to lend your support and expertise to these Issues Committees and our TACs’ Councils.”

The conference also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Intent between SBF and IMDA.

SBF and IMDA will collaborate to engage trade associations, business chambers and businesses to help enable digital adoption and transformation. The partnership will facilitate, identify and recommend programmes and initiatives to assist the Digitalisation Issues Committee.

SICCI Chairman Dr R Theyvendran sits on the committee that aims to drive digital adoption and transformation across the Singapore business community.

SkillsFuture

Mr Heng also spoke on the importance of continuously acquiring and developing skills and capabilities in tandem with the changing nature of work.

He said, “We are continually building upon our SkillsFuture initiatives, to support individuals to reskill and upskill. Individuals should make the most of SkillsFuture, as well as learning opportunities elsewhere, to build up their relevance and confidence.”

Mr Heng emphasized that the future economy called for transformation at all levels and added, ‘This transformation is a national effort that requires the active support of leaders from SBF and our industry bodies, along with our companies and workers. I hope many of you will come forth to lend your strengths and support. Let us partner across all levels and strengthen these interwoven networks to transform our economy together.”

The conference also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Intent between SBF and IMDA.

Opportunities in Maharahstra The Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) held the Chief Minister Lecture in September supported by the High Commission of India.

Mr Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Maharashtra shared his views on ‘Infrastructure-led Growth: Maharashtra – India’s Engine of Development’. Mr Fadnavis was in Singapore as the 57th Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellow. He cited the Mumbai Metro, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and a super expressway as projects that had benefitted from the administrative streamlining by his office.

The Chief Minister focused on three key areas, namely, agriculture, ease of doing business and infrastructure development. Mr Fadnavis explained that the adoption of a “consent land acquisition” model has facilitated the smooth procurement of land for key projects. Under this model, the Maharashtra government offers farmers repatriation worth

several times that of the value of their land, leading to a conducive sale for the farmers. He also noted India’s high potential in terms of its demographic dividend and urged potential investors to collaborate with Maharashtra for mutual growth.

The questions during the active discussion ranged from solving waste and flood management, slum redevelopment and conversation of heritage sites to aviation opportunities, port development and administrative reforms to address the challenges of the state.

Chairing the session, Ambassador-at-Large Gopinath Pillai, Chairman of ISAS, shared his 30-year experience of doing business in India.

“States like Maharashtra, in particular, are taking the lead in reforming business conditions and reducing costs for investors. If Maharashtra can hasten its efforts in this regard, and if other states in India can learn from these examples, then the investment conditions in India would vastly improve”, said Ambassador Pillai. He applauded the fact that Maharashtra was perhaps the most business-friendly state of India.

Members visit NTU SICCI organized a visit recently to Nanyang Technological University (NTU) robotics and 3D printing labs to allow members to gain first-hand experience on how the latest technologies are impacting today’s businesses.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

Robotics

The EDGAR series of robots are social robots developed entirely at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. They represent a part of the global effort to revolutionize the way humans interact with robots. With robots like these, the hope is that human-robot interaction can become easier and more natural. Soon, robots will need only inputs such as human speech, contextual cues and the nuances of body language in order to understand how they can assist us. New improvements are constantly added to the EDGAR robots.

SICCI members were able to interact with Edgar 2.0 at the robotics lab. Edgar 2.0 performed at this year’s National Day Parade.

Robotics is making rapid progress where many traditional jobs will be phased out and

The Chamber would like to encourage its members to be aware and prepare themselves for these technological changes that will invade and possibly make many jobs in varied sectors such as telemarketing, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, F&B and office administration redundant.

3D Printing

3D printing creates solid parts by building up objects one layer at a time. Producing parts via this method offers many advantages over traditional manufacturing techniques. There are many applications where a 3D printer is able to deliver a design quickly, with high accuracy from a functional material. Understanding the advantages of 3D printing allows designers to make better decisions when selecting a manufacturing technique that results delivery of the optimal product.

NTU’s Singapore Centre for 3D Printing aspires to be a national centre of excellence, to consolidate cutting edge technology and research in the area of 3D printing. The centre aims to build on Nanyang Technology University’s (NTU) existing strengths and competencies in 3D printing for manufacturing and precision engineering.

3D printing allows designers to be creative

SICCI Member Mr Guna, Director, Pixbit Pte Ltd shared “Thank you for organising the NTU visit. I really enjoyed the visit and managed to interact with many potential partners in digital media domain. Looking forward to taking part in future events. The visit opened up a new door for Pixibit to collaborate with NTU in developing robotic and 3D printing based business ideas.”

Mr Anant Karnik added, “It was a wonderful trip. The visit was full of latest technology and the benefits to enterprises.”

Few may have heard of Additive Manufacturing (AM), or otherwise known as Three Dimensional Printing (3D Printing). However, that will soon change as The Economist has forecasted 3D printing to be the leading force in a third industrial revolution.

