What is Relay For Life? The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much- needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.
Philosophy – Why We Relay The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
Why Relay?Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a life-changing experience. At Relay, every person in the community has a chance to celebrate, remember, and fight back. And every person who participates joins others around the globe as part of this worldwide movement to end cancer.
Everyone’s reason to Relay is as unique as their own personal story. At Relay, you can find healing, comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the disease. You have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passionate about finding an end to cancer in our lifetime. You can thank all the people who have done so much to support you through your personal cancer experience. And you can gather together with friends, family, and colleagues to laugh, cry, and create lasting memories.
No matter why you take part in Relay, however, one thing is clear: with every step you take, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or claim another year of anyone’s life.

Gordy’s Vision
Dr. Klatt had a purpose when he began the 24-hour Relay in 1985. The significance of daytime and nighttime coincides with the journey that all cancer patients go through.
Clear your mind and picture...
It’s daylight. Life is wonderful. You’re healthy, happy and looking forward to the future. You’re looking forward to your child’s dance recital or taking your child to Disney World for a vacation. You’re looking forward to the new house you just bought. You have a new dream that you’re thrilled about.
But then, ...darkness falls.
You hear those words, “You’ve got cancer.”, or worse, your child has cancer. Your life has suddenly become very dark. You don’t know what the outcome will be. You feel there is no hope in sight. You start your treatments. You’re nauseous and you have no hair. You’re exhausted from caring for your child and from the agony of knowing there’s nothing you can do to make him healthy again. You couldn’t possibly feel any worse.
Until...
The sun starts to rise. The tumor is shrinking. Your treatments are working. You’re getting your appetite back. Your child feels well enough to go out and play for just a few minutes. There is hope.
It is now daylight and you’re in remission. You have your life back. You’ve made it through the night and the darkness. You celebrate life in the daylight knowing that the darkness of nighttime is behind you.
That is why we Relay. That is why Relay is an overnight event.
How Your Relay Dollars Work in the FightAgainst Cancer
As of March 2008, the Society was funding more than $16.5 million in grants in the MidSouth Division. Nationally, American Cancer Society grantees have won 42 Nobel Prizes while spending over $3 billion since 1946. The American Cancer Society spends about $130 million annually on cancer research. As everyone knows, fighting this disease and working for scientific discovery is hard work, takes time, and of course can be costly. The following is a brief rundown on how your money is helping to save lives through research and programs that ACS offers.
$60 Buys one case of latex gloves
$100 Provide 10 patient information services
$120 Buys one case of 144 Petri dishes
$150 Buys one case of 500 test tubes
$250 Buys wigs for 3 cancer patients or buys 83 hours of toll-free access to the National Call Information Center
$300 Provides transportation for one patient for 30 treatments
$500 Buys Reach to Recovery visits for 5 women
$800 Cost of “Look Good...Feel Better” consultations for 4 women
$1,000 Expenses for one patient for one day at Hope Lodge
$2,000 Cost of new microscope
$3,000 Expenses for 1 patient in an ACS funded clinical trial
$5,000 Provides support group programs for 100 patients or buys a one year supply of radioactive compounds to use in developing a new diagnostic test for prostate cancer
$8,000 Buys an ultraviolet light source microscope and camera for identification of reactions of cell proteins by antibodies tagged with fluorescent dyes in a new diagnostic procedure for cervical cancer
$10,000 One month’s funding of the average American Cancer Society Research Grant or can purchase an apparatus to slice very thin sections from tumor tissues to study the gene amplication in breast cancer or hormone failure in prostate cancer
As you can see, your hard work is needed if we are to reach our goal of finding cures for all cancers. Thank you for all you do in the fight against cancer!
Remember, every dollar counts! You are making a difference!