Simply put, 3D Printing is a revolutionary engineering technology that enables the fabrication of 3D parts using a computer-aided programme which adds the materials sequentially, layer by layer. Two key advantages of 3D Printing are the abilities to print highly complex models and structures, and with no material wastage and additional material cost. Therefore, 3D Printing can potentially reduce manufacturing costs, and build more environmentally friendly products.

The Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP) in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, is where the future of 3D printing takes shape. Officially launched on 17 May 2016, the Centre is supported by Singapore’s National Research Foundation and other government agencies. The Centre endeavours to be a world leader in 3D printing and a wellspring of knowledge. In addition to attracting leading researchers and nurturing a skilled talent pool, the Centre aims to

establish strong linkages with the industry and deliver innovative, state-of-the-art solutions.

The Centre has identified six key areas of research: future of manufacturing, aerospace and defence, building and construction, marine and offshore, biomedical and food, and electronics. Examples of ongoing research range from 3D printing of lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to healthy puree food targeted at elderly patients who experience difficulty in chewing and swallowing solid food.

The next SSG 3D Printing for Rapid Product Development course will be held on 12-17 January 2018. Participants will learn about 3D Printing techniques, applications, case studies and trends. It includes a 1-day workshop where one will get to observe and understand 12 different 3D Printing systems (printing cells, chocolate, circuits, copper and concrete). This course is supported by SkillsFuture.

More information on this course can be found online at http://sc3dp.ntu.edu.sg or by email to [email protected].

SPRING Mr Poon Hong Yuen and the Business Advisors at the

appreciation dinner.

The Chief Executive of SPRING, Mr Poon Hong Yuen addressed the attendees who included representatives from the Chinese and Malay Chambers, Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and Singapore Manufacturing Federation.

Mr Poon introduced the eleven group-based upgrading solutions, which are currently being worked by the various SME centres.

The group-based upgrading solutions are projects that SME Centres pursue in addressing sectoral issues or problems faced in a locality by Small and Medium Enterprises in Singapore.

In sharing examples of these projects, the partners from various agencies presented their solutions to the floor, providing SPRING the opportunity to showcase the achievements from each of the SME centres.

Ms Kritika Rajwani, a business advisor from the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI) SME Centre was proudly featured for her innovative project: “Just Place and Press! - Improving the measurement process of the Manufacturing industry!”

Just Place and Press! aims to modernize the laborious job function of component measurement in the Manufacturing sector in Singapore.

Ms. Kritika Rajwani explaining her project at the SME Centre Appreciation Day on

19th October 2017.

(An article on the solution was featured in SICCI Connect September 2017 issue)

Having met with a handful of component manufacturers and conducting productivity diagnosis, Kritika noted that there was a potential to automate their internal measurement processes and workflow management issues that are unique to these manufacturing factories.

This initiative is seen as a significant advancement within the Component Manufacturing field. With a strong focus on automation being the key, this project is set to garner interest from the businesses in the Manufacturing Industry that are looking to embrace change and be ready for the next generation.

SMEs face enough challenges these days without making their busy lives unnecessarily harder. Working with other SMEs – in Singapore and elsewhere in the world – can go a long way to making your business journey easier. Too many SMEs struggle to grow because they try to do so much on their own, especially in the early years. Few take advantage of the benefits that

can be gained by collaborating with other small business owners. Working in cooperation with other SMEs can help you grow your business faster and further, at lower cost and with less risk.

Can you imagine needing to raise money for your business, but then finding out that you don’t need as much as you originally thought? What about needing three extra staff, then realizing there may be a way to grow with just one, saving you a lot of money?

Collaboration can make these things happen…and so much more. Being a SICCI member and part of the Indian diaspora, you have a unique and fantastic opportunity for collaboration right on your doorstep. Indian entrepreneurs are some of the best networkers in the world and, in our experience, are always ready and flexible to take advantage of an opportunity, no matter where or what it is.

Why Collaborate? Because you cannot do everything yourselfSICCI Associate Corporate Member ‘bizzi’ shares on how SMEs can work together for mutual benefit.

So how do you get started with collaboration?

One of the best pieces of advice we give to SMEs we talk to is to trust in your business’s expertise. Your expertise is what your customers love you for. Do not deviate from this unless you have the time, the funds and the market to expand your offering. Once you have clearly defined your expertise, the aim of collaboration is to look for complimentary businesses that can actually support your growth.

Collaboration is also great for sharing ideas, knowledge exchange and feedback. And, since everyone needs something for their business, you can also use this approach to source products and services from other SMEs, and have them source from you.

Don’t be afraid to look for collaborations in overseas markets. It is a quick and low-cost way to explore and enable overseas expansion with less risk. If trust is an issue, start with the business owners you know well. They will be able to recommend contacts they trust, providing reliable organic growth for your collaboration.

You have so much opportunity to expand through collaboration with SICCI’s members! Get in touch with them, as well as with all of those business owners you know in India itself. Share with

A little time and thought spent on collaboration will give your business the potential to grow beyond what you thought possible. And you won’t have to do it alone.
